3 THE EVENING STAR. DOUBLE SHEET. SATU aDaf INGTON. 1880. ——$————————————————— CROSBY 5. NOYES.... Editor. Fhe Evening Star has a reqular, yerma- ment, bona fide daily circulation more than double that of any other daily pager Oublished in Washington, and equal to that Of all the other daily papers here added to- gether. ee ‘Tae Stak is connected with the wires of the Na. ‘Sdvertisements, orders for the paper to be news, or any information, at any hour of the day free of charge. These facilities are a great conve- nience, and will be appreciated by the customers of ‘Tax Star. a The LL iberal Triumph in England. ‘There ts no Jonger any doubt of the defeat of the conservatives in the Engl'sh parliamentary elections, and the most interestimg question now ts bow much of a majority will the oppost- Uon have? The government party had counted upon making gatns in the English constitu- encies to compensate them for losses elsewhere, but even these are gotng heavily against them. Having abandoued hope of party success, thé conservaties are now predicting aisaster to their victorious opponents. They say, and with much reason, that the opposttion, consisting of liberals, home rulers and land-leaguers—some among them of very extreme opinions—will never Sueveed in forming a harmonious party, and that consequently their tenure of power Will be brief. If, however, the liberals continue to gain in the ratio they have up to the present, they will have a majority large enough to make them Independent of the home-rulers. And there 1s no reason to suppose that their ratio of gain Will not be maintained in the elections yet to be held. The returns received in London, up to last night, showed the election of 235 Iberals - including home-rulers—and 121 conservatives, a liberal gain of fifty-one. There remain to be chosen 345 members, and out of these the co.- Servatives would have to carry 226 in order to have a majority of fifteen. This, It is conceded, cannot be hoped for in the face of the steady Ude that fs flowing in favor of the opposition. Even Lord Beaconsfleld’s county town, Ayles bury, turned against him and elected two lib erals. This illustrates forcibly the popular sea- timent of opposition to the government, The government party are now straining every means to prevent the liberals from obtaining a Majority of their own party, and the latter are Jaboring with as much earnestness to accom- wesh that. The calculation of the defeated peaty ts that if the home-rulers with their some- times extreme views can hold the balance of power they will constitute an element that the ifberais will not be able to control for a great while, and that thus an early dissolution of the Parliament that ts to assemble in jlay would be brought about. i -__ The democrats in Congress have a family Quarrel on hand. It seems that In the early stages of the Lonnelly- Washburn contest Chair- man Springer, of the House committee on elec- ons, intimated that he would vote to s¢at the Contestant; that he changed his mind, ard final- ly voted against Donnelly. Mr. Manning, the democratic member of the committee who pre- pared the report in favér of Donnelly, now eharges that Mr. Springer was actuated by cor. rupt motives, and asks for an investigation. It is hardly probable, however, that the House will Order an investigation, as nothing whatever is adduced to sustain the allegation against Springer except an anonymous note. Even this note is net produced, but there ts given what Puzports to have beer its contents. Anonymous communications are not respected by anybody, And this one Is too flimsy a basis even for a tem- porary sensation. From an impartial and un- biased stand-point, it s very easy to understand how-a member could have changed his mind {rofl a tavorabie to an unfavorable view of the Donnelly case. There are not a few democratic ~the,.Holse Mr. Springer would have had — ot-democratic company in voting as he aud. ‘$e. ‘The,Ppisode Of the severance of Stone’s head from his body at the execution yesterday struck ‘Leer rnpiemantly at frst, but afier all 1s not thistmode of death better than sirangula- tomerckoking bya rope?
