Yesterday morning Dr. Patterson, the coro- her, held an inquest at the Washington arsenal on the bodies of the two soldlers—Privates Michael Joyce and John A. Mason and Privates iddle, Keefe and Strecks testified as to the gun being moved preparatory to cleaning, and when the Trail was dropped and the explosion of the cartridge took place and the deceased fell, they being directly in front of the barrels. Sergeant Moore testified that after the gun Was turned over to himon Friday he had the Man in charge of the crank turn it round sev- eral times to see If all the shots were fired off, end heard the click of the gun, and re from this that there was nothing in it. Wher n= ever there was a cartridge caught in the he moved the crank himself. He was under the impression that the gun was empty when they left It, and that some children or other person had put a cartridge in picked up from the ground, and which escaped notice. The cover was put on the gun before they went to dinner and a person Could not put a cartridge in without removing the cover. He saw that the gun was secure after the firing ceased. Dr. J. W. Joyce, a brother of one of the victims, makes a statement Dlamtog Sergeant Moore for the presence of the cuarge in the gun. He also says: “The charge that my poor unfortunate brother-and his youug comrade were responsible for their own deaths isone I take particular exception to. Any man having the slightest knowledge of artillery practice knows that a fat'gue party who are®| sent to clean a gun are not ‘ om’ by number, nor have they any position assigned them at the piece; and even lf they had, Joyce and Berry were occupying the posttions that No. 1 and No. 2 should occupy when moving an unloaded gun.” THE FUNERAL took place this morning from the quarters of the battery at the Arsenal, and there was a large assemblage present, embracing many of the friends and acquaintances of the deceased and families a residing within the Arsenal grounds.
