THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON. SATURDAY ...........August 11, L880. CROSBY NOYES....Editor. ————————_—_—_—_——_—— The Evening Star has@ regular, perma- nent. bona fide daily circulation more than double that of any other daily paper sublished in Washington, and equal totha of ail the other daily papers here added to- gether. Taz Stak is connected: with the wiresfof the Na- ‘tonal Telephone Exchange and with the Western advertisements, orders for the paper to be served news, or any !nformation, at any hour of the day free of charwe. These facilities tre szrest conve- nience, and will be spprecisted by the customers of Tue Bras. sl. ‘Persons leaving town for mer travelers, can have Tr 87a mailed to them, peetpaid, for fifty cents per month, the address being chanved as often a8 desired. The money must eccompsny the order in all cases. Democratic Dissensions in New Vork. The democratic brethren of New York are not yet dwelling together in entire political unity by any means. The bone of contention now 13 with regard to calling a state convention. rammany. backed by a very large proportion of the regular party, insists that a convention shall te called for the nomination of a candi- Gate for chief justice of the court of appeals. The state committee are dodging the tssue. They do not want a convention, and though raid to cpenly advocate the naming of a can- 1 by the committee, that Is what they are ctetly scheming to bring about. This com- mittee was appointed by the convention which assembled to select delegates to Cincionatt. Tilden ruled that body absolutely. It was expected that he would be the demo- cratic neminee for President, and that added to his power in the party. Now that occupies that position the chief > of the y fs transferred to him, F state convention be called to nom_ e acandidate for chief justice, 1t will prob. y reorganize the committee. Tilden men will, to a considerable extent, be required to step to the rear, and others in full accord and armonby with the new spirit and purposes of ty will be Called to the front. The ‘aulkner committee realize this and hence thetr }yjection to a convention. Tammany has taken Dold stand on the question, and under the ders, it bids fair Tammany has its state organization in tact yet and declares Its purpose to calla state onvention if the Faulkner committee refuse todoso. Many of the party papers which be- lorg to the regular wing, In fact, nearly all of them, demand a state convention, apd the feeling is such that thousands of the regulars would participate In a Tam- ¥ convention If thetr own committee should arbitrarily refuse to follow party rules. There ts bo precedent for the nomination of a candi- ate by astate committee, except !n cases where astate convention has specially conferred au- thority. That bas not been done tn this case, and therefore the only regular mode of pro- cedure ts to call a convention. Should the regu- lar committee refuse to do this, Tammany, by mbiing a convention, would attain the po- sition af regularity, and that would lead to a greater split In the party, very likely, than has Oecurred heretofore. Should the dispute over calling & convention keep the party divided, it will greatly help the republicans in their con- test, particularly for Congressmen, members of the legislature, and local officers. re —__. The managers of the republican national campeicn are still being urged to send some of the most distinguished leaders of that party into the southern states to make a regular canvass. President Fairchild, of the Berea Col- lege in Kentucky, in a letter to Chairman Jew- ell, of the national committee, asks that Hale, Frye, Hoar, Foster, Mathews, and republicans of that character, be sent into the south. Mr, Fairchild gays tn his letter: “The southern people are not all hardened, hopeless reprobaiea, Argument and Sloquence #re no more Wasted on them than on other pee ple. Many in the democratic party seem to a northern man, morally, religiously and goctal- ly. out of their normal sphere. ‘Seen at the north they would at once be taken for republt- cans. There is where they belong, and thither with proper effort they may beled. But if the polte: 2 is to abandon the solid south to the dem- ceratic party, our prospects as a nation are gloomy. In conclusion, Mr. Pairchtld states that any sble republican may speak his sentiments any- where tn Kentucky freely and without molesta- Ucn, and he believes that to be the truth with regard to the other southern states. The na- Ucnal committee might be surprised at the re- sults of a canvass in the south by the abit acd best leaders of the republican party. —_$_$_§_<o-___ In regard to the surprising increase in popu lation attributed to the southern states by what are said to be advance census returns, some of the southern papers offer an explanation. which, tn view of the attention the subject ts receiving. ts worth repeating. They say that the population of the south was not fairly re Ported in the census of 1870; that the U. S. mar- Shals (who, under the law, were entrusted with the enumeration) were all politiclans of the carpet-bag regime, and they cared only to draw the money for the censyg work; that the work Was slighted, and In many sections the enume- ration was guessed at; that the result was a return of population far below that actually in existence. ——_—_—__~<..__ The best record of ail the trotters that have Won honers on the turf in the past was sur- passed at Rochester, Thursday, by Maud S. and St. Julien. The honors of the Rochester race ly with Maud S. There was no ques- tion asto the time she made. Everybody ad- witted It; but there were those outside the Metal timers who insisted that St. Julten did pot accomplish the feat he was credited with. The ware is truly the queen of the turf, and she is what, In speaking of a man who had achieved great success, we would term self- Mace. That is, the great care so often be. Stowed upon race horses tn breeding did not fall to ber lot. It was not until recently that it was discovered she possessed capacity for such speed, and her time at Chicago recently Surprised even her owner. It fs now cerlously proposed in New York city to organize a fusitng match, to take place In Clarerden ball next month. Five persons have already entercd the lists, and others, no doubt, Wil cere tn before the entries close. ‘The man Who fasts the longest ts to receive a purse of #1,(00, snd for thts sum persons are found who are willirg to risk health and life. The match Will Do d: ubt prove an attraction, and the gate. money will pay the purse and leave profit for the manegers. People seem to enjoy seeing others suffer or run the risk of pbystcal danger. The more suffering and the more danger the greater the attraction. If tt were proposed to test the starvation powers of any kind of ani- mals except man, Mr. Bergh and his society Would forthwith put a stop to the project, but as human beings are to be the sufferers the show can go on unmolested. ‘The disguised men who boarded a Norwegian Vessel in Cork harbor and took therefrom three cases of rifles were sadly disappointed in the <baracter of the arms they got. They thought they were setzing breech-loading rifles of an improved pattern, but the guns turned out to be rothing but old-fashioned smooth-bore muskets, which do nearly as much execution, when fired, in rear as tn front, ——_-~--e-__ The shipments of peaches trom Delaware, up to the present, by rail alone, mount to two thousand car loads of five hun- “red Dashets each, or a million baskets tn all, ‘There ts no record of the shipments by water, bot they fall far short of those by rail. The Feaches generally have been sent north and Pave not brought good prices, Much of the fruit J as been sold at prices too low to pay the farm- €re for picking, hauling and shipping. Sh = fortis.
