The number of advertisements printed in February was 1,495. Increase over last year 124. Increase for January, 1250 Total increase for two months, 249 Total umber of new advertisements thus far this year, 3,1173 being more for two months than all of the other Washington papers added to- gether print in six months, and read in THE Srar by three times as many people. ——_ore ____ ‘Tilden Sticks. Mr. Tilden has disposed of the rumors of his intended withdrawal from the presidential race by formally and positively declaring that he is in the field and will remain there until the nomination shall be decided. Those who best know his methods of political maneuvering say that he has never really, for a moment, enter- tained the idea of abandoning the contest for his party’s nomination; but, at allevents, he Permitted doubt to be thrown upon his inten- tions. He was, perhaps, waiting for his party to urge him to accept the nomination, but as the time for holding the convention drew nearer it became more and more apparent that Til- den’s retirement would please the masses of the democracy better than his candidacy. When he learned that the party was willing to permit him to retire to the peace- ful shades of Greystone, and t make the race with some other man at the head of its ticket, Tilden evidently concluded that it was fume for positive action. He assembled his most trusty friends—known as the Tilden syn- dicate—together in New York city last Satur- day, and they were authorized to announce to the country that Tilden would be on hand in Cincinnati asking for a renomination. Speaker Randall was present at the conference, and since his return to Washington he has informed the democratic members of Congress “officially” of Tilden’s purpose to seek a renomination. ‘This action of Tilden puts an end to all negotia- Uons fur peace and harmony between the two elements of democracy in New York. Tam- many stands boldly by the position it took last fall and announces that if Tilden ts the presi- dential nominee the 0,000 democrats who voted against Robinson will “bury him out of sight.” ‘Tilden cannot conciliate Tammany, therefore he must expect to crush it. The fight between them is renewed, but it is now upon a nation scale. ‘The same tactics that Mr. Kelly pursued in the State convention, he announces, will be adopted in the national convention. He will apply for the admission of the Tammany detezation, and feels confident they will be seated. Then he will formally announce to the convention that @ large proportion of the New York democrats will bolt the nomination of Tilden, but that they will cordially support any other man. Then, should Tilden win, can anpbody doubt that the democrats who defeated Robinson in New York will hesitate to cast their ballots against the man they hate even worse than Robinson? Prominent democrats in Congress who have been endeavoring to harmonize party affairs in New York are very much discouraged at the difficulties presented, and curses both loud and deep are being hurled at Tilden. It does not require a canvass of democratic congress- ammen to show that, with but very few exceptions they are bitterly hostile to Tilden. A leading democratic Senator said yesterday:— “If the democratic party loses this next elec- ton it will be through Tilden, He has divided the party and it never can be reunited until we get rid of him. He is a cold and selfish schemer, and if he fails to get the nomination he will se- cretly do all in his power to prevent us from carrying New York. Hels too heavy a load for us to carry, and my only fear is because of him.” This is the opinion of very many demo- eratic Congressmen, and during the present week several serious conferences have been held for the purpose of devising some Plan by which Tilden can be thwarted. One plan suggested {s that the anti Tilden democrats shall decide upon some man tosupport forthe nomination and then go to work for him in earnest. It ts conceded that the Gramercy statesman is a powerful manipu- lator of politics, and that if his opponents di- vide their strength between several candidates he will probably win the nomination. Hence the suggestion that all the anti-Tilden forces be concentrated. From now until the meeting of the Cincinnat! convention there will be as active a contest waged in democratic ranks be- tween Tilden and anti-Tilden men as is going on in the republican party between the friends and opponents of Gen. Grant. ————_~+ee-—___ Count Von Moltke believes firmly in the ad- age ‘in time of peace prepare for war.” In the debate on the army bill In the German Reich- stag he urged the enlargement of the army, say- ing that while there was no indication at pres- ent that the peace of Europe would be dis- turbed, the only way to maiptatn tranquility is for Germany to have an army so large that her demands for peace will always be respected. He called attention to the fact that while other European nations have but one exposed border, Germany and Austria could be invaded from two sides. Such arguments as these are put before the public, but the true object in view in enlarging the German army fs no doubt to keep pace with the increase in the milltary forces of France. ————~~co —___ Among other hospitalities extended to M. de Lesseps in New York, he had the opportunity the other day to attend a $200,000 fire, and see ‘the operations of the fire department. Of course he was surprised and delighted, as he was ex- pected to be, with the extent and perfection of the apparatus, the skill and energy of the men, and the supply of water. But what puzzted the great engineer most, and what he wanted to know, was, why we do not in this country build more substantially and more securely, and thus beable to dispense with such expensive munt- cipal appendages as we are obliged to support, and atthe same time practically escape all risk of extensive conflagrations. The old fellow evi- dently bas an idea that prevention is better than. cure, or something like that, running through ‘his mind. —— ‘The nihilist assassin who fired at Gen. Mell- koff, military dictator of St. Petersburg, was a better marksman than his contederates who several times fired at the Czar. He hit his mark, but he had not taken into account the bullet-proot armor which the general wore un- derneath his coat. The next man deputed by the nihilists to shoot one of the Russian rulers will probably alm at the head or face, which cannot, very conveniently, be covered by a coat of mail. The Czar finds cause for congratula- ion in the fact that the assassins are directing their attention and their bullets at somebody ise than bimself. ‘There is a good deal of blood on the face of the Journalistic moon in St. Louis, and blood red blood, at that. A street meeting occurred a few evenings ago between Col. Hyde of the Republi- can and Col. McCullagh of the Globe-Democrat, Which, however, only resulted in a draw game ot sharp words. Since then Col. Hyde and Col. Pulitzer of the Post-Dispatch met in the street, and this time the consequences were more serious. The story is, that, owing to the promi- uence of Col Pulitzer’s olfactory facilities, that gentleman got a little the worst of the meeting, ‘Dut the damage was slight. The much talked of alleged intoxication ok the St. Louts delegation sent here to secure the meeting of the demo- cratic convention in that city was the cause of ‘the trouble. —_——_— sa mother drove the and ia au ook ge het Solem wits Hop Bitters. koe .—We have this da ited Mr. a Sue Bole A rent fon tonne of ou Gic (lee ‘Gosmographie he Bite stot GVashinston, February ae 1988. maré-6t pe SHOE STORE, maré 1614 14th st.
