THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON. ‘TUESDAY.. .- April 29, LSS0. CROSBY 8. NOYES....Editor. fhe Evening Star has a regular, perma- ment, tena fide daily circulation more than double that of any other daily paper @ublished in Washington, and equal tothat Of all the other daily papers here added to- gether. 0 Se ‘The Candidates at Cincinnati. ‘The democratic party ts so engaged with Til- den at present that it has very little time to discuss Its other candidates for the presidential nominution, and therefore it 1s dificult to esti- mate how much of a boom the several aspirants have behind them. Until recently it was gene- rally conceded that Tilden had a stronger back- ipg than any man in his party for tae nomina- ton, but the last few weeks have developed the fact that he is unacceptable to a large element Of his party, and this hasoperated against him. Nothing has weakened Tilden so much as the evidences of intense hostility to him tn the southern states. Practical democrats admit that their party cannot hope toelect a President except with the ald of the solid south. Since this southern opposition to Tilden has been manifested a few of his friends have advised Bim to push on his fight for the nomt- nation In spite of the south; to let that section oppose him and that very opposition would bring to his support sufficient northern states to make up the loss. Thisis an impractically absurd view of the subject, and has only been urged by certain men who could command a great deal with Tilden as President. Their sel- fishness blinded their judgment. Democratic leaders who have the good of their party unsel- fishly at heart can generally be found now among the opponents of Tilden. Even ex-Sen- ator Barnum, who upon the termination of the Presidential struggle In 1376 began to work ear- nestly for a renomination of the old tteket, has admitted that Tilden could not be elected and must not be nominated. Ex-Congressman Hewitt is also now classed among those who believe that Tilden means defeat, and, while it isa matter of absolute impossibility to fore- tell what a political convention will do, tt must be admitted that the present indications all Point to the d it of Tilden for the nomination at Cincinnati, even should he continue his ef- forts up to the meeting of the convention. After Tilden, who {3 most likely to get the nomination? That {3 an interest- ing question, and though {t cannot be answered positively, the probabilities can be arrived at. Of the candidates in the field the Indications are that Senator Bayard will have a larger support than any other. He will have some of the southern delegations solid, and any sort of favorable movement towards him in the convention would readily bring the entire south to his support. He has strong friends in New York, Pennsylvania and all the New England states, and will get votes from all those states whenever the breaking up or departure from the unit rules shall commence. Many of the ablest and most influential leaders ofthe south are openly urging him. With but twoor three exceptions the southern Senators favor him, andthe fact that he would be an ac- ceptable and a strong candidate in New York will work to his advanta Next to Bayard, Hendricks will probably have a larger number of votes than any other candidate, and on the first ballot he will, perhaps, have even more than Bayard. Hendricks will have Indiana Soild and unswerving. He will get a part of the Tennessee delegation probably, and some votes from western and a few possibly from eastern States, His main element of strength will be the determined support his own state will give him. Hancock will, in all probability, have Pennsylvania and Louisiana, with some votes from other states. Thurman will have Ohio, and perhaps West Virginia. In considering the possibilities at Cincinnatl, however, from the basis of present appearances, €x-Governor Seymour, of New York, must not De omitted. There fs a feeling, almost a convic- tion, pervading the national democracy to-day that he is the strongest man that could be named for President; that he could heal the dit- ferences tn New York and carry the state, and if he consents to accept the nomination, it is More than probable that it will be tendered to him unanimously. Even if Seymour fails to publicly announce that he will not accept the nomination, the chances are that the conven- ok will construe his silence into a willingness to serve his party, and make him the candidate. Should he positively refuse to run, then Mr. Bayard’s friends will push bis name and with hopes of success, for much of the Seymour sen- tment would take Bayard as second choice. The New York convention, in session at Syra- cuse, will determine the question as to whether or not Tilden means to continue hits tight for the nomination. Should the convention choose a Tilden delegation to Cincinnati, then the process Of “killing off Tilden” must go on in the other states. Edison’s Lam The latest test of Mr. electric lamp has been made gentlemen of standing, Profs. Rowland and Barker. This test was in the way of making a measurement of the actual performance of the lamp. The result would appear to show that the Edison light costs almost as much as ga even for material used, without taking into ac- count the larger cost required for the compl machinery, skilled labor, and other specis! ton- ditions of electric illumination. Tb2 professors found, however, that tf a maze powerful cur- Tent was used with the same lamps, a much more economical restic could be obtained, but gm this case another dimiculty occurred, namely, the carbon flament would not endure this pow- erful current without speedy destruction. The conclusion reached by the sclentitic experts is that “provided the lamp can be made either cheap enough or dur- able enough.” there is no reasonable doubt Of the practical success of the light, but that the lamp as {t now exists cannot be pronounced Practicable, but requires much further experi- ment before such a result can be truly asserted. ‘They add as a salve to this unpleasant verdict: “That Mr. m will finally overcome the dificulty, however, no one who knows him can doubt.” In the opinion of the Sinitary Engi- eer, a thoughtful and dispassionate sctentifle Journal, the unlimited confidence expressed in the paragraph quoted will hardly be shared by those whose memories retain note of the many things which Mr. Edison has undertaken and abandoned. Altozether the prosp: ct of a cheap and satisfactory {li inating power to take the place of gas seems t) be unpleasantly remote. —————~--___ What cowardice cos's a community ts well Illustrated in the experience of San Francisco With Dennis Kearn Through the exercise of a little pluck he ts now at last in a feion’s garb behind the bars of a prison, where he ought to have been long ago, and where he would have ‘been had the people and authorities of that city Deen true to themselves. There wa3 just as much ground for his arrest and tmprisonment at the beginning of his mischievous course as at any Ume since, had the people been half as Vigorous in asserting and maintaining their Tights and interests as he was audacious and active In destroying them. But between a craven fear on the one hand, and an unaccount- ble apathy on the other, he was permitted to pursue his destructive career virtually un- checked, until he had inflicted an tnjury upon the city and state to an extent almost beyond calculation. It will take years and years to repair the damage which a Ittle courage, backed up by a strong will, would have pre- “ented in the outset. —~<+e ___ ‘The Philadelphia Tivws says the two-thirds Tule was invented by the democrats to defeat ‘Van Buren in 144 This is a mistake. The two- ‘hhirds rule was ‘tnvented” in 1832 by the first Rational democratic convention, and when the body was practically unanimous as to thecholce ‘of a candidate. It is true that its enforcement caused the defeat of Van Buren tn 1S44, but as it thad been observed by each preceding conven- on, many of the friends of Van Burea deemed 4t unwise to make him the candidate at the expense of its abrogation. —————+~-—___ Parson Talmage says “if a man has common Sense he can get along as well in Mobile as in Preoklyn.” Such as Talmage, we suppose, get sors best in Brooklyn, Js FOREPAUGH have the greatest curiosity of animals, but the great Pibpoichltad SHOE AUCTION HOUSE the sreatest curiosity of BOOTS and, SHOE ES, and 9 still greater curiosity of Prices than any Shoe 8!
