al THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON. THURSDAY jay 20, 1850. CROSBY 8S, NOYES....Editor. na ea fhe Evening Stor has a regular, perma~ ment, bena fide daily circulation more than double that of any other daily paper oubdlished in Washington, and equal to tha of all the other daily papers here added to- @etner. Tux Star is connected with the wires of the Na- ional Telephone Exchange and with the Western Union Telephone Exchange. Both these agencies ean therefore be availed of in sending to Tae STAR advertisements, orders for the paper to be served, ews, or any information, at any hour of the day free of charwe. These facilities are a creat conve- mience, and will be appreciated by the customers of ‘Tue Star. The Double Sheet Saturday THE STAR Will be published as usual on Satur- Gay in eight page form of fifty-six columns. Advertisers and newsdealers will please send in their orders as early as practicable for this enlarged and extra edition. The number of new advertisements printed last Saturday was %- The number thus far printed in May is 1,355 ————~<+e —__ Residents of Washington know all about it but strangers in the city, who compared the Clear and ful} account of the boat race In last night's extra Stak with the so-called reports of it in the other extra sheets put in circulation on the streets, were able to see the results of well- planned, intelligent and effective enterprise, contrasted with the crude and spasmodic ef- forts in that direction sometimes made tn other quarters. By common verdict, that of Tae Stak was pronounced the only complete and In- telligible account of the affair published last evening, and this verdict was emphasized and made manifest by the enormous numbers of ex- tra Stars soid. The demand for it continued, Indeed, until late In the night, and long after the editton was exhausted. ——e led boat-race between Hanlan on the Potomac yesterday every In and Cour requisite was present but the race itself. The day was simply perfect, the course was admira- bie, the water was in unexceptionable condi- tlon, the spirit of falr-play and enthusiasm was manifest everywhere, and such a crowd of spectators was present as never before assem- bled on such an Occasion in America. All that Was lacking was a pair of strong-nerved willing oarsmen on the river. For want of these, what ought to have been a historical contest turned out tobe a contemptible and disreputable jitseo, Just why Courtney pursued the course he did Wil) probably never be known to the public. Nor does i matter much now. He may have been Sick, as 1s claimed, and he may have taken his part from choice. His friends, who insist that he lacks neither strength, skill, nor endurance, explain his failure yesterday by saying that in a crisis he is subject to nervous prostrations which almost tnvariably unfit him fora contest, and sometimes send him to bed. This ts a charitable view, and it 1s, perhaps, well enough to accept it. But all the same the fact remains tbat when he is weighed tn the balance he is found wanting. He may have been fit to row yesterday, and he may not have been. When he came upon the course, however, he must have known that he either could not or would not row. In either case, it was a duty he owed hot less to the public than to himselt to stand Out of the way and let Riley take his place in the race, in order that the vast throng which had come together to witness a trial of skill and Strength should not turn its face homeward in disappointment and disgust. That he did not bh. He should withdraw him- few, at once and forever. He is no longer an object of intrest. But leaving Courtney out of view altogether, and assuming that the affair was conducted “on the square” throughout, the public still has a good deal to complain of. To postpone the Face for an hour, at too late a period in the day for sufficient public rotice of the fact, and after perhaps fifty thousand persons had taken their Places, on the theory that two brawny athletes could not endure for forty minutes the heat to which the immense crowd of men women and children had been subjected for three or four hours, was a piece of impertinence to begin With, and whea the spiritiess affair came toa Conclusion without any contest dt all, it was simply adding Insult to injury. Washington will be glad to furnish at all times a field for honorable, legitimate and fairly conducted con tests of any kind, but she wants no more meet- ings like that of yesterday. — Of the state conventions which assembled yesterday, that of Ilinois attracted the largest share of public attention, because of the influ- ence its action must have upon the Grant movement. The General's friends themsel\cs realized that anything short of a positive declara- ton in his favor by his own state would sum- martly retire him¢rom the contest. Therefore have they bent every energy to the task of Securing definite and unequivocal instruction; in favor of their candidate. The heated and bitter contest over the admission of the Cook county delegation is the key to the whole situation. and the line of battle between the Grant and anti- Grant forces in the convention fs distinctly drawn upon this issue. In the preliminary Struggle the Grant men won a decided victory, and there is every reason to believe they will follow it up to-day by carrying their every potnt. If they get any proportion of the Cook county delegation it assures their control of the state convention, whereas the admission of the entire anti-Grant delegation from Cook county would neutralize the sirength of the Grant element from the remainder of the state and end in a virtual and perhaps positive defeat of Grant instructions. Tiis situation gave the Grant forces an advantage they were quick to use. They contented themselves with the moderate request for a proportionate repre- Sentation only from Cook county, while their Opponents have been forced to demand the entire delegation for themselves or give up the fight imadvance. In bitter factional fMzhts of this character conventions usually enteavor to ayold a rupture or a bolt by dividiag the repre- sentation, and as the Grant men were In a Position where half a loaf was, in effect, as much fo them as a whole one, they have asked oply for this. The Minnesota resubitcan convention tn- Structed for Senator Windom as a presidential Candidate who would “harmonize ail factions and sections of the country.” This was really @ set-back for Senator Blaine, who, with Win- dom out of the way, would most likely have been declared the favorite of the convention. It 4s alleged that the Windom movement was Inau- gurated more for the purpose of defeating Blaine in Minnesota than anything else, and there is some plausibility in the allegation. The indica- tions are, however, that Biaine is the second choice of a majority of the delegation; but for Grant to obtain even a minority of the votes of ‘that state would be a political gain for htm and ‘& corresponding loss to the Blaine calculauions, ‘The effect of the action of the conventiva ts to leave the state of Minnesota In doabi, at least, in the great struggle that now bids fatr to take place at Chicago for the nomination upon the dirst ballot, The Virginia democrats, or conservatives, as ‘they please to call themselves, seem to have achieved mere in the way of harmonizing the two wings of their party than their Opponents had believed possible. Tue state convention at Richmond yesterday was quiet and orderly in its proceedings, and selected an uninstructed delegation. Among the names of the delegates to Cincmnati ‘are jseveral who were prominently identified With the readjusting movement, and thelr ac. Ceptance of the position seems to make it certain ‘tbat at least “a portion of Gen. Mahone’s fol. Icwers will return to their old political assoct- ations, In California the democrats, though not a> yarently having any contested questions be- fore them, adjourned over until to-day, with a strepg Thurman sentiment apparent in the convention. The democrats captured the workingmen’s convention ta California, whereat the greenback men became disgusted and set up a party for themselves, H4A™45 WINS THE BOAT BACE, 80 HAS THE GREAT BOSTON SHOE AUCTION HOUSE WON IT'S RACE IN SELLING BEST QUALITY OF SHOES AT BOTTOM PRICES OVER ALL SHOE STORES THIS S1DE OF BOSTON.
