THE EVENING STAR. __ | L“™6"*7 4ssontmest WANTS FOR RENT AND SALE. WASHINGTON. WEDNESDAY........... June 16, 1880, CROSBY 8%. NOYES....Editer. SS whe Evening Siar has a regular, perma- ment, bona fide daily circulation more than double that of any other daily paper Dudlished in Washington, and equal to that of all the other daily papers here added te- _———————————— THE Stax is connected with the wires of the Na- Persons leaving town for the season, and Sum- mer travelers, can have THE Sran mailed to them, postpaid, for fifty cents per month, the address being as often as desired. The money must accompany the order in all cases. ‘The democratic Congressmen are very unwill- ing to abandon Seymour as their presideatia! candidate, but the repeated evidences of his un- willingness to accept have convinced many of the party leaders that it is useless to give his name further consideration. Among the gen- tlemen mentioned for the nomtnation since it became plain that Seymour ts out of the ques- tion, Senator McDonald, of Indiana, seems to be considered a promising dark horse. He has al- ways been a firm and unytelding bard-money ‘n, and his record on this question, tt 1s urged, would render him acceptable to New York. He ® -pported the bills to restrict Chinese immigra- ton, and that would make him a favorite in the P.citie states, He ts as popular as Hendricks, and can certainly carry Indiana. ‘hese are the points that are being presented in behalf of Mr. McDonaid, and tf a dark horse ts to make the race, bis chance is second to none. The subject Of his candidacy was discussed among demo- cratic Congressmen yesterday, and to a sugges- tion that he should run for Vice President an intimate friend of Mr. McDonald declared, in Most emphatic terms, that the Senator “would not have the second place;” that he would rather return to the Senate, especially as he will become chairman of the judictary commit- tee upon the retirement of Senator Thurman. ‘Hendricks refuses to take the second place, too, and English does not want it; so the democrats will probably have to elther take their candi- date for President from Indiana or leave that State unrepresented on the ticket. The crashing together of the Anchoria and Queen, in the open sea on Sunday last, fol- lowing so soon upon the awful disaster on Long Island Sound, would seem to furnish grounds for an appreheaston of that sort. Accounts of the affair vary somewhat In detuils, but the fact that such a collision should occur in open fea, near inidday, and In good weather, even in @ fog, argues gross carelessness somewhere. ‘This theory seems to be fully borne out. further- more, by the statement~ of some of the passen- gers, which are to the eliect that the Anchoria Was going at a fast rate of speed, with sails Set. Fortunately tn this case neither vessel was lost, nor was there apy loss of life, but these circumstances appear to be more the result of good luck than good management. The crew of the Anchorta was badly demoralized, some of the men being the first to Jump into her boats and pull eway when lowered, and others refus- ing or falling to do any duty whatever. ae SS The Cineinnat! Enquirer, ina leading editorial article, virtually rules Senator Thurman off the presidential track. It insists that the Cincin- nati convention must not nominate an Ohio man to head its ticket; that Ohio 1s republican; that for the democrats to take a candidate from that state would be to make a test contest at the October election, which would give the re- publicans a great advantage; and, finally, that the democrats must shape their ticket with the view of carrying New York first. The Enquirer pays Senator Thurman a high compliment, and Says if the democratic convention chooses to accept the issue of an October contest in Ohio he fs the man to lead the fight. [he democratic leaders all realize and freely admit that their convention must turn its chief attention toNew York, but there a difficulty presents itself. Tilden controls the delegation from that state, and It is likely to obey his orders, whatever they may be. The convention will, from present in dica‘ions, be opposed to Tilden; but any move against him will be antagonized by that delega- ton. Gladstone enters upon the administration of the British government with a necessity for tn- creased revenue staring him in the face. He is compelled to increase taxation. because of the extravagance of Beaconsfleld’s government. ‘The proposed new commercial treaty with France will reduce the revenue considerably, ‘and the abolition of the malt tax also cuts it down more than a million pounds sterling an- ually. To meet this loss in the revenue, in part at least, Mr. Gladstone proposes to increase the income tax from five pence to six pence. By this plan the burden of increased taxation Will fall mainly upon the rich classes, which is probably a wise political move, as the exten- Stons of the franchise enable the poor, in very many boroughs, to outvote the rick. ‘The elevated railwa. 'y craze has reached Paris. M. Falic¢s, a distinguished engineer, proposes to Provide all the great arteries of that city with them. He proposes to try the scheme first of all along the grand boulevards, from the Bastile to the Madeleine. It not is likely, however, tha the project will meet with favor or prove suc- cessful If tested. In the first place, Paristans are too weil satisfied with their city as it is to be reconciled to any innovation that will change it3 Ways and appearance, and in the second Place they are never in hurry enough to make that rapid method of travel a necessity to their existence. Much Indigeation has been aroused In Cin_ cinnati at the extent to which the trees in that city have been injured and destroyed for the benefit of telegraph and telephone lines. The only prope: y of placing wires in a city is underground, and this plan will yet have to be adopted everywhere. Mr. Seymour's letter seems to settle things So far as he 1s concerned, andto unsettle them 80 far as his party Is concerned.
