THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON. WEDNESDAY.........March 31, 1980. CROSBY 8. NOYES....Editore fhe Evening Star has a regular. than published in Washington, and equat to of all the other daily papers here added to- gether. —————— ‘A new light seems to have broken upon the Ways and means committee in regard to the tariff. After having persistently voted down all propositions for modification or reduction of duties a resolution to put paper and all articles entering into the manufacture thereof was yes- terday adopted by a vote of 8to3. The recent three day's fight made in the House by Mr. ‘Townshend and his friends no doubt had the effect of opening the eyes of the committee to the existing state of public sentiment. Up to that time the committee seemed to regard {t as one of {ts rights to smother all bills not ap- Proved bya majority of its members; but the three di debate and the discusston over it in the press apparently awakened the ways and means to the fact that 1t had been in error. ‘The Tammany state committee of New York have issued their call for a state convention to assemble In Syracuse on the same date and at the same hour with the regular democratic con- vention, and John Kelly evidently means war to the knife against Tilden. In spite of the unu- Sual precautions taken by the Tilden commit- tee, the Tammany men secured an opera house and two hotels in Syracuse for the accommoda- Uon of their convention and delegates. The assembling of the two conventions side by side will be apt to produce results of great tmport- ance to the democracy. It will eliher bring about a union of the opposing elements In the party or still further widen the breach. The republican party in the Empire state is not Ina much better condition than the democrats. The antl-Grant repubitcans are or- ganizing with the view of making themselves felt at the coming national convention, and a breach {s not unlikely. As New York ts the pivotal state of the presidential election, these political family fights are watched with inter- est by the whole country; but not with any de- gree of alarm. Should both the republlean and democratic parties In New York become divided, or even disrupted, it would not prevent the elec- tion of a President who could hold the country together and administer 1ts affairs properly. ‘Therefore, outside of the politicians, the party quarrels In New York are not causing any par- Ucular distress. —+e-___ ‘The committee of scientists who made an tn- vestigation of the Edison electric light have published their report in the American Journat Of Science, but it is pronounced too technical tor the comprehension of the general reader. The conclusions of the committee, upon the whole, Seem to be favorable, though ina qualitied man- ner, as the report says, “provided the lamp can be made either cheap enough or durable enough, there ts no reasonable doubt of the success of the light, but this point will evidently require much further experiment before the light can be pronounced practicable.” The opinion is advanced that Edison will eventually over- come this difficulty. The report shows that While some progress has been made in the di- Tection of solving the electric light probiem, Mr. Edison has not yet attained success. The question of relative cheapness and permanency is yet unsolved, and that promises to be a difii- cult one. —______+--______ The returns of the San Franctsco election in- dicate a pretty bad defeat for the Kearney ticket. The citizens’ ticket, so far as counted, is so largely ahead as to leave no doubt of its tri- umph. The citizens of California interested in the prosperity of the state have cause for con- gratulation on this result. — AINS ) No &: CASH.) E STREET. No. 626 2 ws. E STREET.)
