SSS SSS rr THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON. WEDNESDAY........August 15, 1SS0. CHO*BY &. NOYES....Editor. ————————— Zhe Evening Star hasa regular. perma- ment. bona fide daily circulation more than double that of any other daily paper published in Washington, and equal totha Of all the other daily payers here added to- octher. ———_——————————— THE Stax has a direct wire from its news room to She Western Union Telesraph office in New York eity, from which wires radiate to all parts of the Blobe, and is therefore enabled to secure the lateat ews by its own operstor from every quarter mp to ‘Within s few moments of going to press. It ia the only eveniny paper south of Philsdelphia which re Ceives exclusively the Associated Press dispatches. Persons leaving town for the season, and Sum- mer travelers, can have THE Stan mailed to them, Postpaid, for fifty cents per month, the address being changed as often as desired. The money must accompany the order in all cases. = Tammany and the Tildenites Still Bickering. ‘The action of the Tammany state committee of New York in calling a state convention has put a new phase upon the canyass In tha Ii demonstrates that the so-cafled reconci between rival factions at Cincinnatt was but a ary ebullition of enthu It did very long. Earnest efforts to units nd anti-Tammany for this campalgo ow the breech 13 widened ra state convention. Tam- d more honesty {n its endea’ Tammany have failed, more by the ‘to produce harmony than the regular or Fanlk- Ber commit and the effect has been to In- crease the Iriends and followersof the form throughout the state. One of the most promi- nent 4 ts of the country, who 13 con- nected with both the national aad congre Sional committees, and who has spent the last few weeks principally In New York, sald yester- Gay fn tts ¢ “The conduct of the Faulkner committee led many democrats to conclude that it does not want harmony. That com- muittee ts composed mainly of smatl-minded men, who had rather vent their spleen agatost Tammany than help to a national victory, They have snubbed the Tammany men when the latter were honestly trying to heal up the differences. The result ts that Tammany ha3 thousands of sympathizers over the state who were recently its enemies, and {ts call for a State convention will be generally responded to.” The “pressions of the democratic papers of New York state indicate that there ts h truth tn the opinion here quoted. The demand for a state convention is almost unanimous, as far as the democratic concerned, and sharp criticisms upon the Faulkner committee begin to appear even In papers that supported Governor Rob! Continued division In the democratic party of New York means the certain success of the Fepublican presidential ticket, and therefore the Situation in that state naturally excites a great deal of interest. The plan of the democrats Low seems to be to persuade the Faulkner committee to call a convention to meet at t fame place and date with the Tammany con- Sentior, and then to merge the two into one body. In the frst place, the Faulkner commit- tee may not consent to this plan. It has shown @ very positive will of its own, heretofore, in Gealing with party affairs. Besides, the mem- bers of the committee know that they retire themselves by calling a convention, as one of the duties of the latter body would be to organ- ize a new state committee. But even should the regular convention be called, it may prove Yery difficult to bring !t and the Tammanyites together Into one harmontous body. Should the movement be successfully made, 1t will, un- goubtedly, improve the democratic chances of Success, 2s & harmonious partyin New York Would encourage the democrats in the other Blates. —_——_—--—___ ‘The managers of the democratic canvass are trying the experiment of Introducing southera Speakers to northern audiences. In Vermont, Where a vigorous canvass is being waged, not- Withstanding the certain republican majority hat will follow, two ex-confederate generals are stumping forthe democrats. They draw Jarger audiences than the northern speakers, Because, no doubt, of the curiosity to see and hear them, and {t is sald that the temper of their remarks 1s very conservative. Tne re- publicans might offset this movement by send- ing distinguished speakers into the southern States. Such men as Conkling and Blaine Would draw Immense crowds in that section, because of their fame as distinguished leaders, and in that way republican arguments could Teach thousands who would not turn out to hear men less famous. Would-be wags are amusing themselves and boring the community considerably of late, by burdening the telegraph wires with their “jokes.” Reebntly the New York Ti imposed upon bya telegraphic accow bulldozing affair in Vermont which never took Place. Yesterday a dispatch, stating that Hon. Proctor Knott, member of Congress from Ken- tucky, had been mortally wounded tn a difti- culty was published. This report was Contradicted in the afternoon of yesterday, as there was no foundation for it whatever. The Vermont genius who sent the false account of demccratic bulldozers, turns out to be a young democratic “journalist,” as he writes himself. The authorities are searching for Some law under which they can punish him, and If they succeed the example may put a stop to such “jokes.” ‘The reported killing of Proctor Knott having brought his name before the public, there is Some comment as to his fallure 2s a humorist. In the Fortieth Congress—his first term—he Gelivered the famous “Duluth speech,” which Was full of humor. Since then the Congressional Record contains nothing funny from the same source, and the conclusion of some is that the Duluth speech was not original he truth is that Knott was surprised at the attention that Speech attracted, and he was mortified, too, to Tind himself classified, ia general estimation, as simply a “funny man.” He did not aspire to any such distinction, and since that time he has eschewed wit and fun fn all his remarks in Congress. ——~<+e-—___ In the opinion of the New York Hvra’d there Never was a more ridiculous chtmera than that Put up to the effect that the desperate and un- Scrupulous South has embarked In a conspiracy to magnify the population of that section with @ view to increase Its relative weight in Con- gress. The Herald argues that tn the census of ‘the present year and every subsequent census the North will receive the full advantage of the Prodigious increase of its numbers; and that after the apportionment under the new census the South will become so impressed with a Sense of Its decaying power that it will percetve the folly of maintaining any distinctive south- ern politics. —<re-___ The lady suffragists who interviewed Gen. Hancock the other day evidently thought they had done a good stroke of bustness in the way Of advancing their cause, but their leader, Miss Susan B. Anthony, does not agree with them. She is unalterably opposed to states’ rights and Zhe democratic party, and will enter into no ‘unholy alliance with them unless the party Pledges itself unequivocally to women’s rights. 4s bolting ts becoming popular in these days of independent thinking, there ts no reason why the ladies should not enjoy the privilege.
