Bit wae Xd MAC BOAT RACE THE EVENING STAR. __ | Pores purines cad rece vunbarat at the WASHINGTON. great ok Liat Bee —— HANLAN AND COURTNEY RACE, CROSBY 8. NOYES....Editor. a——— She Evening Star has a regular, perma- ment, bona fide datly circulation more than dowble that of any other daily paper gublished in Washington, and equal totha of all the other daily papers here added to- gether. TSSSS ‘THE STAR has a direct wire from its news room to the Western Union Telegraph office in New York eity, from which wires radiate to all parts of the globe, and is therefore enabled to secure the latest ews by its own operator from every quarter up to ‘within a few moments of going to press. It is the only evening paper south of Philadelphia which re- Ceives exclusively the Associated Press dispatches. Both in the interest of fair play, asa principle and for the reputation of the national capital as a neutral meeting ground for contests of every kind, tt 1s to be hoped that all the suggestions and reque of Referee Blatkle 1@ regard to the coming boat race, as printed in yesterday's and to-day’s Stak, may be carefully observed and Strictly conformed to, alike by visitorsto and Tesidents of the city, and especially by the latter. From all the circumstances entering Anto the situation, Washington affords the best and It may be said the only natural fleld In this country for national or international contests, €ither on land or on water. She has not alone One of the best mile race tracks in the country, whether for trotting or running horses, but also the best rowing course, with the almost positive Certainty of smooth water and fair weather at ‘@ny season of the year. Then, too, the cosmopolitan character of her population insures absolnte justice and fair play Yo all contestants, come from what quar- ter they may. Made up as it Is from cit zens Of all parts of the country, and indeed of all countries, the local feelings and prejudices Which manifest themselves so conspicuously and unpleasantiy at most other pl: on such Occasions do not exist here at all. The broad and tolerant spirit which eomes from Inter- Course with all interests and all peoples is ob- Servable here in every rank of society and in every phase of life. Furthermore, it manifests Itself mest strongly tn times of exciting Interest, When the people of most other places are carried away by trenzies of feeling and passion. It therefore only needs that the people of Wash- ington shall do themselves simple justice on this occasion, by the display of their usual every-Gay characteristics, to insure the recog- nition of their city, by common consent, as the natural and best meeting place in the country for national or international contests of what- w @ reasonable prospect that there will within a yearor two be a new connected line of railway between Washington and New York. Although there are two routes out of ‘Washington now for New York, they are joined, ‘8s is well known, north of Baltimore. Col Mc- Comb, an experfenced and energetic railway builder, proposes to build a new road from Phil- Adelphia to Baltimore. Coming this way, it ‘Will probably run fro Philadelphia to Swarth- more, on the West Chester and Philadelphia Tallroad; then to Chester and Wilmington, on a track to be built; then on the Wilmington and ‘Western ratiroad to Greenbank; then by a new Hine via Newark to Deer creek, where the Sus- Quehanna river will be crossed, to Baltimore, nearly parallel with the Philadelphia, Wilming- ton and Baltimore railroad. The new road re- quired to be built will be about 0 miles, and ‘Col McComb announces his intention of putting it through as soon as possible. The whole line ‘Will be the same length as the old road. From Philadelphia trains will run to New York over the Bound Book road, and from here to Balti- more over the Baltimore and Ohio line. A faint ripple is made on the current of pub- lie optnion by the contents of a letter yesterday Sent tothe House committee on Pacific rail- Ways, charging that certain members of the Senate were corrupted by the use of money etc., Paid by the lobby in behalf of the Texas Pacific Fallway, along in the years 1S70 and 1S71, withan Offer to furnish documentary proot and wit ‘esses, if Congress is disposed to investigate the Matter. If the reformers tn or out of Congress Gesire to enter upon the work of purification it is not necessary togo back nine or ten years in pursult of a fleld to operate in. Lobbies as powerful, insolent and dangerous, as any that have ever disgraced the halls and committee Yooms of the Capitol have been at work all the Present session, and their brazen-faced agents and co-betweens, both male and female, can be seen thereabouts at any time. It will be very €asy to find a fresh trail. The statistics show a steady and healthy Increase in the export trade of the United States. Last month the exports of breadstuffs ‘Were 33 per cent. greater than in April, 1879, and during the ten months ending with April there Was an increase of 25 per cent. over the cor- Fesponding period of last year. The total ex- ports of grain and breadstuffs during last April were valued at 0,000. The Baltimore Sun yesterday entered upon Ws forty-fourth year. Like all journals of its Class, the Sum has grown with the growth and strengthened with the strength of the city in Which it ts published. Always enterprising, prosperous and profitable, it ts doing to-day, as its columns abundantly testify, better work and a more productive business than ever be- fore. The Sun is a thoroughly good, reliable Lewspaper, and 1s, of course, successful. — Hon. W. E. Forster, the newly-appointed Trish secretary, has already displeased the home rulers, and they announce thetr intention of Jomming the opposition in Parliament and of Te1ewing the policy of obstruction.
