The platform crted by the majority of the committee de- @ unequivocally tn favor of maintaining ate crecit, and denounced repudiation tn ail s fons. ‘This adopted over the minor- ity report—sniuttted by the repudiation- isis—by about a three-fourths vote, and then the split occurred. It is too early yet to foresee what effect this split in the democra il have upon the polities of the state. Shouid the bolting democrats be to make a coalition with ihe republicans and greenbackers, a state ticket thus formed might win, though the chances, even then, would hardly be in its favor. it is very doudttul if these Auree elements of opposition to the reg- ular democracy can succeed in uniting thelr Yorees. There 1s too much diversity of senti- ment, to be crystalized even by the hope or prospect of winning the election. ‘The re- publicans have d in favor of state credit and their candidate for governor is a man of that stripe. Tuerefore, should the republicans ake any sort Of combination with the avowed repudiation- ists It woul undoubtedly drive thousands from their party to the support of the regular dem9- cratic ticket. The greenbackers would unite With anybody fora chance at a few offices, but they are tco few 11 numbers to either help or binder mm the canvass. The organization was never very strong ‘a the state, except in some localities, and what there was of it has nearly fallen to pieces. It is pretty safe to con- tude that there will not be any combi- nation of forces in opposition to the regular democratic tigker. Even if the republicans were Willing to join with the low-tax democrats, they could not »ford to withdraw thetr state ticket for the sake of the support of a faction so small as the repudiationists. The low-tax democrats cannot consistently support the republican Ucket as it stands, because the nominees are as firm in favor of state credit as the democrats. ‘Thus, the opponents of the democrats will, Probably, be divided, and that will assure the success of the latter. In regard to the national Ucket the bolt will not have any effect. Upon the basis of the census returns as re- Ported In the newspapers, an estimate of the Bext Congress has been made. The ratio of representation will be increased, of course, to avoid enlarging the membership of the House. ‘The supposition {s that under the new appor- Uonment the House will contain 300 m: . taking thi population of the United States to be 49.157 which ts claimed to be the result of tu . census enumeration. With this ratio of repre. { sentation the states of Alabama, [urtiana, Maine, New Hampshire, Obio, Pennsylvania, fennessee and Vermont wor se one | , and > twa, d with present representation. This would give u states a net gain of flve and the horth and northwest only a net gain of two. ‘The States that are now democrat ould lo: three and gain eight members of Congress, the states thal are now republican would seven and gain nine. T figures may be correct, in view Superintendent Walker's statement that the reported census returns now being generally used in the news- papers, are not authentic. But should the esti- mate here given of the next apportionme: turr out to be anywhere near right. 1t will sur- Prise the country, as the general calculation has been that the democratic states would lose and the republican states gain members under the new censt —<02--______ Senator Conkling’s absence from the repub- iiean conference in New York recently, ts ex- plained by the Cincinnat! That the wild- est storles were afloat about Garfield going to Nework to meet the Senator, and if they had Inet, says the Commercial, “the situation would have been harder to explain than tt 13 ag it stands.” It would appear from this that Sen- ator Conkling ts Influenced very mucn by wild Campaign stories.
