Editor. ——— ES Bite The Evening Star has@ regular, perma- ment. bona fide daily circulation more than double that of @ny other daily paper published in Washington, and eq ual to tha of all the other daily papers here added to- gether. (a Te ST4n office is connected with the Telephone Exchange. Advertisements, orders for the paper by mail aud otherwise, news, or any information or business can be sent day or mit, froa of charge. Persons leaving town for the season, and Sum- mer travelers, can have THE STAs mailed to them, Postpsié, for fifty cents per month, the address being chaned ss often as desired. The money must accompany the order in all cases. Stil Wranglin The two factions of the democratic party In New York city do not appear to be making any Frogress In the way of approaching other upon a harmonious basis. The neglect of the Teguiar state committee to call a convention was the source of the present dif Tammany’s call has, perhaps, compli ters rather than simplified them. efforts to unite the Tammany and anti-Tam. many factions tail, the effect will weaken the democratic electoral ticket. The control of the city of New York and its immense local patron- age Is the alm of each faction, and the foul of both will trade off thetr votes for Presid for support for local candidates. A continued division means, of course, that there will be Tammany and anti-Tammouy local tekets in the feld, and the bitter rivairy between the two Will render local suecess to each of greater im- port an @ DAtional vietory. Any trading Of votes in the city might cause the defeat of Hancock In the te, and thus tose the presi to the democracy. The regular committee, or rather the leading members of It, decline to utter any deiatte 4x- pressions as to what will ne done, but, a3 yet, there does not seem to be any warrant for th? veport that they have decided not to calla con- Tention. A meeting has been called for Sept ber Ist, When the convention question will be determined and that determination will either precipitate or avold the crisis. If the commit- tee decides that it has the power to nominate a candidate for chief judge of the court of ap- peals, then the trouble that Tammany has given the party will be a sma!! affair, compared sensions that will follow. The ex- democratic papers and leaders ghout the state indicate that the party would revolt a assumption of power ou ti unitte the committee wouldwetain ¢ ig and the breach in the democracy would be Sreater than at present. There may be wisdom enough in the party mana 1 this trouble, but !t 1s very evic aation in New York, as ft stands, seriously threatens the national democratic ucket Abont Cotton. ‘The suggestion is made that a cotton exitbi- tion be heid at some not distant date, to stimu late the production of that staple. Mr. Edward Atkinson estimates that the present acreage of cotton covers an two per Cent. of the eollon-growing area of the United States, and that to encourage an extension of its cultiva- Uon fs to add immensely to the wealth of the country. The cultivation of cotton ts much more profitable, at present, with free labor than before the war with slave labor. That has been demonsirated by the returns of each crop of the last few years. This ts easfly explained. New the planter gets a good price for his cotton seed, which was either given away or scattered carelessly over his land, before the War, that !t might rot and thereby enrich the soil. The manufacture of cotton- se€d oil has become a large industry tn the last few years. Estimating the cotton crop of the Present year at 6,000,000 bales, it will produce 0 tons of cotton seed which, besides fent for planting next year, will vm1,000 tons of 500,000 tons of hulls, which are Utilized for making paper. This of] commands & ready sale in ail markets, and the ofl-cake is used for feeding stock and for fertilizing. Thus it Is seen that what was waste before the War ts now uttliz by new processes ard machinery, returns a profit to the planter. Cotton-seed mills have been established ali over the south, and the Planter bas but to haul the seed which he form- erly virtually threw away a few miles to get cash for ft. After the oil is extracted the meal that ts left still contains the nourishment best sulted for stock, and the planter purchases it for a small proportion of the price he got for the seed. This accounts matnly for the greater Profit now derived trom raising eetton, though the new system of labor, with the laborer him- self directly interested in the crop, ts naturally an incentive to him to do his very best in the way of cultivatt The ultra temperance men in Maine have Organized and taker the political field under the name of “The enforced prohibition party. * After sharp discussion in the State Temperance Society bet those who belleved that the temperance cause could best be promoted by affiliation with the republican party, and those Who insisted upon separate political action, the latter prevailed, and afterward held a conven- tion (admission by ti and nominated a car- didate for governor and one for Congress in the first district. In nominating a cand!date for governor the prohibitionists manifested a desire to beat Gov. Davis, the republican candi- date, who they charge with falling to enforce the liquor laws. A seat in the U.S, Senate 1s at stake, and after the bribery expo- sures tn connection with the last legislature It is quite probable that good citizens will vote for the pest men, regardless of the ticket they are on. ———----__ If one-half that ts told of the treatment re- ‘elved by the Knights Templar in Chicago be true then it be a long tme before that city will be again selected as the place of meet- ing for any convenuon or organization.
