FRIDAY ---- April 2, 1880. ”_ CHORBY S. NOYVES.... Editor. | ONT FAIL TO. EXAMINE THUSE BEAU. The Evening Star has a regular, perma- ment, bona fide daily circulation more than double that of any other daily paper published in Washington, and equal to that of all the other daily payers here added to- @etner. ~ ‘The Double Sheet To-morrow. The double sheet of fifty-six columns to- morrow will be an interesting number, and as usual an extra edition will be printed. Adver- tisers and newsdealers will please send in thetr Orders as early as practicable. The number of new advertisements printed tn March was 1,805. Increase over last March, £37. In- crease for January, 105, and for February, e Total increase for the three months, 366. Total number of advertisements printed this year, 4.982. While New York and other eastern cities are being put off with the promises of Edison and Sawyer, Wabash City, a little Indiana town of about three thousand inbabitants, has been Ughted with an electric light. The lamp used there {5 the one’ known as the Brush patent. Four, of three thousand candle power each, driven by a seven-horse power engine, were Placed on the flag-staff of the court house, at an elevation of nearly two hundred feet above the lowest part of the town, and the experi- ment proved very nearly if not quite a com- Plete success. The contract required that the lamps should illuminate a territory one mile in diameter from the court house, and this was accomplished admirably where the space was Open or only partially obstructed by low and Scattered bulldihgs. The light in such localities Was greater than that of the full moon in a clear sky, but where the buildings were two or three stories high and built close together, the illuminating power of the lamps se2em2d to have little or no effect. The tests were deemed Satisfactory to the authorities of the place, and arrangements will be made to have the town lighted permanently by the Brush lamps in a Week or two. It would seem, however, from the results at Wabash, that while this may be satisfactory for open ¢ ‘Sparsely built up towns, lamps at a few high points would not do well in large cites, where the streets are narrow and the buildings high and close together. But this difficulty coutd, doubtless, be overcome by having more lamps and placing them at a lower level and at street and alley crossings, where there woul be few or no deep shadows thrown. xpayers of New York city, members in good standing of the republican party, have entered a protest against the proposed new charter, that the legislature will hardly disregard. Ex- U. S. District Attorney Bliss and Prof. Tue. W. Dwight were selected to deliver arguments against the Instrument, and, before the assem- bly committee on cities, they dissected and ex- posed it. It has been understood from the first that this charter was simply a scheme of polt- ticians to fasten their hold upon New York city by means of the oficial patronage. The argu- ments of Messrs. Bliss and Dwight not only make the scheme plain to everybody. but show that there is absolutely no good in the proposed charter: that it is all evil, especially to the in- terests of taxpayers. The republican members of the legislature are reminded that while the charter might give to their party control of New York city, it would jeopardize its existence throughout the state. Now that the scheme has been thoroughly exposed it will probably be defeated. In accepting tile title of “ Duke of America,” conferred upon him by the Rex Assoctation in New Orleans, Gen. Grant made a delicate allusion to the charge of Cyeserism that is so often made against him by his opponents. He did not deny the charge. Perhaps he thought that would dignify it too much, but. in the same connection he stated that he was too “pronounced” a repub" lean to accept a title “ under ordinary circum. stances.” The General simply improved the op- portunity to hint to the people that he Is too firm a believer tm republican tnstituttons to en tertain any desire to overthrow them. This hint is also significant in that it shows that the ex-President is observing closely the movement in bis behalf for another term, and that he {s not willing to have that movement injured by im puting to him imperial designs. The inference is that with regard to the third term movement “Barkis fs willin’. ” —————_~<+e-—____. The later returns from the‘Sparilamentary elections received in London show continued liberal gains, and while some of the conzerva- tive leaders maintain that they will be abie to hold a small majority, others concede their defeat. Up to last night 165 lberals had been chosen, to 99 conservatives and I! home rulers, @ net Mberal gain of 31. fhe opposition are making a determined fight, and the elections already held-show that they are bringing out their entire voting strength. Encouraged by the Splendid prospect of success, it is not ltkely that they will abate their efforts in the constituencies yet to be contested. Tue only hope of the conservatives now 1s to make in- roads upon their opponents, but the latter have the vantage ground, and will no doubt main- tain it. There are already rumors of Beacons_ feld’s resignation. He has announced that if his party shall be left with only a bare working majority in Parliament, he will resign, and this is an intimation that the Premter ts counting upon defeat. While {t seems pretty certain that the conservatives will be defeated, tt may be that the liberal majority will be too small to enable them to form a ministry having working strength in Parliament. —————~<+e-—___ It fs now made evident that the leaders of the So-called readjuster party in Virginia do not intend to join with the democrats tn the sup- Port of a presidential ticket. A call has been issued for a state convention to assemble on the 7th of next July in Richmond. The date fixed upon fs subsequent to both the republican and democratic national conventions.and the call is signed by “\Wm. Mahone, chairman.” Manone and his co-operators: say they intead © put in the field an independent elect- oral ticket, but there are very god grounds for the belief that they really con. template adopting the republican electoral Ucket should Grant be the nominee of that party. Gen. Mahone Is too shrewd a politician to count upon ho:ting his party together upon the basis of an unknown ticket and undeclared Principles. The biodest partisans that ever followed a favored leater in this country have not gone to that length. It has always been mecessary to raise some sort of a banner and in_ scribe upon it the name of somebody. The emocratic leaders of Virginia are satistied that a secret alliance between the readjusters and republican managers has been effected, and hey are alarmed at the result it may produce. —_+-____ It is pretty well established that the great rise in the price of paper in this country ts largely due to combinations on the part of man- ‘ufacturers and speculators, and that it 1s not Warranted to anything like the full extent it thas gone by either an increase in the price of yaw material, an advance in wages, or a greatly increased demand, nor by all these causes com- Dined. It is, however, not wholly a specula- live advance, as is shown by an increase in prices in Great Britain and on the continent, in England prices some time since advanced about 10 per cent over those prevailing about a year ago, and the German manufacturers have Yecently put theirs up to the same point. Here ‘the increase has been thirty-three to nitty ‘per cent, or from twenty to forty per cent more ‘than there fs any sound and suffictent reason for, outside the greed and power of the manu- facturer’s ring. —__--_____ ‘The worn and shabby condition of the car- Siage-ways throuch some of the public parks, gnore partieularly those in the southern portion Df the city, suggests that it will be necessary {or the authorities to put some restrictions upon Zhe character of the travel over these roads. ‘What were originally intended as pleasure (Grives for light vehicles are now used as thor- sughfares for carts, express Wagons, and heavy pusiness teams generally, with the result above poted. oo ne OB GA ANTIMO & CO's, artim 410 Lith at. nw.
