Hels backed by sueh party leaders as Seymour, Church and Dorsheimer, and though Senator Kernan has not openly engaged In the anti-Ti'aen crusade, be is generally accounted to be in sympathy with it. The only prospect for democratic har- mony, now, in New York, is in the very improb- able event of Tilden belng defeated In the regu- lar state convention. Th{3 would put the party machinery in the hands of his opponents, who would readily recetve Tammany into full fellow- shij Even this might not bring about har- ‘mony, for the Tilden men might recent the ad- mission of Tammany. The contest between the two factions ts being waged witha geod deal of bitterness on the side of the anti-Tilden- ites and a great deal of shrewdness on the part of the Tildenites. The Schoharie R’pudlican, a democratic paper which supported Robinson last fail, openly charges that Tilden sent $300 into Schoharie county to purchase and pack primaries, and that {i was soused. This fs but a@ sample of the species of warfare being waged between the opposing democratic factions and it shows plainly that there ts but little prospect of harmony. ——~--—___ "The increasing arrivals at the different ports of the United States leads to the belief that the azmigration this year will be larger than ever before. Since the iirst of January last the number Of arrivals at Baltimore has been 2,300, Sgainst 2s9 for the same period last year, ard advices from abroad give notice that thousands more Will follow those who have already landed; during the summer months. The bulk of the immigrants come from Germany, and many of them—a large majority—bring money enough to enable them to begin life in this new country upon an independent footing. As a rule the new arrivals do not tarry in the east, but they move on to the great west, for the purpose of engaging in agricultural pursuits. The Bis- marck policy is.driving thousands from Ger- many, and they seek the liberty they are denied at home under the Stars and Stripes. The crop failures and general business depression in Engiand and Ireland are impelling many of the ‘sturdy yeomanry to abandon their homes and come to the United states. Very many of the recent arrivals have been of the English farm- ing class, and they come provided with means sufficient to buy — Stock farms. There'll be a row presently among the west- erm politicians. The Cincinnat! Commercial is £0 much exasperated by the way “the Grant gang” and “the democratic bullies” co-operated in Leutsville that tt says that the instinct of every democrat tells him that Grant’s nomina- tlon at Chicago would mean a democratic vic. oy and they are engaged tn helping the boom. Risipg tn wrath the Commercial adds:—“The Sherman and Blaine men should join hands in Kentucky in strangling the impudent third- term treason that is on exhibition. There mus be strange deficiencies or remarkable develop- Ments in the composition of a man who Is for a ‘third term and fs not an ass.” ‘The republicans generally are extracting com forting assurances from the recent vote in Indiana upon the constitutional amendments. Many of them go so far as to put the state down as safely republican tn the presidential election, but they exaggerate the importance of the recent election very much in order to reach this con- clusion. The vote upon the constitutioaal amendments really affords no index to the dem- cratic strength, and therefore 1s of very little value in determining the future political status of the state. The democrats were divided to the late election. and it is not poss‘ble to tell what proportion of them voted with the repub- Heans. In the elections last fall the party was united and displayed excellent discipline. It will, no doubt, be stronger @ext fall, when a President is at stake, and the republicans can- not feel any too secure of capturing the state, ‘The estimate of the London Times is that in ENTIRE PREMISES, No. 700 Market Space, On MONDAY, Avatt. 12va, and throughout the week, we shall offer attractive : BARGAINS Ta both of our STORES. 705 and 709 Market Space.
