THE EVEN TAR. WASHINGTON. SATURDAY......September 1S, 1880. “ CROSBY 8, NOYES....Editor. =————————__——— The Evening Star has@ reguiar, perma- ment. bona fide datly circulation more than double that of any other daily paper gublished in Washington, and eq ual to tha of all the other daily papers here added to- gether. “Tae Stan office is connected with the Telephone Exchange. Advertisements, orders for the paper by mail and otherwise, news, or any information or business can be sent day or night, free of charge. No Compromise in Virginia, ‘The attempt to reconcile the differences in the democracy of Virginia, and unite ths two factionS in support of one ticket, has, after three days labor on the part of leaders of the factions, resulted in a fallure that is no doubt final. The breach created between the funders and readjusters by the state canvass last year 15 too wide to be bridged over, even with the certainty of carrying the state for Hancock as aninducement. The regular (or funder) com- mitiee insisted that in the proposed primary election none but qualified voters, who are national democrats, should be permitted to vote; the readjuster committee adhered to their original proposition that all registered voters (which Includes those who have not paid the capitation tax) should be allowed to take part In the primary, provided they should pledge thetr support toHancock and English. Upon this point the two committees disagreed, and the attempt at reconciliation, or unity, fallel. The read- justers would not be put in the position of “abandoning faithful allies"—which means they will not consent to anything calculated to reduce their influenc? with the colored voters. Both committees adjourned yesterday and will now appeal to the people at the ballot-box. The utterances of the two committees in their respective communications during the confer- ence, outline the policy that each will pursue in its appeal to the people. The funders will take the position that, having complied with party usage by sending a delegation to the Cincinnati convention, they hold the posttion of regular- ity, and therefore are entitled to the support of all national democrats. They will arraign the readjusters for alleged coquetting with the “negro republican vote,” and charge that the Mahone electoral ticket cannot be trusted to vote for Hancock, even ff elected. The readjusters will maintain that they rep- resent the majority of white voters as shown io the last state election, and that the funders are !n the Meld with the secret purpose of giving the state to Garfleld, tn order to defeat their old enemies, the readjusters. The canvass will be lively and charges and counter-charges of the gravest character wil] be uttered. The readjusters will labor under the disadvantage of having two distinct and opposite elements to hold. In the eastern part of the state the consideration they ae so particular to show for the colored voter Will add to their strength, but this very course Will burt them in the western portion of Vir- ginta, where nearly all the readjusters are white men. The whites in tnat part of the state are jealous of anything that tends to mmerease the power of the negro, and it ts not improbable that they will desert the readjuster party rather than by their votes give counte- mance to the charge that they are in affiliation With colored voters. It is evident now that the readjusters are counting upor the colored vote to give them victory {n the state. The position they have taken that tt ts the part of wisdom In politics to win over all the recruits and converts possible is a strong one, and cannot be weakened, except by appeal- ing to the prejudices of the whites, acd this the funders will certainly do. The policy of the readjusters to seek recruits from the colored voters also lessens the chances of carrying the state for Garfleld. It 1s plain that Mahone and bis leutenants tntend to devote their best energies to recruiting the colored vote, and, having dealt fairly by this class in the past, they wiil make inroads upon the re- publican ranks. Thus, tt looks as if the state is pretty well assured to Hancock, notwith- Standing the continuance of the democratic fight. a The October Elections. The next state election will be held In Colo- jado on Tuesday, October 5th. In October, 1376, im the election for governor, Routt (rep.) re- ceived 14,154 votes, Hughes (lem.) 13,316. Ia 1Si5, the last state election, Pitkin (rep.) got 14.396 votes, Loveland (dem.) 11,575, and Buck- ingham (greenbacker) 2,751 This year there Is no greenback ticket in the field, and the demo- crats claim that they will get the bulk of that vote. This claim is sustained by the figures of the election of 1575, when the democratic vote fell off 1,743, a8 compared with 1876, while the Sreenbackers polled 2784 votes In 1875 the republicans gained 242 votes over the previous election. The democrats this year are making an active can- vass In Colorado, but they are not as weil Organized as the republicans, nor are they al- together harmonious as to state issues. There fore, the chances are that the republicans will maintain their hold upon the state by a ma- Jority that will makeit certain for Garfield in November. Georgia will elect state officers on Wednesday, October 6, and as the republicans have no ticket, the result can have no political significance. There are two democratic cand! dates for governor, Colquitt and Norwood, and the friends of each are maklag a bitter fight. Both factions support Hancock, who will re- celve the usual large democratic majority in November. State elections will be held in In- diana, Ohio and West Virginia, on Tuesday October 12. Inthe two first named states all attention Is centered, as the result will have an important, if not a decided, influence upon the presidential election. Both parties claim Indi- ana, which has since 1st) voted regalarly for the democrats. This would seem to indicate that the chances of victory are with the demo- crats, The republicans count with contidence upon Ohio. In Indiana and West Virginia the legislatures to be chosen on the 12th of October will each elect a U.S. Senator to succeed Messrs. McDonald and Hereford (democrats), whose rms expire on the 4th of next March. West Virginia will, no doubt, cast her usual demo- cratie majority. The attempts to bring about a fusion between the republicans and greonback- ers Io the state have not met with much suc- cess, and will, probably, result in reducing the vote of both those opposition parties Tie Telephone ly the name of anew weekly (Saturday) paper issued by Messrs.
