THE EVENING STAR. YASHINGTON. FRIDAY........ -July 9, 1880, CROSBY 8. NOYES.... Editor. ‘THE Braz has s direct wire from its news room to the Western Union Telegraph office in New York sity, from which wires radiate to all parts of the Blobe, and is therefore enabled to secure the Istest ews by its own operator from every quarter up to Within a few moments of going to press. It is the only evening paper south of Philadelphia which re jusively the Associated Preas dispatches. Persons leaving town for the season, and Sum- Mer travelers, can have Ta® STAR mailed to them, postpaid, for fifty cents per month, the address being chansed as often as desired. The money must accompany the order in all cases. ‘The first stege has been reached in the row that was bound to come sooner or later between the old and new schools of medicine over the case of Dr. Tanner, the forty-day-faster, In New York. The charge is now flatly made by some of the former that the 9 patient has been surreptitiously supplied with food by watchers g the course of the The charge does not seem to be perf alned, Dut the effect Of it will doubtiess hrow a cloud upon the whole transaction, and to convince at least a portion of the medical faculty that the task undertaken !s a physical impossibility and that the patient is a humbug, as they have all along claimed. Whether the experiment, had it been conducted without any suspicion or cause for any, would have been productive of good, nis either in case of failure or suevess, may per- haps be nm to éuestion; but it cer- tainly wou!d have been more to the credit of Dr. Hammond and the other regulars, as they Style tuemselves, had th ner’s proposition that th tests and do the watching, instead of standing aloof and crying fraud, as they nowdo. Had they done this ft ts likely that the experiment y aceepted Dr. Tan- should prescribe the World have added something to sctentitic kuowledge, whatever the result might have been, because then the public would have re- eelved the conclusions as final. As it {s, there Will probatly always be som ood faith of the transaction, the value of tts fruits; and for this unsatisfac- tory result the regular or old school practition- rs would seem to be about as much to blame a3 those who originated and are carrying on the joubt about the ell as about experiment. They mustn't keep on tosisting that the loesn’t move because they don’t Want it to, or they will ge’ one of these ————+--__—_ The reeent 1 ste disasters have the New York authorities to a of their duty in regard to secur- to passengers. The U.S. attorney for that district has issued libels against nine Steamers belonging to that por* for violations of one kind or another of the laws relating to passenger travel, and it is likely that simtlar Proceedings will follow tn a number of other cases. It would have been much better had this action been taken six or eight weeks ear- Her in the season, but it is not too ate yet to accomplish a vast amount of good if vigorously pursued from this time out. In this connection it is suggested that a careful oficial examina- tion of the steamers plying on the Potomac might be productive of beneficial results, so far at least as the public iscopecerned. It is charged that the laws are frequently violated by a hhumber of them, both in carrying more passen- gers than they are entitled to,—especially on the occasion of excursion parties,—and In not Providing sufficient facilities for escape in case of disaster. It may be that these allegations are hot well founded: but a careful investiga- tion of the whole subject could do no harm, and every Clause of the law looking to the safety of Pacsengers should be strictly enforced. a The frightful mortality in New York during the last two or three weeks, particularly among children, is beginning to excite alarm, as well it should. Happily Washington has not been Visited by any unusual amount of sickness this Year, and we belleve the testimony of the medi- cal faculty to be that the city israther healthier how than {s usual at this season. In fact, not- Witbstanding the increase tn population, the death rate seems to be decreasiag, and there is Uttle doubt that the same system of vital sta- Usties appiled every where would show Wash- ington to beone of the healthiest cities of its ‘Size in the world. —<-—____ All present indications justify the belief that the republicans of New York are going to do ‘their best to carry that state this fall, and they Are not without grounds for hope that thelr tiforts will prove successful. They realize that, Wi.h the Gemocratic factions united on the naticral ticket, and with the 56,000 majority for Tilaen Mm 1576 staring them in the face, it will bea pretty tough job tocarry the state for Garfieid and Arthur; but they are golng to try. Arthur himself isa New Yorker, and well understatd how to manage the political machine 80.as to secure success. That is something. Then again, the executive committee recagaize the importance of concentrating the sinews of war at that point, permitting other sections to take care of themselves. That alsomeans much. It 4s furthermore understood that Secretary Sher- man has recently been in close counsel with the committee, and from tuts conference constd- erable Is expected in the way of steps for a vig- orous campaign. In shot, it Is {Intended to have all the most effective crators in the party in New York within the nex’ sixty days, with mass meetings to give ther opportunity to make their points before the largest audiences attainable, and to take all step. possible to se- cure that victory which ts so essential to repub- Hean success thts fall. —_—_—_—_ Bre KLIDGE, THE PHOTOGRAPH: inakes One Cabinet or 1 bree Car tEESt pha fo: @1.
