THE EVENING STAR. WASHIN Peds MONDAY = 26, 1880, *~cnosBY S. NOYES... Editor. fhe \e Evening Siar has a regular, perma- ment, bona fide daily circulation more than double that of any other daily paper published in Washington, and equal tothat Of all the other daily payers here added to- oetner. Some Interesting facts are given in the Charleston papers in regard to the improved cultivation of cotton upon the famous sea islands of South Carolina. Before the war, under the slave system, the average yleld of these Islands was from 5) to 1% pounds per acre, Since the war the large plantations have been Givided up so that Instead of 400 or 500 acres, as. formerly, the average size now is from 59 to 60 acres. Fertilizers are used very extensively, and the planters direct thetr attention to im- proved cultivation, instead of, as before the war, trying to cover a large acreage of ground. Under this new system and with free labor the average production per acre has been increased from S0 to 250 pounds, and some of the planters last year realized a net profit of $100 per acre. This, too, after expending from 360 to $30 per acre for fertilizers. One of the islands, under the improved system of cultivation, was made to produce last year 566 pounds ot cotton to the acre. This sea Island cotton commands an average price of 49 cents per pound, and the planters, both white and colored, who raise it are growing ricb. This comparison shows how far superior the new south with free labor can be made to the old south with slave labor, re —___ The impression that Tilden will not be a can- didate before the Cincinnati convention has be- Come quite general of late, and the statement to this effect by THe Stak’s New York correspon- dent, who evidenced his familiarity with Til- den’s plans by foretelling what he would do at the Syracuse convention, has contributed large- Ty to this feeling. No doubt Tilden intends to hold all his political forces together, if he can, with the view of helping some friend to the nomina- tion at Cincinnati. The Pennsylvania conven- tion, which meets next Wednesday, will deter- maine, to alarge extent, the amount of infiu- ence Tilden will have at Cincinnati. If his fiends can control the Peni ania delega tion he will still be a power in the party; but , a8 LOW seems probable, Senator Wallac ucceeds in dominating the convention, the feet will be to so weaken the Tidlen intluence that it will not count for much. ——_—__—_—_—_--_____ All the Indications are th: he vote of Hi- nots will decide who shall be the republican nominee for the presidency, and the contest for delegates in that state is therefore watched with interest by the politic! all over the ns country. The situation In IMnols ts just now favorable for Blaine. The Blaine men have elected seventy-two delegates to the state con- vention against forty tor Grant; but only seven- teen of the one hundred and one counties have So far elected, and the Grant men claim that their strongholds have not yet been heard from. Most of the counties in which Senator Logan’s gfluence ts supposed to be potential have yet to Vote, and he sconts the idea that Grant will be defeated in his own state. Should Iilnols go “agin him,” it ts needless to say that Grant will be nowhere as a candidate for the nomination at Chicago. —_-+-___ Senator Thurman's speech, delivered at Col- umbus, Ohio, Saturday evening, is being spoken Of as sounding the key note of the presidential canvass forthe democrats in the event that Grant is nominated by the republicans. While Mr. Thurman was not authorized by his party to lay down the principle upon which {t will conduct the campaign, his intimate acquatnt- ‘ance with all the leaders and thorough knowl- @dge of their views enables him to speak with authority. He is the recognized leader of his party in Congress and 1s consulted in regard to every measure of party management. The de- mand of republicans—especially the third- termers—for a “stronger government,” was the text from which Senator Thurman's political Sermon was preached and it will form the basts Of the democratic campaign, perhaps, whether Gen. Grant be the republican nominee or not. The argument, however, would not be ot much force against any other candidate than Gen. Grant. Cadet Andrus, who, in his testimony before the Whittaker investigation at West Point avowed his prejudice against the colored cade and sald he objected to the latter “falling in” along side of him, is from Indiana, and his father Is a minister of the gospel and a pro- nounced republican. Andrus’ testimony led a number of journals to concinde that he was from the south, aud the Chicago Tribune, upon this assumption, based another, to the effect that the white cadet’s father was a plantation over- Seer before the war and a rebel soldier during the war. Tius illustrates the unfairness of as- suming that prejudice against the colored race Only exists in the south. —-o+e-___ The Grant boom hasa lift In Virginia and a Set back in Maryland. The primaries held in a number of counties in Maryland on Saturday resulted, the Baltimore American says, in a Victory for the antl-Grant sentiment in that State. John Kelly ts applying the same bulldozing tactics to the national democ to deteat TH- den that he used in the New York canvass last year against Robinson. In a speech at Tam- Many hall the other night he declared that if Tilden is nominated at Cincinnatl, Tammany will oppose him at the polls. Ke against Robinson contributed more to his nom- ination than anything else, and he ‘s more Ukely to help Tilden than to hurt him by the course he ts pursuing. Tammany does not Stand too well in democratic estimation, and it’s bolt of last year has not endeared it to the Party. It’s opposition to Tilden and bitter per- Sonal warfare agains, him tn 1576, aided rather ‘tran injured bim, but Kelly does not seem to learn any wisdom — experience. The sweeptp sunday law adopted | recently by the Kentucky lesislature went tnto effect yesterday, and so stringent are its provisions isville poitce in enforcing tt stopped all work at the newspapers offices, closed all the Saloons, sent all public hacks to the stables, and reported for indictment the sexton and Organist at one of the churches on the ground ‘that they viviated the statute which says that all persons who receive pay for services of any Kind on Sunday siali be punished. It ts deemed rather odd that Ke tucky should have passed a Sunday jaw that is x. nost more severe than the much denounced blue laws of the New England puritans. Commissioner Walker in laying out the ground for an exceptonally complete census enumeration in all its varied branches has very Judiciously assigned to Clarence King the work of collecting statistics concerning precious me- tals in this country for incorporation 1n the next census. Mr. King is making preparations fora thorough and reliable exhibit.
