THE EVENING STAR. DOUBLE SHEET. WASHINGTON, ATURDAY February 14, CROSBY S. NOYES....Editor. The Evening Star has a regular, perma- ment, bona fide daily circulation more than double that of any other daily paper published in Washington, and equat to that of all the other daily papers here added to- getner. Subscriptions will be received and duly ac- counted to the New York Herald Irish Famine Fund at the office of Tuz Star. A list, with Dame of contributor, former residence tn Ire- land, present residence, and amount of subscrip- tion, is now open. ——————~r-__ During the course of his lecture on behalf of Inflation, delivered in Baltimore Thursday night, Representative De La Matyr made the sensa- Uonal statement "that “nearly all the farms $n this country are now hopelessly mortgaged,” and the inference to be drawn from his argu- ment, as reported in the papers of that city, is that an increase in the volume of the currency is needed to correct that discouraging state of affairs. This statement cannot be true, nor anywhere near the truth. But if 1t were sus- ceptible of proof, the remedy proposed would'be much more likely to aggravate than to correct the evil complained of. But, as we sald, we do not belleve the alleged evil exists to any considerable extent, such po- litical economists as Mr. De La Matyr and Mr. Hendrick B. Wright to the contrary notwith- standing. For many years past agriculture has been one of the most prosperous Industries in the country, and for the last two or three years farmers have enjoyed the unusua! combination of large crops and high prices for everything they had to sell, coupled with the advantage of being able to buy nearly everything they had to buy at rates lower than they have ever ruled within the memory of most men now living. If under these exceptionally favorable circum- stances farmers were led into executing new mortgages on their land or fatled to wipe out those already existing, !t shows that they were inoculated with the poison of speculation and extravagance, and used their profits for other purposes than the payment of their just debts, Legislation will not help such. An inflated cur- rency might enable them to shift their load to the shoulders of somebody else, if they would only stop at that point; but the almost uniform effect in such cases {s to get the unfortunates ‘Still deeper and deeper into the mire. —————~-—____ ‘The Tilden papers are accusing Mr, Hendricks @2aving fostered the Seymour boom with the ptrpose of killing off the ‘only avatlable can- @Mate’—Tildea. The Cowrier-Jowrnal calls the Seymour movement a “plece of polltical chi- canery,” and says that Hendricks ts not a possi- bility In connection with the next democratic ticket except as a “‘yoke-mate for Tilden.” Mr. Hendricks’ friends, especially in Indiana, are as bitter against Tilden as the latter’s friends are against the former, and it does not seem proba- ble that the “old ticket” can be renominated in the face Of this feeling. Hendricks, for about the twentieth time, declares that he will not ac- cept the nomination for Vice President, and where would be the use of the democrats at- tempting to fight the contest of 1876 over again, without the same ticket? This is what so en- rages the Tilden men with Hendricks. They Jnsist that the only hope of the democracy is to make their campaign upon the fraud issue, and Tilden is evidently willing to try this plan. But Mr. Hendricks says the fraud issue 1s one Of folly; that If anybody is to blame for Tilden falling to get his rights, it 1s Tilden himself, and that he (Hendricks) thinks the party and the country have fully paid any debt of obligation that it ever owed to the ex-governor of New York. The Hendricks democrats are anti-Tilden tothe back-bone, and they make no concea'- ment of the fact. ——~<.-___ ‘The anti-Grant republicans of New York are doing too much protesting and too little work to make their influence felt to any considerable extent. In Albany, for instance, they com- Plained so loudly of the manner in wh!ch Grant delegates were chosen that tie primary elec- tons were ordered to be held over aga'n; bat the anti third termers pow announce that they will not contest the issue. They will content themselves with the appointment of a commit tee to inform the convention of the “regular methods” employed in the election of Grant delegates. It would impress the country more favorably if the “Independent republicans,” as they call themselves, woald go into the fight manfully and demonstrate the truth of their Claim that a majority of the people are with them. The Grant movement {s most too stal- Wart to be k'lied 0 protests. —_—__~re___.. ‘The law making power of Italy has been brought toa dead-lock. The Chamber of Depu. tes passed a bill abolishing the “grist tax. The Senate ascertained that the abolition of the tax would create adefictency in the revenue of about $16,000000, and refused to cons'der the Dill until the Deputies provided some other Mode of taxation to supply this amount of money. The Deputies couldn’t be coerced in this way, though. They left the chamber, and now refuse to go on with public business until their bill abolishing the grist tax is passed. Tne Senate meets regularly, but the other house being without a quorum no legislation can be enacted. —_—___-<e--______ Sensational story writers and graphic news- paper reporters, will have to adopt some other terms than “royal munificence” and “princely gift,” to express their ideas of Mberal giving. Already two plain untitled American citizens have contributed larger sums to the Irish reliet fund than Queen Victoria’s donation for that purpose, and something like haifa dozen have over-sized the Prince of Wales’ subscription for the same object. How would “American gener- osity” or “republican bounty” do for a substi- tute? —=—__§_§_~.-____ Letters from Paris state that M. Perrin, man- ager of the Theatre Francais, has refused per nein and Sarah Bernhardt to give performances in London next summer. In this course M. Perrin is wise. The principal effect of the Francals company’s visit to Lon- don last sufmer, was to make fools both of themselves and the people of London. —_____+«-_____ The French ministry have refused to grant tullamnesty to the communists, and the re- fusal is coupled with a defiance to the agitators. ‘The ministry announce that they are not to be intimidated into granting clemency, and inti- mate that when the applicants apply for par- don in a becoming manner, they may get it. —_—_—_~<e- -____ By acts of Congress $69,523 pounds of cannon, Worth $111,345, have been given away for statues and monuments. The supply of old cannon is nearly exhausted, but it is suggested HOLMAN’S AGUE AND LIVER PAD. Now is the time to place ios Li condition toearey you sally yroush the spring and summer influences.
