THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON. TUESDAY... August 10, ISSO. —————————_———___—_———— CRORBY 8. NOYES... -Edit The Evening Star has@ reguiar, perma- nent. bona fide daily circulation more tham double that of any other daily paper Published in Washington, ond equal totha of all the other daily papers here added to- gether. —————— THE Star has a direct wire from Its news room to She Western Union Telexraph office in New York ey, from which wires radiste to all parts of the globe, and ix therefore enabled to secure the latest ews by its own operator from every quarter up to Within s few moments of going to press. It is the only evening paper south of Philadelphia which re cetves exclusively the Associated Press dispatches. d, Galerari LADLES. The money ‘must accompany the order in all cases. Our Crops this Year. ‘The estimate upon the wheat crop of 1850 Is that ft will reach 450,000,000 bushels and that of this 150,000,000 bushels, at least, will be surplus. The figurers caleulate, upon this basis, that the surplus will exceed the European demand, and therefore the price will not be up to the figures Of the past two years. “Anything lower,” says one journal, “will mean loss of ordinary profits to thousands of farmer While tt may mean Joss of “ordinary profit” it will not cause actual Joss to the farmers. It !s well understood that the short crops tn Europe for several years past created an unusual demand for ‘American wheat, and consequently {t com manded an unusual price. In increasing their acreage of wheat sown for this year, far- mers were generally advised that they could not reasonably expect to obtain tie prices of Jast. year, a5 another fatlure of the Crop would not, probably, occur. Tb that the farmers of this country can sell wheat at prices considerably below those of Ia And still make a fair profit. As has been shown, ‘With the present facilities for transportation, American Wheat can compete in European mar- kets, In price, with the production of that coun- try. Should the abundant yield of tnts year re- duce the price. as It doubtless will, the demand Will batur increase, and the chances are that a arket will be found for the Amer!- can surp’ It fs already predicted, also, that there will be an overproduct of cotton this year. It Is estl- mated that the aggregate crop of the southern States will reach 6,250,000 Dales, and that only 4,000,000 bales can be expected to fl abroad, leaving the remainder—2 home consumption. In the first place this estt- mate is too large. The crop of this year, from all accounts, will exceed that of last year, but not by any such figures as are giv the esti- Mate here quoted. In some portions of the south the cotton worm 1s doing evsiderable damage, and, upon the whole, it looks as if 5,500,000 bales would be a pretty ifderal esti- mate for the aggregate crop of this year. In 1875 home manufacturers used 1,565,900 bal in 1879 home consumption Increased to 1, It ts reasonable to agmclude that the increase in home consumption this year will be proportion- ately greater than that of 179 over 1375, De cause of the continued improvement in busi- ness Of all kinds. Besides, the number of cot- ton factories has been increased, and those that were I existence a year ago are now running on full time and are employing thetr utmost capacity to meet the demand upon them. The Indications are that cotton will command a price that will yield a fatr profit to the planter. —_—_~.+_____ All signs in the political firmament point to general dissolution of the greenback party, Resumption and prosperity killed it. In the @arkest days of business depression the green- back theory took some hold upon the popular Maind because .t promised relief. The people Wanted money, and greenbackism promised to supply everybody. The party was strongest at the beginning of its existence. Its Ideas of government finances could not bear the light of discussion. Just as the few men who had nourished the bantling known as the “rag baby” began to reap some reward in the way of political honors from it, resumption became a fixed fact, prosperity returned, the idle obtained work, and the party collapsed. In Indiana, Where the greenbackers polled nearly 40,090 Votes in 1875, ft 1s difficult for them to rally men enough to make up tickets, bere and there. ‘The leaders have generally announced their return to efther the republican or democratic party, and all reports agree that the green- backers will only poll, this year, a few thou- Sand—5,000 or 6,000—votes In the stata. It ts the dissolution of the greenback party which chiefly invests the result in Indlana with so much doubt. It fs almost impossible to tell which party will get the larger proportion of those who were greenbackers at the last im- Portant election. ees ‘The action of the grand jury of Judge Blatch- ford’s court, in New York, in returning indtet- ments for manslaughter against the parties responsible for the Seawanhaka disaster will give general satisfaction. The laws for the pro- tection of the travelling public have almost be- come a dead letter in this country. Steamboat and railway accidents involving friguttul loss of life have, heretofore,ca)led forth no enforcement of the laws Intended to prevent such accidents. When carelessness was fastened upon those charged with the care of the living freight no penalty severer than severe newspaper condem- Bation has been inflicted upon them. At last there is a promise that this lenient way of dealing with those who are to blame for disasters like that of the Seawanhaka is to be changed fora more Figid and just course. If the work begun by the grand jury is carried out faithfully the people will feel that they are to be protected by the Jaws in relation to railway and steamboat lines, and the officers of these lines will exert them- Selves to prevent accidents. ———— ‘The conundrum why Senator Conkling staid away from the New York republican conference has not yet been solved. One report has had It that he absented himself because of Garield’s Inability to carry out a contract to displace Merritt from the custom house. Secretary Sherman, tt is stated, refused to allow Merritt to be sacrificed, hence the hitch. On tue other hand, it has been htnted that Conkil ng absent- ed himself as a matter of policy, in order to do away with the Idea that there was any dicker- ing on hand between him and Gartield. On all ‘sides It has been conceded, however, that Conk- Itng’s support of the Gartleld ticket was neces Sary to Its success in New York. Oa this point the usually well Informed New York correspon- Gent of the Philadelphia Ledger says tha’ “General Arthur 1s authority for the assurance ‘that in two or three weeks from thts time there will be no occasion to complain that the cam. paign ts languishing tn New York, nor that Senator Conkling ts continuing hts policy of duasteriy activity.” eo ‘The three sons of the late Oakes Ames have ‘published a defense of their father in his rela- Uons with the credit mobiller. They appeal to he American people to remember what their father undertook and accomplished in the way of completing the trans-continental rallway ‘ls motive tn taking oid of the gigantic enter~ Prise, which seemed to appal otner capitalists, Was, say his sons, a patriotic one. It {s matn- tained that Mr. Ames never sought or intended to bribe any person, and, as proof of this, it Is asserted that he was not Seeking legislation. ‘The address of the Messrs. Ames ts argumenta- tive and well put, but does not really throw any new light upon the credit mobilier affair, _—_—_——— | aa a BA’ SUES ‘140 8th st., between G and H.
