The money must accompany the order in all cases. Failure te Fuse. The attempt to get up a compromise elec_ toral ticket between the funders and readjust- ets In Virginia seemed to be making some headway a week or two ago, but on the whole as not prospered, and the report comes from Woodstock, Va., that the mass meeting an- ounced to be held there Saturday for the pur- Fose of effecting a fusion proved to be an Unqualified tatlure. None of the leading poll- Lclans of the state invited to be present put In An appearance. The invitations sent out met With ho response, or were answered by peremp- tory declinations to be present. The meeting Was not held for the reason that there was no speaker of any prominence to address it. All that was effected was to obtain the sig- natures of a number of the farmers present toa Petition addressed to the chairmen of the state centra! tees Of both factions asking for the compromise. The fact seems to be that the leaders of the two factions detest and distrust each other in about equal proportions, and that if any compromise ts effected it will be because Of an imperative demand to that effect by the Gemecratic masses, The readjuster leaders doubtles: nd rightly, tbat if they aban- Gon their distinct and aggressive organization they will never be 2 party. The funders, or thetr leaders, appear to think, on the other hand, that the permanent Lealthfuiness of their party would be greatly endangered by any association with the unclean —readjusters. It 18 probable that this wing of the democracy (the funders) expect to be able to draw enough votes from the readjuster ranks to carry their own electoral ticket. At any rate, they Beem to be the most obstinate of the two fac- tions in refusing acompromise. On the other hand, the Richmond ihiy, the organ of the re- adjusters, does not altogether reject the Idea of & compromise, but says “It will be time enough to consider it when made by competent au- thorit It adds that it ‘has no hesitation, however, in saying that !t smacks too much of the famous presidential commission, of which ‘We have had enough.” oe Atthe annual meeting of the New Jersey State Dental Society, recently, 1t was agreed that the use of anesthetics has become en_ Urely too general in the profession. Dentists tn their anxiety to acquire practice advertise to extract teeth without pain, which means that the patient is to be placed under the tntiaence of anwsthetics. Progressive dentists are be ginning to condemn this practice and to insist that anesthetics shall only be used in perform- ing exceedingly painful operations, The lead- ing surgeoxs of the land are also taking a de- Cided stand against the frequent use of chloro- form and ether. The tndfscriminate use of ‘these drugs has caused death in numerous cases and shattered systems in others. The Opinion that anvsthetics should only be used in Cases where the operation Is so painful and pro- tracted that the patient might otherwise die Under it, is becoming popular among surgeons, physicians and dentists. ——_ ++, Gen. Hancock's letter to Gen. Sherman, writ- ten in December, 1Si6, on the subject of the then pending presidential controversy, ts made public. This letter was forced from its place among Gen. Sherman's private papers by the allegation that the democratic candidate, under the seal of confidenti+! correspondence, had ‘uttered treasonable sen'iments; that he had avowed bis purpese to recognize Tilden as the lawfully elected President, in the event that the democratic House of Representatives should Geclare him such. The essertion of Gen. Sher- man that Hancock had never written him a let ter containing such sentiments was not sat factory to the politictans, who hoped to find Something in tt damaging to the opposition Candidate, and the resuit has been the publi- Cation of the entire letter. In this communi- cation Gen. Hancock discussed the then presi- Gential situation from a democratic standpoint, but there ts rething whatever In it that 1s not Consistent with loyalty and devotion to the Country. Whatever else may be sald about Hancock, it cannot be doubted that he ts ag Joyal to the union as any patriot who shed his bleod in its cause. The Imformation that the merchants of Can- Gahar are burying their treasure tn the fear that Ayoob Khan may capture the place, indicates that the British garrison {s not entirely con- Ddebt of tts ability to resist an onslaugh'. The ews generally sent to the English pres3 In regard to the situation in Afghanistan ts to the effect that Candahar 1s not in any danger, but Occasionally information that the garrison ‘s not tco secure leaks out. It $s certain that the recent victory of Ayoob Khan has led thou- Sands of recrufts into his ranks, and with an enlarged army be may undertake to strike a decisive blow before the arrival of British rein- forcement ——-+-+e —___ Mr. Gledstone, the British premier, who caught a chill in leaving the House of Com- mons Friday night and was attacked with con- Gestion of the lett lung, is reported by cabie to- day somewhat better, but the report is coupied With the statement that travel had been shut Of from Lis street, which would indicate that is condition is critical Mr. Gladstone was born Dec. 29, 1899, and Is therefore over seventy Years of age. His vigor is rather exceptional for a public man whose life has been as labor- ious, and he may be able to rally from this attack, though the chances, at his age, are Sgainst him. ———— The bull-fight in New York city last Saturday Gvening proved to be so tame an affair that it disgusted even the president of the soctety for the prevention of cruelty to antmals. The ‘Steers that were turned into the arena were not Gisposed to hurt anybody, but whenever one of them was goaded into showing the least resist- @nce the tumid ‘orreros leaped the railing and ett him alone in his glory. Massachusetts, like the District of Columbia, 4s still subject to some of the old biue laws, ac- Wording to a recent decision of the supreme Court of that state. A gentleman who had ‘riven toa funeral from Boston to Mount Au- urn returned by way of Charlestown to make Bcall. In the latter town he met with an acct- Gent and was injured because of a Gefective Zhoroughfare. He sued the corporation for @amages, but the supreme court held that the old law probibiting anybody from travelling “on the Lord's day except from necessity or charity” was still in force, and as the plaintift ‘Was not on the road in elther of these causes he Could not be allowed damages, Says the Baltimore american: “It ts a tact not generally remembered that Gen. Garfield 13 the author of the law under which the Present census is being taken.” A mistake, Hon. S. s. ‘Cox, of New York, is the author of the existing census law, and he was made chairman of the Hisuse census committee because his Dill had been adopted by Congress. ‘The free baths of New York city were enjoyed Jast Week by 161,164 males and 115,003 females, 2b average of over 46,000 daily.
