THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON. WEDNESDAY....September 15, 1850. CROSBY & NOYES.... Editor. ———— The Evening Star has @ regular, perma- ment. bona fide daily circulation more than double that of any other daily paper mublished in Washington, and eq ual to tha of all the other daily payers here added to- gether. _————————————— THE BTAx office is connected with the Telephone Exchange. Advertisements, orders for the paper by mail and otherwise, news, or any information or business can be sent day or night, free of charge. Republican Fighting Chances iu the South. In the event that Indiana goes democratic In October, ft {5 sald the republfcan campatrn managers will endeavor to capture two or three southern states to make up for the fifteen €lectoral votes of the Hoosler state. Should the canvass take this turn, the republicans would probably select Florida, Sout’ Carolina and North Carolina as the states of the south in which to makeafight. These three states have twenty electoral votes, and the demo- cratic majorities in them are smaller than ta any of others tn the south. Therefore that the republicans would elect test in them, In Florié. tn 1876 the returning board gave Hayes a majority bat ate supreme court, by 103 de- cision that al] the returns should be counted, ajority. Inthe election for the first district gave a nd distrt at the result in the second alstrict was obtained by unfair and a contest fs pending in the presentatives over it. However, to 5 ns, they show a democ jority of only 2,776 im the state, whic voting population of about 5. last four years numbers of nor settied In Florida, and it {3 claimed that a ma- jority of th North Carolina gave a demoeratle majority In 1376 of 17,01 of a total vote of 233,541. ‘The democratic vote fell of In 173, bat it was owing, toa considerable extent, to over confl- dence. The republicans of the state are naking aspirited canvass this year, and have a good ticket in the Heid, but even with all the atd the national committee may give them tt 15 not that the democratle majority caa be arolina polled a total vo and gave Hayes a majority of the returns. The democratic counting, of 182,776 in ‘964 on the fas State ticket ran ahead of the electoral tlekxet and was elected. In the Congressional election of 1575 the dem rats polled a total of 34 votes, to + i for the republicans, but the latter were com- pletely disorganized and, a3 1s well known, made but a poor Mzht. The of the control of the state had disheartened them, and many of their ablest leaders lett t ate for good and removed to thenorth. This year the repub- licans have organized for the national contest only, They put no state ticket fn th Id, b2- Meving they could bring out the party strength better by fgnoring state {ssues. Should the national republican committee determine to enter upon the canvass in South Carolina and aid the state organtzation with speakers and money, they might be able to bring to the polls the entire vote of the party. Such a course of action would, naturally, put the democrats on their mettle, and they would do their Very best. It would heal the dissenstons that have grown up in the democracy ln the face of a disorganized and weak opposi- tion, but considering the vote of 1876 there Is no room to say the republicans could not carry South Carolina. It must be remembered, how- hat in the last presidential canvass the S had all the power and patronage of ‘state, county and municipal offices, and all the eteeticn machinery on thelr side, while now the democrats occupy that vantage ground. ‘The chances are that thedemocrats will get the Seven electoral votes of South Carollaa tn Spite or all the efforts the republicans may put forth. In Georgia and Tennessee the dem- Ocrats are divided into two factions, but both win: h @ach state, support the same elec- toral ticket, and therefore, in the face of 79,642 democratic majority in Georgia In 1876 and 43,600 majority for that party tn Tennessee, ‘the same year there Is nothing for republicans to build a Lope upon as far as those states are concerned. There is one more southera state in which the republicans might make a good fight—Virginia) ~The democratic majority in 1876 was 4 but since then the party has been riven In twaln, and now, within six weeks Of the election, the two factions are confronting each other in the fel As a matter of course the republican policy with regard to Virginia Will depend entirely upon the action of the demecratic factions If the latter untte upon one elecioral Ueket, It would be a waste of time to attempt to defeat it; if the fight of factions continues, then the repub- Means may step ia and win. A poll tax Of one doliar per head ts now exacted in Vir- ginia as a voting quailfication, and it can be paid up to the very day of election. Ir all efforts to unite the democrats fail it 1s reason- able to suppose the republican national com- malttee will see to It that the voters of its party Pay this capitation tax and deposit their Votes. In 1si6 the total democratic vote w: 13 and the total republican vote 4 ‘The readjusters are claiming the support of a large nvm er of the colored voters, but should the repubileans engage ir an active canvass they will so conduct it as to arouse the party enthusi of this class, and bring them in line for Gartleid and Arthur. pD®* oops, CARPETINGS, &C. The outcome of the jolnt meeting of the fander and readjuster state committees and electors of Virginia, in Richmond to-day, wil protably bea call for a state convention to consist of delegates representing all voters who Support Hancock and English. The indications point to this result. The most violent oppo- Benis of Compromise In both factions appear to be willing to abide by the decision of a state convention assembled upon a ca!l relating to ational issues only, leaving the state debt question to be fought out next year.
