THE EVENING STAR. DOUBLE SHEET. oN or, SATURDAY. ---.- Jame 26. 1890. CROSBY 5S. NOYES....Editor. waar bosease is connected with the wires of the Na- phone Exchange and with the Western Union Te phone Exchanwe. Both these agencies esn therefore be availed of in sending to Tae Stam Sdvertisements, orders for the paper to be served, news, or any information, at any hour of the day free of cherze. These facilities are a wreat conve- pience, and will be sppreciated by the customersof TT} Sra. Persons leaving town for the ae and Sum- mer travelers, can have Tae Stax mailed to them, postpaid, for fifty cents per month, the address being chanced as often as desired. The money must accompany the order in all cases. School Reforms. im to-day’s STAR we reprod an article from Siruer's Monthly which con- tains a number of excelent suggestions in re- gard to reform in our publle school system. ‘The imporiance, nay the necessity, of having our public schools impart practical as well as theoretical knowleage Is at last coming to be recognized. These schools are intended prima rily for the benefit of the poor, and it 13 essen- Ual that the boy or girl who must depend upon hisor her exertions for support in life should be taught some way of earning that support. ‘To cram them with book-learning does not meet the requirements of the case at all, and often does more harm than good. Another reform which will be productive of incalculable good to the country can be ac- complished by reducing or cutting off entirely the high-grade schools, and in their stead and with the money thus saved, increase the schools of lower grade, As TH STAR has more than cnee pointed out, the public schools are de_ signed for the benefit of the poor, who are not able to educate their children. These children must be prepared to fight the battle of life single-handed, and but few of them are really benfitted, even if they could afford the time to Gevote to it. by a finished education. As a rale, those who desire their children to be thorough- iy educated, are able to pay for that luxury, by atronizing private academies ind colleges, and iniversities established for the purpose; but, ‘whether they are able or not, their children e no right to such accomplishments at pub- ¢ expense, While the children of other people € compeiled, for want of school room and her reasons, to go without apy education at Elsewhere ———_--___. Tet the democrats of the nation say what they yiease, they owe a great deal to Mr. Tilden. cle relieved them of their great difficulty by taking his name from the lst of candidates be- fore the Cincinnati convention. By his self-ab- negation he opened the way to harmony in the party. Had he determined to contest the nomi- nation, the fight at Cincinnat! between the two factions would have been more bitter than that at Chicago between the supporter3 and oppo- nents of Gen. Grant. A defeat of Mr. Tilden for the nomination, had he insisted upon it, would have assured the defeat of the democracy in New Yor! Even John Kelly, with all his hatred of Tilden, sald that no democrat could carry New York without the latter's support. By declining to enter the lists for the nomina- tion Tilden gave his party harmony and unity instead of division and bitterness. He held, in fact, the destiny of his party, as far as any pros- pects of success In this canvass were concerned. He had friends, as delegates in the convention; who were ready and willing to fight for him to the bitter end had he but sald the word. Mr. Tilden is no favorite of ours, nor have we ever sought to defend him in anything, but now that the old man fs out of the way we do think his own party — to give the —— claimant his due. One of the well-known democratic captains who was reduced tothe ranks by the Cincin- nati convention {s Mr. John G. Thompson, of Ohio, sergeant-at-arms of the House of Repre- sentatives. For many years past he has repre- Sented his state upon the national democratic committee; but now he ts dropped and Editor Armstrong, of the Cleveland Plaintealer, suc- ceeds him. Polftical parties are as ungrateful as republics. Mr. Thompson was one of the first to begin laboring in behalf of Cincinnati as the place for holding the democratic conven- ton. He pleaded with his colleagues upon the committee and obtained promises to vote for Cincinnati long before the advocates of other cities were thinking of beginning work. When the queen city was chosen then Its population, and especially the democratic portion thereof, felt very grateful to Mr. Thompson. The demo- crats of other sections of the state praised him, too, but the first chance the Ohlo democracy got toserve him they ignored his claims and sneeremoniously sent him to the rear. ————— ‘The British House of Commons in expelling, or rather excluding Bradlaugh the English radical and atheist from the sezt to which he was elected, because he refused to take the pre- seribed oath, is just, probably, what that indl- vidual wanted. It will make him appear tn the light of a martyr or persecuted man, among the atheists, skeptics and free-thinkers generally, and they will rally to his support with the view of redressing his wrongs. Had he been Admitted to his seat his desire for notoriety Would, 50 doubt, soon have made him ridiculous im the eyes of all sensible people. A little whining and consid@able complaint of the treatment he has recetved wll perhaps secure his reélection again and again, and every now and then the House of Commons will be an- noyed by Bradlaugh seeking admission toa seat, One of the strong points that will be made by republican stump speakers In the presidential campaign ts that Garfield represents the volun- teer soldier, and therefore the people, while Hancock represents West Polnt and a so-called aristocracy. is well known, there 1s a Strong prejuice in the popular mind against West Point and the bearing of the graduates therefrom. The republican speakers will make all they can out of this and “whoop up the boys” on it. General Logan, who was a gallant Volunteer officer in the late war, fs especially at outs with West Point, and, it ts sad, intends to use the “volunteer oMlcer against the West Potnt graduate” for all tt ts worth. —o ‘The number of democratic papers that nave been “urging Gen. Hancock’s nomination for years” and “had no second choice” ts some. thing wonderful. According tothe editorial ex. pressions of to-day many of his party papers have been for Hancock since he was a little boy. Is it uncharitable to suspect that prospective Post offices and consulships have had any thing to do with these extraordinary displays of hind-sight wisdom ? -<e2-—___ Wisconsin played a prominent part in the se- lection of both republican and democratic nom- mations for President this year. Inthe Chi- cago convention the Wisconsin delegation led ‘the break In favor of Garfield, and at Cincinnati the delegation from that state was the first to change to Hancock and start the movement which promptly nominated him. According to the rules of politics, Wisconsin will De well taken Care of, no matter which party wins.
