She took fire while off Randall's Island, East river. The fire was caused by an explosion In the en- gine room, and the middle of the steamboat was soon in flames. Pilot Chas, Smith remained at his post until he was nearly burned to death, and succeeded in beaching the vesseon the sunken meadow adioining the island. Many persons Sprang overboard and were drowned Many others “in the stern of the vessei could not get off and were burned to death. APHIC ACCOUNT BY A FIREMAN Abeil, one of the firemen of Ue boat, makes the following statement lauding at the foot of 33d str and It Was about fifteen m Teached Little Heil Gate. Ve made our 4:3) o'clock, w at later wh ute tu T was sitting tn th Wing or port gangway, after having started bilge puiup, when I heard a nots and on look- ing arcund Saw fire pouring out of the f 1 vot up and irted to make mny way tato tn om, but the Hames were too much for m: Were Just off Randall's Island, and ruaning Ward I yelled to the captain, who was at the wWheel,to bead forshore, but he shouted pack that he couid not. 1 then ran into the cabins forward and urged the steward and passengers to save themselves, ney did not suspect that the vessel Was on fire then, as no smoke or lame was blown in that direction, At that time the Woodwork of the vessel about her center w: burning like tinder, and the tlames were mak- ing their way towards both ends of the boat. There were probably about 300 persons on toord. Men were jumping from the hurricane deck Into the water, and a lange num ber of te ritied ehildien and’women were huddied near the stern of the boat. T climbed over the rall hear of the bow, and several mea almost Jumpea upon me beforel took to thewater to save sci, I found a life-preserver tloating near nd was going to put iton whena man ched it, aud I, knowing I could swim, and Uinking he could not, let him have i. and sWain for Ward's Island, which I reach- a then to man a_ boat st UD passengers in the he Seawanhaka was flualiy beached dall’s Island, but she soon burned to the Water's edge. Capt. Chas. P. Smith was at tae Wheel and stuck to his post to the last. His face and body were badly burned. Smal! boats came to the rescue from every direction, The Steatmboats Granite State, bound for Hartford: the Osseo, Miunehannock and Sylvan Glen had boats manned and sent to our assistance. The Clothing of many children on board caught fire, and some of them were severely buraed. A lamp, which I carried in my hand into the tauk-room, which 1s back of the tire-room, and separated by a board partition, where I changed my clothes, 1 brought back into the fire-room and set it down. Iam sure the fire could not have originated from the lamp, as the of] would not explode nor burn without a wick. You could pre some of the oil in a saucer, and it would not ourn if you put a match to it. Therefore, I feel certain it could not have caused the fire, and I cannot imagine what did. Engineer Weeks put On a 1ull head of steam, I am told, in response to a signal from the captain, and then climbed up among the machinery, and was seen stand- ing on the upper deck trying to raise the valves, so that the steam could escape and an explosion be avolded. We never carried over 34 pounds ot steam.” ANOTHER ACCOUNT. Engineer Weeks’ son was a fireman on the boat, and at the time the firestarted was watc ing the steam and water indicator. He say “The only members of the crew I understand missing are Josiah Hasbrouck, cook, and his grandson, Charies Hasbrouck, who was employ- ed on the boat. We hadacrew of about four deck hands, one deck boy, engineer, two fire- men, captain, clerk, superintendent, wheelman, surerintendent’s clerk, porter, steward and cook. The crew did theit duty like men, and few of them lost their presence of mind.” You can imagine how cool they were, when tue clerk, who was Collecting fares, as soon as he real- ized that the boat was on fire, returned to his omice and secured all our money he had lert there. Among the passengers were Richatd O'Gorman, two of the Hi r pub- Ushers, and a number of other gentlemen, who are in the habit of going to their homes on the Lor land shore by our boat. All of these, { believe. escaped with thelr lives The ves- sel burned like powder after the flames once started, and it was a terrible scene. Surieking women and children were huddled aft until some of their clothes caught fire, and those oa the forward part of the boat were men, some of whom had been cut off trom coramuricating with or golng to the rescue of their female relatives and friends by the flames, which burnt flercest about the center of the boat. Mr. Morris, our porier, saw a child lying on its back, and was ‘going to jump overboard to save it when a frantl: woman clutched his arm, saying, "You are a stroug man and Ta Woman without any friends on board; for God's sake help me.’ The porter left the child to itself and saved the woman. ‘The only one of the Seawanhaka’s boats gotten out was one which had a canvas fastened over it. After the canvas was taken off the body of a child, about two years old, was found lying in some water in the bottom of the boat. Nobody seemed to know how it got there. After I got on Kandall’s tsland I was almost exhausied. A lady who fell into the gangway from a ladder was saved with great diilicuity. Several per- sons jumped overboard forward and were caught by the wheel and drowned.” RESCUED. About forty of the ill-fated passengers, some more or less burned and scalded, were rescued by members of the Eastern Boulevard Club taken to the club house, opposite the se the disaster. At midnight twelve bodies—nine adults, one chiid and two babies—were brought to the morgue at Bellevue Hospital by the hos- ital steamboat. Among the bodies is taat of Mrs. Ritchie, of Locust Grove, L. L It is said some of the crew did not do thelr duty, but Jumped into the river and swam ashore. TWO UNHAPPY MOTHERS. The New York Herald to-day says: A boat- man sald. (and the story was confirmed by others), that he rowed up to the wreck, or a3 near as he could get to her for the heat, and Saw a mother at the guard ratls with two’ chil- dren, one of whom was about four years old and the other was an infant in arms. “The mother stood shrieking most piteously for help and seeming to be entirely crazed. She was holding the youngest child to her breast andthe elder suspended over the water by one hand. The boatman rowed up and caught hold of the older child and pulled ber away from her mother and saved her. She was burned Some, but he thought she was not dangerously injured. He called to the mother to jump over with the other child, but she either did not un- derstand or was afraid to do so, and only left the boat when she fell dead into the water. An- other mother and child were seen in almost, ex- actly the same position on another part of the boat, who met exactly the same fate. The mother stood after her dress was all burned away and her burned, as It to those who looked, almost toa crisp. Still she beld her position and strove with outstretched arms to keep her child clear from the flames, It was a vain effort, an ‘the bodies of both dated thedid ay rece on farm near Bladensburg.
