Brown, the well-known sexton of Grace church, died at 5 o'clock on Saturday afternoon, at’ Bradford, Conn., where he was visiting, from a severe attack Of Dilious fever. Mr. Brown had been in poor health during the spring, and on the 12th of July lett New York for Bradford, In company with his wite. He Was 74 years of age. Ills body will be brought to this city at noon to-day. Mr. Brown was proprietor of a feed store at lth street and 4th avenue, and itn his office as sexton he turned his feed store to ac- count Ina curloas manner. URIEL Gkaves has resigned the pastor- ate or St. John’s English Evangelical Independ- ent Lutheran church, corner of Monument Street and Broadway, and he preached yester- day twice at Standard hall, Baltimore and Pred- erick streets. He had intended going to Washington to speak at a temperance meeting in the afternoon, but post- poned if when the audience at the hall in the morning expressed a wish for him to preach at night. Services were aiso held in the Broadway and Monument streets, by Rev A 8. Seltz. The counct! of the church has accepted the resignation of Mr. Graves aud the congrega~ tion Whi act on it Wednesday night at the church. Objection was made first by some of the members to thelr pastor's taking the part he dia in political and other questions, where- upon be resigned. He has been a very active temperance speaker, and has also advocated the greenback political views, making speeches at a bumber of meetings of that party. A Brave Doctor's Wirk.—The killing of Bul Rodifer, a notorious burglar, after breaking 1nto the residence of Dr. L. C. Walker, at Indian- apoliy has been briefly related by telegraph, but so much bravery was displayed by the doc- tor’s wife that furtier particulars will prove in- teresting. The doctor was awakened by his Wife. who had become worried by the gaslight in the ball being very low. He got up and turned It up higher, but she was suspicious that fome one had turned tt down, and, woman like, she looked under the bed, detecting the feet of a wan protruding from beneath. She knew that if she told her husband there would be a deadly struggle, and she quietly got up and went out of the room. She roused her son, went down Stairs, got a pistol and placed It in’ his hands. She then woke the colored servant man, who also hada pistol. About this Ume the doctor, wondering at the movements of his wife, also discovered the Whereabouts of the burglar, im- mediately struck him in the face and grappled with him. ‘The burglar fired his pistol, the ball grazing the doctor's side, and, releasing him- self, Hed from the room, with tte pistol in one hand and a knife in the other. The son, posted in the entry, and suspecting that. the shot tired had killed or wounded his father, fired two shots at the retreating burglars. Though one of the balls pierced his heart, he continued to rub, only talling dead when he reached the porch.
