— SS SS THE EVENING STAR. CROSBY S. NOYES... Editor. ISS ANNIE HK. HUMPHERY, 430 10rn STREET NORTHWEST, Has a ONE DOLLAR CORSET, (her own manufacture, ) Perfect in fit, that cannot be surpassed forthe prica by any in market. It £he Evening Star has a regular, perma- ment, bona fide daily circulation more than double that of any other daily paper Dublished in Washington, and equal tothat Of all the other daily papers here added to- gether. ‘There ts one consideration in connection with carrying on the construction of the new depart- Ment pbuilding in this city, which should be carefully weighed by Congress before tt decides to postpone or delay the work of completing it. ‘To the country ft is of vastly more importance than the throwing of men out of work or the mere saving of the money now paid out annu- ally for rents, although these are elements in the cage which should by no means be overlooked. We refer to the urgent necessity for providing at the earliest day possible of fire proof offices for the safe keeping of the government records, ete. Many of the buildings now occupied for public offices are mere tinder boxes, which a touch of a match would sweep from the face of the earth in an Instant, with all thelr valuable contents. Many of these important archtyes it would be impossible to replace at any expense Of time. trouble and money, So that the loss oc- castoned by a single tre of this sort would far more than offset the whole sum required to carry the buflding in question to early comple- tton. ‘There fs still another feature that should not be lost sight of, That Is the economy of push- Ing foward the work with all the rapidity poss- Ibie while the prices of labor and jal are comparatively low. There ts now every proba- bility that both wages and material will be con- siderably higher a year hence than they are nov ‘The saving in these ttems alone will therefore amount to a very considerable sum. Add the Saving here to the expense and loss which always auend the interruption of eny extensive work, pubite or private, and the total flgure will be found to be quite a large one. But the need Of fire proof reeeptacles for every kind of pubite records outweizhs all other considerations, and nothing should be allowed to interfere with this consummation re If it fs true, as 1s 89 frequently reported, that ‘Tilden means not to nominate himself, but to control the nomination of his party at Clncin- nati, it 1s pretty safe to predict that he will succeed. It is apparent now that the two- thirds rule will be maintained, but that will rather afd (han prevent an exercise of Tilden’s power. The bitter opposition to him in nis Party cannot prevent his securing a falr pro- Portion of the delegations. He will, 20 doubt have the York delegation solld, also the ‘tts, lowa and Michigan de ations, delegates from other states sut- fictent to give him at least more than one-third of the convention. Tilden ts one of the ablest poiftical organizers in the country, and his forces at Cincinnati will be compact and held Well in hand. Then, with the assumption that he will have even barely more than athird of the delegates no nomination can be made without his consent, unless some of his friends desert him. As the journal that is known to be most friendly to Tilden—the New York S»—once remarked, he {s but human and is moved by the same motives and passions that usually govern men and politictans Several of the aspirants for the democratic nomination have not used Mr. Tilden at ali times as he thought he ought to be treated, and ft 1s an open secret that he feels resentful about tt. He has, probably, marked these ambitious gentlemen for slaugh- ter. Besides, he has, since the judgment of the electoral commission was rendered, expressed his condemnation of that measure, and on more than one occasion he has sald that the demo- rats who served on the commission did not ac- cord to him the constderation he was entitled to. His desire to pay off these scores before he @naily retires from the political field may be the motive that Is prompting him to keep up bis contest for delegates in spite of the oft- pronounced opinion that he cannot get the nomination. It would be something of a vic- tory for him to exercise power enough in the convention to slaughter his enemles ana com- pel the nomination of a friend. He could do this with a minority of the delegates at his back. ———— ‘The fact that the friendsot ator Blaine have succerled in obtaining for him a large Majority of the de ates already chosen to the Iltnots republican convention ts encouraging his supporters to count upon beating the Grant boom tn the state of the ex-President. The con- Yention will consist of about too delegates, more than three-fourths of which re chosen. The Grant men affect to make light of the Blaine pretensions, and say that the of the state which will boom for th dent has not been heard from yet. but the lead t plain that mit ast good fighting ground for him. It isin the middle and southern por- Uons of the state where the Grant sentiment ts Strongest. In those sections Senator Logan’s intiuence with his party ts all-powerful. Inthe northern part of the state, where the Blaine Sentiment has prevatied, the opponents of Lo gan are concentrated, and they are usually strong enough to make themsé felt. The Position Iilinols may take on the third term question 1s watched with great Interest, be- cause the fate of the Grant movement depends upon it. Should the state tn which Grant ves record its volce against him, then his friends Would, {t [s believed. feel impelled to abandon the effort tn bis behalf, and withdraw him from the race. Should the co. ation instruct for Grant by 4 small majority. even, It would have a rather depressing effect upon his candidacy <e-—____ ‘The serious flness of Senator Grover has set the newspapers to making calculations upon the effect his death would have on the political complexion of the Senate. Several of the lead- ing Journals have erroneously stated that a re- Publican would succeed Mr. Grover. The pre- Sent legislature of Oregon ts democratic and is the governor. A new legislature, however, Will be chosen at the regular election in June. Should Senator Grover die or resign before the meeting ¢ w legislature, next fall, bis Suceesscr would be appointed by the governor, and, Of course, it would fil the pla This appotntu ud only hold, though, —-e—_____ of the Boston #: riting city, gives the subst ofa with Mr. Tilden, in which “yon would b: mates nontal letu ervi the latter sal the number come to posing m the reports ot It wouea in this ned to avail them. afecs upon Since the test Mr. Hendricks has not been at any pains to conceal his luke for Tilden, but of late the talk about re bominating the old ticket has in- duced him to put his aversion of bis former eblef int sinest language, In a recent in- ated that, though he from prominent de- after the election in 1576 asking bis advice.
