THE EVENING STAR. _ | ‘T=! cons rom aor weatues. | ym. snvsren DOUBLE SHEET. phe EOL SATURDAY y S, 1880. CROSBY 8. NOYES....Editor. ‘THE STAR is connected with the wires of the Na- onal Telephone Exchange and with the Western Union Telephone Exchange. Both these agencies ean therefore be availed of in sending to Tax Stam @dvertisements, orders for the paper to be served, news, or any information, st any hour of the day free of charwe. These facilities are a great conve- ‘aience, and will be appreciated by the customers of Tae Stan. ‘The Incom = Tide. Since the first of January 51,114 immigrants bave ariived In this country, and asthe number of arrivals steadily Increases with each month it Is estimated that during this year our popu- lation will be fucreased by 490,000 foreigners. They come chiefly from Germany, Great Brit- ain, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Holland. ‘The greater proportion of the arrivals are from Germany, where the despotic sway of Bismarck has created widespread dissatisfaction. The famine in Ireland fs driving thousands to Amer- jea. There 1s one feature of the present immit- €ration which seems to have struck all who have examined the tncoming tide of new citizens. That 1s that the immigrants are generally from the beiter classes of the European peasantry, and that large numbers of them come provided with means to purchase homes in this country. But @ small proportion of the new-comers stop at the ports of urrival. Asa rule they startimme- lately for the great west, with the intention ot cultivating the soil or engaging m mining. For some time past the money-changers at Castle Garden, New York, have exchanged, for newly- arrived immigants, upon an average, $159,000 Perday. Besides this very many of them are Provided, before leaving Europe, with drafts upon commercial firms in this country. On Some days the average amount of money ascer- tained to be brought by each immigrant was as much as $500, and it is reasonable to suppose that those coming in at other ports are equally a8 well off. Within afew years this immense Influx of forelgners must wield a nowt influence over the politics of the count Very naturally, men who buy property will Sire to become cit'zens, and will avail them- Selves of that great privilege at the earliest opportupity. The west wall reap the advan- tage of this addition to our citizenship. The only southern state m which any of the immi- srants have yet seitled ts Texas, but the sta- xisties being prepared for the next census to demonstrate that cotton can be raised ad- Wantageously by white labor may turn a por- ton of the tide of Immigraiton In that direction. it is a fact worthy of notice and comment that one of the immigrants are from republican France. The subjects of Germany, the victori- ous power in the Franco-German war, are seek- ing better homes and greater }iberty in the nev World by the tens of thousands, while the de- feated French are content to remain at home, —_———_ +2 The Tilden victory in the recent primary elections in Hamilton county, Ohio, indicate ‘hat the wily politician of Gramercy Park ap- Preciates the importance of having the local Sentiment of Cincinnati in his favor. In 1 more than a month before the meeting of the St. Louis convention, triends of Tilden began to Work up the local feeling for him. The Politicat clubs which had organized fora recent city election were revived, furnished with bight new uniforms, drums and Tilden banners. Til- den meetings were held where Speeches in his behalf were delivered, and, usually, upon ad- | Journment the entire asse mblaze was invited to some place of refreshment to drink cham- pagne. Money was expended freely. The friends of other candidates protested ago'nst this sort of work, but it went on, and when the various delegations began to assemble in the city the Tildenites were prepared to impress them with the popularity of their candidate. Processions, formed of the numerous clubs and carrylog torches and tluminated banners, all for “Til den and Reform,” paraded the elty every night, and the various hotels were surrounded by Ti den howlers. All the fuss and parade was for ‘Tilden, and it was the means of making many a delegate believe that the “New York reform- er” was the choice of everybody for the nomina- Uon. The local politicians of Cincinnatt are already beginning to howl vociferously for Til- cen, and it is plain that he Lotends to repeat the game of 1576. ++ -__ The discovery that the late Ohio democratic Convention was really organized and conducted th the interest of Tilden, but that all the strat egy was concealed under an ostensible Thur man boom, seems to have been made only by the Opponents of the cep'or Sen tor from Ohio. His friends, among them Ohio members of Congress, Profess to be entirely satisfied with the action of the convention and with the delegation chosen. The theory that Thurman ts to be Sacrificed for Tilden, necessarily tmplies that the officers of the convention and the delega- tion to Cincinnati are nothing ‘more than politi- cal tricksters, and