THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON. TUESDAY.................. April 6, 1880. CROSBY 8. NOYES.... Editor. E®SMERISM, Classes for instraction in Meamerizing now being formed. Inquire at MEARA'S, it th and F NOT TOO CHEAP, but just cheap enough. AN Howson's Spiendid Tce Cream, 10 cts. a plate, $5 a quart, 31.25 agailon. Telephone for sample quart. 1104 12th st. aps-20 fhe Evening Star has a regular, perma- ment, bona fide daily circulation more than double that of any other daily paper published in Washington, and equal to that of all the other daily papers here added to- gether. ———————————————— ‘THE STAR is connected with the wires of the Na- ffonal Telephone Exchange and with the Western Union Telephone Exchange. Both these axencies ean therefore be availed of in sending to Tax STAR Sdvertisementa, orders for the paper to be served, ews, or any information, at-any hour of the day free of charge. These facilities are a xreat conve- nience, and will be appreciated by the customers of ‘Tur Bran. us - “AS was expected by a great maay, the fuss raised about Mr. Springer’s action In the Don- nelly contest was nothing more than a tempest ima teapot. The only basis the indetinite alle- gations against Springer had was in the re- Ported responsibility of Mr. Manning for them. This gentleman, by his dental in the House yes- terday, destroyed this foundation and thereby Overthrew the entire fabric of the political Scandal that had been erected. The only par- es who come out of the affair smirched are the immediate friends of Donnelly, wiose Fesponsibility for the anonymous letter Mr. Springer satisfactorily demonstrated. The let- ter of Finle avoring to influence Mr. Springer to do violence to his conse! and bis judgment in voting to seat Donnelly will doubtless become indissolubly linked with the political history of Mr. Tilden. By “our friends in New York” Finley clearly in sent Tildes nd his former intimate assoc tons with the latter will give general credit to his authority to represent the Gramercy Park Statesman. It may be that Til name or Supposed influence was used without warrant in the effort to force Donnelly into Congress; Dut whether ft was so or not, this feature of the Manning-Springer controversy will be likely to retain prominence as long as Tilden remains a candidate for the presidency The movement to mak: ands a candidate before the national repubtican con- vention is being pushed in New Engiand. In spite of the fact that the Senator himself has discouraged the movement tn his Weiualr it has grown perceptibly and may yet develop Into a formidable factor in the convention. The re- Ports that the use of Senator Edmunds’ name was simply a smart dodge of the Grant men to weaken Blaine in New Enghend, their uitimate object being to turn the Edmunds strength over tothe ex-President, do not seem to have had any effect upon the Edmunds boom one way or the other. The fact that the papers Most bitterly hostile to Grant are those whieh advocate Edmunds most warmly perhaps gave discredit to the reports. Itis well known here In Washington that Senator Edmunds has sald in conversation that he has no presidential am- bition and does not propose to be a caniidate. He has not, however, uttered anything upon the subject in any manner ealeulated to em- barrass Lim tn future. Should his state, backed as It appears Ikely to be by a very fair support from other eastern states, decide to present his name for the nomination probably he would not forbid it. Those who are urging his name appear determined to force it toa conclusion, and the indications are that the Senator will be called upon very soon to say whether or not he will run. e+ —___ Commenting upon the signiticant vote in the House yesterday on the motion to suspend the rules and pass Mr. Townshend's bill, placing on the free list printing paper and all materials used in the manufacture of paper, the New York Times notes the fact that there were only 16 republicans In the majority in favor of the bill, and but 13 democrats In the minority against it. The Times remarks that the course Of the republican leaders In Congress in identi- fying their party with the maintenance of all tariff duties, however unproductive and odious, 18 defensible neither on grounds of statesman. ship nor considerations of expediency. It adds that the question of readjusting the tari’ may enter more largely into the political issues of the fall campaign than “will be pleasant or Profitable for republican representatives who approve this kind of leadership.” The republt- cans in Congress may find it worth thetr while to pay a little attention to the advice of a re- publican paper of the standing of the Tames, The ice dealers of New York let their greed carry them so far in the matter of Increasing the price of Ice for the coming summer that they are likely to be heavy losers tnstead of gainers by the operation. A number of the large con- sumers in that city, such as brewers, hotel keepers, butchers, ice-cream makers, ete., have made arrangements for putting in thetr severa’ establishments ice-manufacturing machines, by Which a good article can be made at the rate of fifty tons per da: @ cOSt of from $1.5 to $2.00 per ton, whereas the dealers proposed to charge one cent per pound as their wholesale price. It turns out, too, on a close investigation of the facts, which was prompted entirely by the extortionate rates proposed to be charged, that beyond the difference between the cost of carry- ing ice down the Hudson and bringing it from Maine there exists no real ground for any fu- creace at all, or at least for anything more than avery slight advance. The supply in Maine 15 ample, aceesstble and cheap. In fact, tt {3 still betnz gathered even at this late day tn the northern parts of New England and New York, and on the grounds where collected prices are Very little if any higher than those of former years. It follows, therefore, that consumers living in those p! which have ays drawn their supply from that source ought to have thetr ice this year at about the same rates they have usual id heretofore. On a motion of Representative Townshend, In the House yesterday, to suspend th s and pass a bill to admit sult, printin nd ma- terials used in the manufacture of paper free of duty, the yeas were i1% to nays 50. While the Vote fella little short of the two-thirds ne Sary to a suspension of the rules it was a most Eratifying exhibit to those who are contending for the relief of printing and publishing mate- Fials (rom an oppressive tariff. It ts the judg- ment of very many that had salt been itted from the provisions of Mr. Townshend’s bill, two-thirds would have voted for tt. ral members who expressed themselves In favor of Printing materials upon the fri voted no on the bill Lecause of salt Interests held among Pconstituents, The vote shows, > proposition can be bape that a majority can and now the friends of sure are determined not to rest until it is presented tn that form. ‘The Iowa rep cans are more enthusiastic 4n the cause of Senator Blaine than are his fol- Jowers even in his own state. County after county in Iowa has sent tnsiructed B} Jook as !f there will not be even a respectable minority opposed to the Senator. SuMetent delegates have been chosen to determi Status of the state, at all events, bur the re irom that section continue to swell the Blaine list. The Iowa enthustasm for Blalue si too, to have crossed the river to some and pervades Iiinots, but it will handy b> strong enouch to dislodge the powerful Grant Sentiment in that state. Mayor Latrobe, of Baltimore, has vetoed the Yesolution of the city council to permit the erec Yon of a confederate monument tn Eutaw Place. The reasons he assigns for his veto are ‘unanswerable and must commend themselves to fair men of all parties. He says the tssuestn- ‘Volved in the war were settled by its result, but the sympathies of tho: tors in It ‘On the opposing sides and the erection of the proposed monument would Wound the sentiments of a great number of People. The highways and squares are common Property, and the rights of all classes of citizens 4n them should be respected. This resolution fhas been opposed by some of the most promi- Ment ex-confederates in Baltimore upoa the ine dele | gattons to the state convention, and it begins to | ‘ARY PLUMBING.
