Platt testified that after he reached the wharf he noticed a lady and gentieman cros-- lag his path, going ay towards the water; they were about ten feet in froni of him. He found that they still kept on in their course; he bad untill then thought that they would turn when they saw the pile in front of them; he saw that they did not turn and he shouted, “Look out, look out, tha% is water,” just a3 they both pe overboard. He jumped to the post and called out, ‘A man overboard! a rope! help! help!” Saw Carmody jump in and the man. SepDEN DBATHS.—Yesterday morning, Mr. L. of this city, while sitting at a table in the Atlantic Garden, Norfolk, Va., fell dead. The deceased was engaged there in obtaining Statistics of the fruit trade for the Census Bureau, and had been there a tew weeks. His labors in this work covered Baltimore and this city. THE Latest TorrEDO BoaT.—At Saltonstall Lake two representatives of the Lake Torpedo company, the manufactory of which is located at Hartford, are engaged {n experimenting with one of the company’s torpedo boats. The boat is a comparatively recent. invention, and the objects of the experiments is to improve it ina Yarlety of ways. ‘The Doat is made of sheet fron, 1s about 25 feet in length and 1S inches in diameter, and is pointed at both ends. The motive power Is a screw propelled by an engine which derives its motion from the generation of gas. The course of the boat is directed from the shore or vessel from which it 1s sent by means of electricity, paying out wire for the transmission of the electricity as It advances. The explosive power is dynamite, of which 125 pounds are used in loading each boat. Boats of this kia have been sold to the Russian government and to the Peruvian government, and some are in course of construction for the United States government. Among other experiments to be tried will be one to submerge the boat and pro- Pel it when hidden beneat the water. If they can obtain a sut- Gelency of hands, which is always a difficult matter in a lazy land, these companies are pretty sure to prosper.” Lucy at 303 ri Dr. Diner's Herore Datarrer DEAD.—MIs3 Elizabeth L, Diller died in the hospital on Ran- dall’s Island yesterday from the burns she celved on the Seawanhaka, which was destroy- ed by fire in Ltttle Hell Gate on Monday night, June 2s, Miss Diller was the eldest daughter of the Rev. Dr. Jacob W. Diller, rector emeritus of St. Luke’s Protestant Episcopal church, Brooklyn. Dr. Diller, who was seventy years old, was with her on the steamer. When the fire broke out he and she stood on the boy hemmed in by the advancing flames. He feeble and dazed. She managed to fasten a lite- preserver about him, but was unable to per- ade or force him to spring overboard. She ng to him as long as she could and tae flames had burned her face and shoulders horribly, when, seeing that it was impossible to stir him, he kissed him good-by and sprang into the Water. He was burned to death where he stood. Miss Diller was picked upin the water so se verely burned that her life was despaired of, She had been at the hospital since. She was 45 years old.
