EFFORTS TO ESCAPE THE GALLOWS, In the case of Bedford, Queenan and Pinn, who were yesterday sentenced to be hung on the 10th of September next for the murder of George Phillip Hirth on the 7th of January last, Tumors have been circulated trom time ¢ tien of important discoveries having been made as to facts and circumstances tei nding to show that these parties are innocent of the crime, and that Ben Johnson, the colored boy, who Was used as the principal witness — them, with other rtles, committed .e murder. ‘These all developments, it is claimed, have only recent come to the knowledge of counsel, and they have been very Indus- triously at work on them. The counsel, how- ever, are loth to give out what they have, or what it 1s sald they have, or as to what other proceedings they propose to take. It will be remembered that some weeks ago it was stated {hat what appeared to be a part of a burnt Watch had been found in an ash heap near the residence of Hester Johnson, and that Bud Warner, who has since gone to the penitentiary for burglary, had made a statement that Ben Johnson told him the day after the murder, that he and Roxey Ress had made a “swag,” and that Johnson hads watch buried en the commons. Although this state- ment has been the subject of conversation, the counsel decline to say whether if ts true or false, and they have not yet made public any- tubng shout the tdentification of the watca by the brother and intimate frieads of the de- ceased. After this statement bad been made by Warner, he made a much longer statement, giving quite a history of Ben Jounson two years prior to the murder, which, if true, ard the proor could be obtained. would likely result in Joheson’s conviction for several burglares.
