THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON. WEDNESDAY August 11, 1880. CROSBY 8. NOYES....Editor. than double that of any other daily paper published in Washington, and equal totha of all the other daily papers here added to- gether. ‘THE Stax has a direct wire from its news room to the Western Union Telegraph office in New York tty, from which wires radiate to all parts of the lobe, and is therefore enabled to secure the lateet Persons leaving town for the season, and Sum- wer travelers, can bsye Taz StaR mailed to them, ocetpaid, for fifty cente per month, the sddress betng ebsnged ss often sa desired. The money must acermpany the order in all cases. The Polittcal Sitnation. These who honestly wish to ascertain tue true status of the present political campaign must lock below the surface and also below, or way above, the reports of partisan papers. Repub licar ard cemecratic organs seem to beengaged ih a rivalry as to which can put before thetr ly colored reports and as. Ss of success. The declaration of a party even though it may wield great influence, That Its ticket ts certain to be elected and that the opposition ts gotng to pleces may cheer some partisans, but It conveys very little Information to the reader who Is searching for facts, The paper, political battle this year Is really narrowed down to a few states, the interesting question ts, How do those states stand, and what does the present situation of affairs indicate? As Maine holds her state election in September public at- tention Is first directed to that state, because there ts no longer assurance of republican suc- eess, In spite of reports to the contrary the fusion ef democrats and greenbackers bas been pretty solldiy cemented. There vag Gissatisfaction in both organizations to vereome, but - leaders have managed tosubdue it by promises to bestow the patron- In the event of ess, where it will do Politicians are mainly moved by e for power and patronage, and this Is the hat unites greenbac! and democrats Thetr only hope of sharing the state es Is to beat th and it ts plain to aceomplish he vantage The attempt session ed. E 3 for a good deal. ‘Again, the republicans are now in control of the state. They hold the tort. Indiana and Ohio hold thetr state elections tn Getober, and it 1s possible for these two states to settle the presidential election virtually, in that month. Ohio is conceded to be a repuDlican State, but the democrats mean to contest it this time, earnestly. Indiana ts generally consid- ered a democratic state, but the republicans are mnaking an almost superhuman effort to capture it, for the reason that such a victory would almost assure the election of their presidentia! Ueket. The chances are that when the votes are counted in October it will be found that Ohio has gone republican by an increased majority, and that Indiana has done the same Ubing for the democracy. The democratic man- agers realize that Indtana ts the key to their whole position now, and that to lose it is to lose all. Therefore, they are concentrating all their energies and all their means upon that state, ‘They have the advantage of position and m2- jority; they are In power, and the preatige of their past continued successes counts for a good deal. Should the republicans lose Maine the effect will operate against them in both Ohio ard Indiana in October. If they carry Maine the contest in the October states will be waged with even more determination. Should Ohio go against phe republicans, or Indiana agalost the del that result would give evidence Of 8 political reaction that would surprise the best-infornted politicians of both parties, and it would then be easy to predict the result in November. The International Commission on the World’s Fair to be held in New York In 1Ss3 had a meet- ing tn that city yesterday, but did not do much but talk. The talk moreover was not particu- larly encouraging. It was stated by Mayor Cooper that all the great international exposi- tions heretofore held have had governmental ald. The Philadelphia Centennial Exposition received from the city of Philadelphia $1,500,000 and $1,909,000 from the state of Pennsylvania, and an advance (afterward repaid) of $1,590,000 from the United States. Under existing laws the city of New York cannot make a donation or subscribe to stcck. If public ald is required, it would Le necessary for the commission to make application to Congress or to the legisla ture of New York. Other speakers from different states urged the necessity of speedy action, especially in the states whose legis. jatures only meet biennially; and it was added that unless New York exerted ttself it would be useless to go before tue people of the otber states and ask for their co-operation. ‘The committee on sites reported, and it would appear that no decision, even at this late day, bas been reached fn regard to the location. ‘The wrangle ts still kept up in behalf of a score or more different sites; among which are the “Inwood,” “Harlem,” “Manhattan Square,” “Morning and Riverside Parks,” “Brooklyn,” “Harkm Flats,” “Port Morris,” “Above Port Morris,” “East Side,” “Fleetwood” and “Central Park.” Really the time has come when the New Yorkers must take hold of this Uing mm earnest if their Worll'a fair is not to be a mortifying failure. With all the wealth in that city it onght not to be the work of a day to get a million dollars Subscription to set the enterprise in motion on a cash basis. The squabble about a site should ext ke settled. and then the people of the country would begin to think the projectors of the Falr meant business, and would no doubt give their co-operation to make It a success. From now to 1583 1s @ very short time In which to get up a word's fair, but Americans can do a gocd Geal in two years, when they set about it. ——~-—____. The democratic state convention In Georgia baving talled to agree upon a candidate for gov- ernor, it ts quite likely that the several gentle. Meh belictted for will feel at Mberty to make the race. While tbfs contest over the governorship bas not benefitted the democratic organization, it has not Givided It suMctently tomake a defeat Of that party even probable. Nearly two-thirds Of the convention persistently supported Gov. Colquitt for renomination, and the {ndications are that fully that proportion of democrats will Cast thelr votes for him. Even if the republi- cans, independents and dissatisfied democrats Could unite upon @ single candidate, the usual democratic majority in the state ts so large that they could not defeat Colquitt. But there is no €arthiy prospect of any such coalition taking Le fleld. The democrats who opposed Colquttt'’s renomination are pound, by their participation “in the convention, to stand by the regular Organization, and, no doubt, they would even ‘Support the man they dislike ff that were neces- ‘Sary to beat the republicans. There ts no Pros- pect of disrupting the solid south this year, but, whether Hapcock be elected or defeated, the division will Come very soon after the presiden- tial election. If Hancock ts elected, then the diyision In the south wili occur about the dis- position of patronage; and if he is thousands In that section will conclude that they bave followed the democratic party long enough. — ——-+2-—____ ‘The unportation of tron into this country ftom Great Britain has, for the first six months of this year, increased 413 per cent over that tor the same period of 1879.