Mr. Thurman's iriends say (hey are among the most honorable men in the party. One rule of the present political canvass in both parties seems to be to claim everything. From every state convention the most conflict. ing reports have been received, much to the be- wilderment of the public. In the republican party the Claims of tha Grant and anti-Grant factions, respectively, confuse all calculations, and in. the democratic party the Tilden and anti-Tilden men go equally as far tn claiming everything in sight. Only the national conven- ons Can settle these claims. The design for a monument in honor of Gales and Seaton, that accompanies a communication tous urging the erection of that monument, seems to have merit In the way of good taste and appropriateness. That a monument to Gales and Seaton should be erected in Wasbing- ton, there can be no question. In the mean- time the movement to erect a monument over the grave of Mr. Seaton should be made effece tive. The proposition to raise tuds for this monument by the public schools fs a proper one, for Mr. Seaton was a staunch friend of our pub- lic school system Im {ts infancy, and when it beeded friends, but no doubt our citizens gen- erally would be glad to aid in the work. The action of the republican convention of Maryland presents a tougher probiem than the fitteen puzzle. The convention passed a reso- jution instructing for Blaine by a vote of S9 to 14, and yet the Grant men claim the delegation to Chicago: The Heathen Chinee seems to have been on hand at Frederick. ee —— The Grant men are disposed to treat the anti- Ubird term meeting at St. Louis with levity. It certainly falled to come up tothe sounding manifesto. The trouble with the scratchers {3 that they don’t like anything like robust hard Work. They will fuss and grumble in a Miss Nancyfsh sort of away at home, but they are much too nice and tender-footed to take an ac- ve part In the rough work of politics, etther at the primaries or the polls. The men who strike for Grant are not of that sort. ees inthe The French republle ts an assured success. ‘The people of France are happy and Prosperous ‘The government ts In accord with the people, #8 is evidenced by the fact that the taxes are being collected without any difficulty or delay, ‘The finances are in excellent condition, and the surplus in the treasury 1s accumulating to such ab extent that a reduction of taxation will be made ere long. The peasants and laboring Classes are sharing in and enjoying the general prosperity, and it is scarcely probable that another empire could be established la France even by a coup -+ ee —____ Opposition to the despotic measures of Bis- marck’s policy is rapidly growing tn strength in the German Reichstag, and the chances are that the Prince will be called to bait before a Great while longer. Hostility to Bismarck’s domestic policy 1s being developed with so much show of determination to carry out all his wishes. ——<_—-______ ‘There are 126 new advertisements in Tax ‘Stag to-day, exceeding seven columns, equal to more than one entire page of the paper. ALFRED TOWNSEN THIRD EDITION IN SIX WEEKS. WITH PORTRAIT OF THE GREATEST LIVING POLITICAL AND DESCRIPTIVE JOURNALIST “GATH.” “*Mr. Townsend has here collected the literary plant upon which his reputation for something other than a popular and brilltent newspaper correspon- dent will rest. I ssubject’s net any wore to his advantage than bis treatment of ithas been to hig, cred.t in refinement and simplicity. Whittivr. “Tread it more than half through the first even- ing, picking out the plums, such as ‘‘The Big Idiot," and creatly enjoyed the entertainmen Mark Twain. “*If the book is an oyster shell, it is one, lam sure, that has pearls in it. I have already found two—Herman of Bohemia Manor,’ and ‘Oid St. —Henry W. Lougfellow. “*T have read three of the tales—a larie slice for me—and find them entertaining and altogether Gath-like. John Hay. “The Beau Hickman story is good enough for Bret Harte or anybody else."—Hiimuad cs Stet man. “The versatility of his pen has long been my ad- miration; the pieces in this bovk are charming; not only true poetry, but wonderfully accurate paintings of the romantic land of the Chesapeake.” —Olive Logan. “Graphic, strong and trus. It isalsoa new vein of life: very peculiar, very interesting, and now past, never to return.”—James Parton. “What excellent, fresh material!"— 1. D. Hewel “If the population of the Chesapeake had the cordial appreciation of literary thiugs possessed by the people of the Hudson, these tales would be- come as classical with them as ‘Rip Van Winkle’ and ‘ Wolfert’s Roost.” Their fancy and imavina tion are unequalled since Hawthorne and Hans An- dersen."—St. Louis Globe- Democrat. “‘Mr. Townsend has rare command of the pa- thetic, but he is never mawkish, never sentimental, ever effeminate. His most tender pathos is re- lieved by fine touches of humor, and his humor is always zenuite and virile, the racy product of a rich, native soil, without a trace of affectation or spasmodic American drollery."— Nem York Tribune.
