The September States. ‘The states bolding elections tn September are Arkansas on the 6th, Vermont on the 7th, and Maine on the 13th In Arkansas there fs searcely any political issue invoived, as the Fepubilcans are making no contest. In the September election in Arkansas four years ago the democrats carried the state by 34,00) ma- jority, and tn the presidential election In No- vember by 20,000. The only issue that will be contested In this election will be that of the question of repudiation, which appearstn the form of a proposed amendment to the constitu- Uon forbidding the payment of the state fanded debt. Some of the foremost men tn Arkansas are making a decided stand against the repn- lation disgrace, and confidence 1s expressed that the project wil be defeatea. Vermont is as one-sidedly republican as Arkansas is democratic, and consequently the democrats have no expectation of carrying the state, but they are making an animated fight to reduce the republican majority, doubiless for effect upon the otuer states. At the September election in Vermont in 1s76 the republican ma- Jority was 23,660, and in the November follow- ing was The great interest is centered upon the Maine election in consequence of the sharpness of the contest there, and the importance of the stake Since the republican revolution of 1856, when Hannibal iamlin abjared democracy, and was elected governar by the republicans by 17,881 majority over the combined vote of the democrats and Bell Everett men, Matne has been republican until 1575, when the greenback Vote of 41,404 with the democratic vote of @svz2 gave a majority against the republicans of 7,243 and elected both branches Of the legisiature and two of the tlve m2mber3 of Congress. In 1879 the greenback-democratic combination had 492 mafority over the repubil- cans, but the latter carried both branches of the legislature and elected the governor de- spite what is pretty justly styled the attempt Of the fustonists to “steal the state.” In Maine, it must be remembered, it requires a majority’ Of all the votes cast to elect a state ticket. Thus in 187s Governor Connor had 15. plu- rality over his highest competitor, but he was beaten under the majority law by 7,243 In 1579 Goyernor Davis recelved Be plurality over his highest competitor, but he was defeated Dy about 1,000 majority and had to be chosen by the legislature. Amend- ments to the constitution of the state are now pending for adoption or rejection by the people Substituting the usual system of electing by plurality. It fs also proposed to postpone state elections hereafter to November. The repubdil- lican majorities in presidential years since the party came in power in Maine, have been as September, 1886, 17,381, November. ot 136), ie November, November, September, 1372, 17,206, November, 1s: September, 1576, 15,459, November, 157 5 Since 1sié, the republican majorities have been whittled down to nothing, and thongh the Probability is that the republicans will carry the state both in September and November, ‘they will doubtless be very well content if they get balf the majority of the last presidential year. ‘The Irving hall democracy of New York city have Invited the Tammanyites to a conference With the view of establishing peaceful relations for the present campaign. This action on the Part of the anti-Tammany faction 13 significant Of areal purpose to harmonize differences, and Senator Conkling’s prediction of a united Gemocracy in New York bids fair to be speedily Verified. The weight of censure from the party at large because of the continued division in that state had begun to fall upon the anti- Tammany faction and now it would seem th> Yeaders of that faction are endeavoring to re- pair past errors. They do not care to be charged ‘with the loss of New York to the party, tn the event that should coma The supposition that a war of factions will occur in the coming state convention 1s not well founded. ‘Taere is not lkely to be any trouble or contest over the admission of Tam- Many delegates. The call for the convention precludes that as it invites all who propose to support Handock and English to join in choos. Ingdelegates. Under this broad call Tammany ‘Will send its delegates and, as it’s request for Tepresentation in the new state committee is modest, that will be granted. Itonly asks for proportionate representation from New York city. The present state committee will, o doubt be reappointed with the exception of ‘Several members from the city, who will be given. to Tammany, Persons who give any atten- ton to making calculations of the result of the coming presidential election may as well count upon a united democracy in New York. The evidences at present all point plainly to this end. ‘The democrats of Kansas have nominated Miss Sarah A. Brown for state superintendent of public Instruction. This is a ng departure in politics, especially for the democrats who have not, heretofore, favored “woman's rights.” Miss Brown is at present superintendent of Schools for Douglass county, and is credited With having accomplished a great deal more in that position than any of her male predeces- Sore. The democratic leaders in Kansas express the opinion that Miss Brown's nomination wil Strengthen their state tleket by drawing Votes from the opposition. If this prediction Shail prove correct, it will have theeffect of popularizing the nomination of women for of- fice by parties seeking to overcome an opposi- ton majority. It would appear that the demo. Crats propose to enlist the fair sex in their cause as much as possible in this campaign. In A recent interview witk a delegation of women Sutragists, Gen. Hancock assured them that if elected President ne would not veto any bills of Congress looking to the enfranchisement of Women. Miss Brown, the Kansas nominee, is described by a@ prominent democrat as “mighty brainy,” and it is a fact that none will dispute, that there Is plenty of room in political Parties for or additional brains. AD investigation of the present condition and Prospects Of trade made by the N. Y. Tribune shows a very encouraging state of affairs. The heavy trade that set in last fall has continued to the present time with little interruption, and there 1s a general feeling among merchants that this season It will be greatly augmented. ‘The southern trade is the best for years. The Crops, both in the West and the South, are abundant; but while the improvement Is gen- eral throughout the whole country, the greatest increase bas taken place in the southern states. The cotton crop is reported unusually large, especially in Texas. The rice, sugar, and other crops are also large. The manufacturing in- dustries of the country have advanced matert- ally during the year, including the cotton fac- tories in the southern states. Altogether, the merchants of New York eel aa ey ety and hopeful frame of ming. ————__-~es-______ ‘The bluff game of offering to bet against dds on the election of Hancock or Garfield, or majorities in pivotal states, has been commenced ‘upon both sides, but is not likely to make much Impression. It is pretty well understood that the thing 1s done for effect, and that neither ‘Side can have any data at this stage of the can- Vass to fustify this confidence. Possibly the September elections may give sufficient indtca- ions of the popular drift to foreshadow the Fesult of the presidential bat ‘Aukely It will need the geeGprennls repels able “straws,” The results in In- pape ‘Obio, especially if the majortties for either side should be of any ‘Size, will tell the . — JOH Bits Soweved bet anon from 48 to 482 Lat., Let. 435 and 6% at. 8.w.
