THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON. MONPAY................3 March 15, 1880. CHOSBY 8. NOYES.... Editor. fhe Evening Star has a reguiar, perma- ment, bona fide daily circulation more than double that of any other daily paper publisi in Washington, and equal to that ofall other datly papers here added to- gether. ‘Tue Sax is connected with the wires of the Na- onal Telephone Exchahye and with the Western Union Telephone Exchange. Both these aencies an therefore be availed of in sending to Tur Stan Qdvertisements, orders for the paper to be served, ‘ews, or any information, at any hour of the day free of charge. These facilities are a creat conve- ience, and will be appreciated by the customers of Tux San. Whe Grant Managers. Senator Don Cameron 1s the commander-in- chief of the Grant movement, and therefore his utterances with regard to the plans and pur- poses of the third-termers may be regarded as “official.” In his Baltimore Sun interview he detines his position clearly in order to finally dispose of the “little anonymous paragraphs” that are continually appearing in the newspa- pers with regard to his views on the presiden- tial question. He Is in favor of Gen. Grant’s nomination for President, and has no second choice, and such an event as Grant’s being out of the race he considers impossible. He is so confident of the success of his candidate that “nothing but death can prevent the nomination of Grant now.” This declaration 1s important, because it proves that the third- term issue will have to be fought to the end, Within the party. The theory of Mr. Geo. Wm. Curtis and other leading anti-Grant repubil- cans, has been that the development of a strong opposition to the third term would cause a with- drawal of Grant. In this view they have pro- ceeded to organize the opposition and to make itas apparent as possible. Senator Cameron’s declarations indicate that he and his friends have no thought of retreat or surrender, but on the contrary, they Intend to fight for the prin- ciple they advocate until the Chicago conven- tion shall have decided the nomination. Thus admonished, the antl-Grant republicans will have to abandon their present policy of working up sentiment against the third-term, and devote their energies to the election of delegates to the national convention, if they would succeed. The Grant managers have been, from the first, laboring for practical results, and that is the basis of their confidence. They are practical politictans, and count nothing for or against their candidate unless it is capable of being turned into a vote at the nominating conven- tion. They have secured the delegations from Pennsy}vania and New York, and substantially that from Missouri. In the latter state, while the opposition were arranging for public meet- ings and advertising lectures, the Grant men were quietly but effectively canvassing and converting the state committee to their way of thinking. The result has been a split in the committee, but more than two-thirds of the ~—-members stick together on the Grant issue and will control the state delegation, There is no room to doubt the earnest- ness and singleness of purpose of the men who are managing Gen. Grant’s can- vass. Whenever they have spoken it has been to the same effect as the utterances of Senator Cameron,we have here quoted. They apparently believe their candidate to be the strongest man their party can nominate, and in putting this belief into effect by nominating him for the presidency they are not to be driven from the track by resolutions and expressions of hos- tility. From present appearances, It looks as if the fssue will not be settied until the nominat- ing vote at Chicago shall be reached. ————<-—__. Money in Pictures. The high prices which marked the first even- ing’s sale of the Harper pictures in New York last Friday, were fully maintained at the second sale on Saturday evening, when the remaining seventy-two numbers were sold. The pictures which brought $1,000 or over were the foliowin; Landscape and Cattle,” Van Marcke, 45x36, 3,725; | “Education of Azor,” Perrault, 36x45, $3,450; “Bischari War- rior,” Gerome, .12x16, $2,100; “Southdown Sheep,” Verbeckhoeven, 3: , $1,800; “Magic Mirror,” Alma-Tadema, 9x14, $1,300; “Sexton’s Daughter,” Piltz, 19x28, $1,650; “The Vidette,” de Neuville, 1 50; “Landscape,—morning effect,” Diaz. $1,5 hildhood’s Prayer,” Bou- guereau, 14x17, $! ; “Landscape with Boat,” Dupré, 13x21, “Wallachian Scene,’ Schreyer, 38x23, $1,450; “Discussion,” Stetnhetl, 15x18, $1,450; “Forest of Fontatnebleau,” Diaz. 23x18, $1,350; “Mating,” Kaemmerer, 10x16, $1,300; “Wine Merchant,” Col, 9x12, $1,250; “Flowers and Objects of Art,” Robie, 15x19, $1,250; “Coming storm,” Von Thoren, 40x2 $1,250; “Fortuny’s Studio,” Ferrandiz, 32x18, $1,100; “Cuirasster,” Detaille, 16x22, (water color) $1,100; “Tender Thoughts,” Toulmouche, 14x16, $1,050. The second evening's sale brought a total of $56,060, which with the proceeds of Friday’s sale, made a grand aggregate of $105,640 for the 144 pictures, or a little over an average of 3720 a piece, and which is no doubt @ handsome advance on their original cost. Kearney virtually hoisted a tlag of truce at the sand lots inSan Francisco yesterday and surrendered to the powers of law andorder. In his Sunday speech he took a very different tone from that which has characterized his haran- gues heretofore, and the prospect is that he will soon subside altogether, and sink into ob- security. When he drops violence and vulgarity in his role of agitator, Kearneyjabandons all that has ever given him any notoriety. The firm stand taken by the citizens’ committee advised him that it would be dangerous to proceed much farther in his old course, and he had the discretion to surrender. He, yesterday, cor- plimented the committee very highly, and de- clared they had the interests of the working- men at heart. Mayor Kalloch took his cue from Kearney, and wisely recognized the good purposes of the citizens’ movement. Thus by a display of unity and firmness have the citizens of San Francisco silenced the two men who were evidently endeavoring to incite the poor classes to violence. This is a great stride to- wards the restoration of quiet and order in the community, and the men who have begun so Well will, no doubt, be able to maintain the Peace. = ANOTHER DISCOVERY. STROUSE 4 CO, Proprietors. The experiment of supplying the desert Te- gions of the United States with water by means of artesian wells, will, no doubt, be tried before very long. The Senate has passed a bill appropriating $20,000 for boring two wells, and authorizing the Secretary of the Interlor to lo- cate them at such points as he deems best for a test of the experiment. No doubt is entertained Of the passage and approval of the bill, as it is believed by persons who have given a great deal of study to the subject that large tracts of ‘the 800, 600,000 acres of arid region in this coun- try can be reclaimed and made useful by means of artesian wells. One-half of this vast arid Tegion comprises plains and prairie which could be made to yield excellent crops, if means of ir- iigation could be provided. Should the expert- yeent prove successful, Congress will be called vpon to provide money for sinking wells upon fueh tracts as are most desirable and as would 98t readily command purchasers. ————~--___ "There are five candidates in the fleld for gov- ‘:nor of Arkansas.
