It was quite severe on young Mr. Thompson. It ts likely, however, that the Texas plan, In- troduced in the vicinity of West Point by Mr. Buck, of that ardent and impetuous state, will have the effect to depress the hazing business a Uttle. In that view of the case, pistol-carrying may not be regarded as an unmixed evil. —$<_$_<$<$__~._____ ‘The exhibition of mill products and milling machinery, tnaugurated in Cincinnati last Week, has proved a decided succesa. Nearly five thousand millers and persons Interested In the manufacture of mill machinery attended Saturday, and an annual exhibition will be hereafter held at the different promiaent cities Of the Union. Among the exhibitors at Cincin- nat! are a number from Europe and from Canada, and It Is the intention to make the ex- Position hereafter international tn {ts charac- ter. Samples of flour were shown from differ- ent parts of the world, but none could excel in quality that made In the United States. A number of French physicians w who were called upoa by the government for their pro- fessional opinion of oleomargarin®, pronounced it unfit for use fn an tnsaneasylum, the Inmates of whichwere being regaledwith tt Instead of but- ter. On the other hand, there are oa record re- Ports of numerous chemists asserting that oleo- margarine is as good as butter, but it is quite ltkely they were paid to reader this optnion. The chiet objection hitherto urged against oleomar_ garine has been that it was being sold in the market as butter. To prevent this all the states In the Union have passed laws requiring that the substance shall be distinctly marked oleo- margarine, and making tt a penaity to sell it as anything else. Nevertheless the law is con- stantiy evaded. The stuff has been exported in large quantities from this country, but such opinions as that of the Frenca doctors will destroy the foreign demand for It. The St. Gothard tunel, which bas cost so much money as well as the sac: e of scores of lives, Is rendered useless for some time, at least, by the fall of a portion of the roof. This pre- sents a difficulty which the engineers have not yet been able tosurmount. It seems that the break occurred where the t was cut through a deposit of white stone, whlch is of a loose or brittle nature. A wall of granite feet thick was erected to support the roof, and yet the caving stone crushed it down. It fs doubtful if any wall can be constructed that ‘Will support the mass of soft white stone, and if a detour has to be made around it the cost of the tunnel will be greatly increased. It can hardly be doubted, however, but that the en- giteering skill of the age will flad some plan of remedying the difficulty, although it may take considerable time and mone: G‘4s ‘TO GAS STOVES: THE CELEBRATED ENGLISH STYLE.
