Lieut.'F. V. Green has notitied the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad Company to lower their tracks to the new grade between South Capitol and 41 streets east. Under the appropriation no: nearly expended, 55,000 cuble yards of filling have been deposited in this foul ditch, filling It a distance of 700 feet below the old brick bridge, Which has been removed and the bricks sived for the use of the District. The above-described filling, with what the railroad company will put in, will complete the filling of this ditch to the K street bridge, or the bend of the cinal, leav- ing 1,500 ramping feet to the mouth of the canal yet to be filled. The estimated cost for finishing this work, made by Lieut. Green, is $30,000 for the filling and $15.00) for the necessary sewerage. Of the $20,000 appropriation nearly expended about $3,000 was used for running a two ring 31 inside diameter brick barrel sewer from the old bridge at New Jersey avenue down on a line of bank a distance of 550 feet. ‘The sewerage has to be carried along with the filling, as all the surface drainage of this section of the city rans off tnto this sewer, which will necessarily have to be increased in capacity as the work goes on. ‘The amount of work executed under the recent appropriation is far beyond what was antici- pated, and the result has been so successful that another appropriation sufictent to finish up the job is expected to be made the present Session.
