THE EVENING STAR. |719 near sax 719 WANTS. FOR RENT AND SALE. _| _ FOR RENT AND SALE. SUMMER RESORTS. SUMMER RESORTS. — WASHINGTON oF AENsatust fring soooiamendat WASHER and LTRON- 1B ee A es | L* DEOIT PARK. —_ USTED: STA’ é June’ 4, 1880. DS, PARASOLS, SUN UMBREL- ¢ 1310 ee aes in rare Tisihe avo., 86. 0 SSS = SS CROSBY 8. NOYES....Editor. than double that of any other daily paper Dudlished in Washington, and equal to that of all the other daily papers here added to- @cther. —— ‘THE Stax has a direct wire from its news room to the Western Union Telegraph office in New York eity, from which wires radiate to all parts of the @lobe, and is therefore enabled to secure the latest news by its own operator from every quarter up to within a few moments of going to press. It is the only evening paper south of Philadelphia which re. eives exclusively the Associated Press dispatches. Persons leaving town for the seaso: 4 Sam- mer travelers, can have Tue Stak mailed to them, postpaid, for fifty cents per month, the address being changed as often as desired. The money must accompany the order in all cases. A Second Edition of THE Stak will be issued at 6 o’clock this evening, containing all the news up to that hour. eg Whe Double Sheet To-morrow. ‘THE STax will be published as usual on Satur- day in eight page form of fifty-six columns. Advertisers and newsdealers will please send in thelr orders as early in the morning as possible for this popular issue. Thetr interest as well as Our convenience will be served by observing this reques Cincinmmati Next. Among the delegations already chosen to the Cincinnati convention those of Massachusetts, Mississipp! and South Carolina are for Bayard. ‘The anti-Tilden members of the Pennsylvania delegation, who are Inthe majority, are also for Bayard. This gives to the Delaware Sena- torastronger positive support than any man yet proposed for the nomination. Hancock ave dropped out of the race, and the er doesn’t appear to be spreading very rapidly. An active corps of canvasser3 has been sent out of late to do missionary work for Judge Feld, but this move cannot be said to have yet added anything to his boom. Tilden’. show up at every state comven- on, and are sald to a ‘Shave money and Spend it fteely, but they ayold every issue calculated to bring the name of their employ squarely before the democratic assemblages. It was claimed with great positiveness that Tilden would get an Instructed delegation trom Missouri; yet bis friends there dodged the issue, and of the thirty delegates chosen not more than half a dozen are avowedly for Tilden. ‘Thurman is still regarded as a probable candi- date by some of his friends. Hendricks ean Searcely be called a possibility. Though his friends in Indiana continue to urge his claims they know that he has no earthly chance of the nomination. The party cannot, with any pro- priety, reject Tilden and take up Hendricks, so the prevailing sentiment is to pass both of them by. In the event that a dark horse or compro- mise candidate has to be chosen, the sentiment of the party leaders here In Washington ap- Pears to be decidedly In favor of Senator Ran- doiph, of Ni ersey. Hes acceptable to all factions of the party, and would be a strong candidate in New York, New Jersey and Con- necticut, three states the democrats must rely upon for success, The names of Senator Mc- Donald, of Indiana, and of Representative Mor- rison, of Illinois, are both mentioned in con- nection with the nomination for Vice-President, with Randolph at the head of the ticket. Sen- ator Randolph, indeed, seems to be regarded as the most avallable man the anti-Tilden demo- €rats could unite upon in the event they are riven to concentrate upon a candidate in order to beat Tilden, and a good deal of work has been done In his behalf. In fact, it can be said ‘that there is a Randolph boom. —<re-___ ‘The cheese-paring economists in the House all belong to the democratic party, and their policy, as enforced in the 44th and 45th Con- Gresses, contributed more than any other one cause to the reduction of the democratic Majority in that body. Still these false econ- omists are too short-sighted to compretiend the true effect of their pieayune saving. They con- Unue to Insist upon cutting down the small- Salaried men in government employ. They want to reduce the pay of watchmen, laborers and hard-worked clerks, but they never offer to touch the big salaries, except to increase them. Men who get large pay usually have influence, and the smail economists in the House do not care to antagonize them. Not only that, but the very men who have been most prominent in reducing the salaries of government employés are, as @ rule, those who grab most for them- selves when they get a chance. If the demo- cratic majority permit this absurd notion of economy to be carried out af this session, they Will find that the men of small pay, whom they Strike at, have influence too, when It comes to a contest at the polls. This chipping off of sal- aries here and there doesn’t realty save the tax- payers anything, and they know it. ——$<_——. —___ A great many people will much enjoy the manner in which Senator Conkling has been Worsted in the preliminary skirmishing at the Chicago convention. And this, too, quite irre- spective of political predilections or presidential Preferences. In fact, so thoroughly is that gen- Ueman disliked for his egotism and offensive manners, both in and out of the Senate, that not a few persons quite friendly to General Grant would be perfectly willing to see him beaten simply because that result would be re- garded as the defeat and humiliation of Mr. Conkling. ————————— The farmers tn some portions of Maryland have already begun to harvest their wheat, and they report that the yield fs larger than last year. The heads are well-filled. In fact reports from all sections are to the effect that the wheat crop is in splendid condition, and the prospect 4 that the United States will be able to supply Europe with bread another year. —_—_§_~<o-__ It may interest a small portion, but still a por- tion, of communtty,—viz.: that section which do. serves hanging,—to know that the Kentucky hemp crop promises to be almost a fallure this year.
