THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON. WEDNESDAY...........Junme 30, 1880, ——— CROSBY 8. NOYES....Editer. Bews by its own operator from every quarter up to within a few moments of going to press. It is the Only evening paper south of Philadelphia which re- Geives exclusively the Associated Press dispatches. Persons leaving town for the season, and Sum- ther travelers, cam have THe STAR mailed to them, Postpaid, for fifty cents per month, the address being changed as often as desired. The money must accompa ny the order in allcases. "The question whether Gov. Cornell will or Will not convene the legislature of New York in extra session in order to pass the Dill intro- duced during ts late session to change the methed of choosing her presidential electors is one that 1s exciting a good deal of interest among politicians. The plan, our readers may remember, ts to abandon the present system of Voting for the whole state electoral ticket by the people of the state at large, and to give to the people of each district the right of voting Separately for its own elector, just as repre- sentatives in Congress are now chosen. By this change the republicans would be sure of at least seventeen electors from New York, ; however the popular vote of the state might be In November, and It 1s to secure this cer- tainty that some of the leaders of that party are urging 1 ge. That each state has the right to prescribe the mode of choosing its own electors, 1s unques- tioned. Whether the republicans would in the : end gain anything by this change, should they make it, 1s however another thing altogether. | ‘There fs danger that a measwre so purely par- Usan In Its purposes and results, adopted on the eve of a presidential election, might produce a reaction not only in the ‘state where tt s put into effect, but in other states,as well ~-3 thas lose more tothe party ‘uci would gain, just Sc ive recent jndicial decision in Indiana which Was intended to benefit the democratic party Is likely to injure it. It may be sald, however, that should the republicans conclude to take the chances of the proposed change, it will hardly do for the democrats to und ke to make any capital out of it. Nobody outside and very few persons inside that organization will serlously claim that its leaders would not promptly avail themselves of any such opportunity to insure a Party advantage. People are very much allke, no matter what political tlag they march under. It fs given out that General Hane letter » democratic nomination for the is to be an “elaborate and compre- hensive state paper.” If General Hancock 1s Wise he-will neither write nor sign any such document. He should profit by the example and fate of the Illustrious gentleman after ‘whom he was named, who once ran for the Presidential ofice, and seriously damaged his chances therefor by undertaking the double role of soldier and statesman. If General Han- cock is content to stand on the former pedestal he will be all right, but if he essays to stand on both Le is in danger of losing his footing and falling between. Any way, he had better not indulge in many or very long letters until the election is over. It 1s only just to say that the editorial para- graph in yesterday’s Stan in relation to the burning of the steamer Seawanhaka did injus- i” tice to the captain of that vessel. It was based, We need hardly explain, on the first telegraphic Teport of the disaster, which subsequent ac. Counts do not confirm. It now appears that Captain Smith did his whole duty; ly and hercicaily, and that it 1s largely Que to him that the loss of life was not greater. While Washingtonians perspire and scold about the hot weather, they should be thankful they are not In New Jersey. At South Amboy yesterday the mercury reached 102° in the shade; at Perth Amboy it was at 99, while at Long Branch it touched 9 on shore and 95 on the per. Several persons were prostrated by the heat at the latter place, and some of them Will probably die from its effects. ——_—---_____ If that promised cold wave hasn’t reached here, we have at least got a little sprinkling of the spray, so to speak, and that is something to bethapkful for. A drop of six or eight degrees in the mercury adds wonderfully to one’s com- fort during a heated term. QPHING LEAF TEA AT 50 CENTS A POUND, Unri ued in flavor, purity and cheapness.
