On their ar- rival at Arlington the people distributed them- selves over the grassy hills, and satin groups chatting or making an early raid ou dinner bas- kets. Whole fataliies ¢3 ame. The grounds of the historical old place were in excellent order. The green of the healthy, well-kept sward makes a Very picturesque contrast with the red roads and footways that lead from the entrance up the hills to the old Custis mansion. There were flowers and decorations everywhere. The tomb of the two thousand unknown dead, on the left of the amphitheater, was surmounted by a ceaar column; Cedar branches extended from its sum- mit to each corner of the tomb and to posts erected at like distance therefrom. White and red flowers Were imbedded in the cedar. THR AMPITHEATER was co\ ered with canvass, and was much more ciety. decorated than ever before. Tats was owing to the fact that those in charge of the decorations, becoming apprehensive that the joint resolution in Congress, authorizing the Navy department to loan them flags, migut not be reached in tme, employed Mr. F.’Reh as decorator, who arranged his own flags. The resolution having been approved, the lerge supply of national and other ila, fiom’ the navy-yard were also La; Fach of the posts which upheld the at tr mework bore a victor’s shield.
