The money must accompany the order in all cases. The hot struggle in Chicago, which at one time bade fair to break up the convention in a Tow, Or at least to leave the republican party in a hopelessly demoralized condition, furnishes as good an illustration a3 any one need want of the folly and danger of the Instruction system and the favorite son busi- ness In politics. The effect of instructing dele. gates to a state or national convention ts in- vartably to put the man above the cause, since it takes away from the representative so hamp- ered the quality of a free agent with discretion aud power to make the best possible selection in view of all the circurnstances which nave arisen ov which may arise. A national convention constituted of positively instructed delegates is Practically limiied to the few men—and they not always the best or strongest—whose friends may have been able to control a few district or state conventions, instead of being at liberty to Select the best and strongest candidate within their party lines, aftera full interchange of opin- jon and a careful canvass of the whole situation, Manifestly the true way ts for each district or State convention to select discreet, honest and Sagacious men for delegates, and leave the rest to thelr judgment and patriotism, in the full confidence that the whole body in convention assembled will make the best and strongest nomination and adopt the wisest and soundest platform of principles posstbie, all things con- sidered. A national convention stands In pre- cisely the same relation to its party that Con- ress does to the whole country. it would therefore be no more foolish or hurtful for the several congressional districts to direct their representative which laws to pass and which Bot to pass, when assembled together, than for a district or state convention to limit the action of its delegates by tron-bound Instructions to Vote for this or that man “first, last and all the ume.” —-<2--____ The national greenback convention, which meets in Chicago to-day, will not a:tract much attention or create any excitement. Following ‘upon the republican co vention, it will be like a calm after a storm. Ali political signs of the past year indicate that the greenback party has been rapidly disintegrating, and though it may put a presidential ticket In the fleld, it will searcely be regarded as a factor in the coming canvass. ‘The only state in which the organization will Cut any figure ts in Maine, and ft gets im- portance there only because the democrats have united with it. The fusion between the two parties In Maine has been very successfully accomplished, and it makes the result in that State at the fall election doubtful. Hitherto the hard-money democrats have persistently refused to join or even recognize the fusion. They have, indeed, opposed it by running straight democratic tickets. This year, however, they have lald aside their scruples on the money question and have united earnestly with the greenbackers. ‘Thus, the opposition to the republican party as been made compact and will present a solid front in the coming political battle. The hard money democrats have evidently been led Into the coalition in the hope of capturing the electoral vote of the state. They are willing to Jet the greenbackers have all the nominations for state offices in exchange for the support o the latter for democratic electors. Represen- tative Ladd, of Maine, claims that a3 Blaine is not to be the republican candidate for President ‘the fusionists will carry the state by 10,000 majority. While the republicans by no means concede ‘an opposition victory they are con tcmplating a hard fight in the state. Outside of Maine, however, the greenback Presidentia, lcket will hardly receive any more considera. tion than that of the prohibitionists, and it may Ot receive as many votes. Protracted and tedious as its session Seemed, the Chicago convention did not sit as long as the democratic convention of 1960, held at Charleston. The latter body sat ten days, most of the time belng consumed in ing and sharp fights betweea the Douglas and anti-Douglas democrats. The Charleston convention decided to enforce the two-thirds rule, and after taking fifty-seven ballots it was agreed that the convention ad- Journ to meet in Baltimore on the 18th of June following. It reassembled tn Baltimore ac- cordingly and there the split in the party was Qnally made. The regular convention was in session six days, but took only two ballots, After the second ballot Douglas was declarea the nominee by acclamation. The seceders’ convention were in session but one day after withdrawing from the regular body, and {t in turn nominated Breckinridge by acclamation, ‘The rest our readers know and will remember. ———___._ H KJOTICE: NOTICE:: NOTICE:!: We opened this morning 4, 000'yards nLawns, xe re OE God me cents. ae 234 cents.
