eae THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON, MONDAY Febraury 9 =—— CROSHY S. NOYES... Editor. The Evening Star has a reqular, perma- ment, bona fide daily circulation more than doutie that of any other daily paper published in Washington, and cquat to that of all the other daily papers here added to-~ getner. ee a = TRE Stan is connected with the wires of the Na- Monal Telephone Exchange and with the Western Union Telephone Exchang¢ Both these agencies ean therefore be availed of in sending to Tue Stan @dverticements, orders for the paper to be served, ews, or any information, at any hour of the day free of charge. These facilities aro a great conve- nience, and will be appreciated by the customers of ‘Tue Star. ~ Subscriptions will be received and duty ac- counted to the New York Hvraid Irish Famine Fund at the office of Tue Star. A list, with mame of contributor, former residence in Ire- land, present residence, and amount of subscrip- Uon, is now open. ‘The Suffrage Wake. By general consent the disgraceful scenes at the recent mob primaries and “convention” have given the death blow to the project for the revival of District suffrage. The Pos! emphati- cally washes its hands of the suffrage business, and the Republican gives an editorial column to the expression of its disgust at the manner in which the cause “has been so badly smirched by some of those who seek suffrage that all hope in that direction seems now at an end, until the Present can be forgotten by this Congress or another which has not yet been disgusted shall take the matter in hand.” Says the editor of the Repuhlican, who speaks trom personal ob- servation: “From the hour titat the first note of preparation sounded in this local contest the ‘worst methods that can possibly attach to and corrupt American politics were injected into the controversy. The primaries, with few honor- able exceptions, were so many pandemontums, and when these elements were concentrated In the convention, it seemed to bring into its embrace the very furies that are pictured tn the confines of perdition. It was Hades let loose.” ‘This corroborates what THE Stak has all along maintained would be the result of bringing the denizens of Murder Bay, Hell’s Bottom and the like, to the front again, to be used as commer- Cal voting material by unscrupulous local poli- licians. Let us hope that we shall hear no more of “sturdy manhood” suffrage in the Dis- trigt of Columbia. Maryland Farmers and the Wash- ington Markets, At the recent annual convention of Mont- gomery and Howard county farmers, held at Sandy Spring, Mr. James T. Hallowell, from the committee on Washington markets, pre- Sented a report stating that he had consulted two eminent lawyers on the legality of the charges by the Washington market company for farmers selling their own produce from the wagons on B street. Without an elaborate examination of the subject they gave it as their opinion that the fee was illegal. In order to test the question, it would be necessary for some one to refuse payment, when the case would be brought before a magistrate, and be decided, doubtless, against the charge. It ‘Seems that the farmers of Maryland and Vir- ginia, near Washington have been considerably exercised for the past two years on the subject Of the Washington markets. They complain, as one of them writes to THE Stak, tat “the market companies, in connection with the hbucksters and butchers, seem determined to put every possible obstruction in the way of farmers selling produce (including meat) of their own raising in any quantity they may desire, though the law is clear on the subject.” We do not know what answer may be made to these allegations, but if the farmers have any just grievance of this sort, we trust it will be remedied without compelling them to resort to the law. It is ceriainly to the interest of the people of Washington that every encourage- ment should be given to the farmers to bring their produce here for sale. The Maine fustonists created a good dé noise and confusion fora time, but they sub- Sided suddenly and have passed entirely oat of the public mind, apparently. The last seen of them they were shaking their heads omtmously and muttering dire threats of vengeance to be executed upon those who had driven them from the exercise of a power they were not entitled to. These threats seemed to alarm the timid for and then they were forgotten. ive Ladd, who is mentioned as a e candidate of the fustonists for gover- nor of Maine, at the next election, is of the democrats and greenbackers will hold together throu the presidential campaign. He says the fuston- ists will make no sort of attempt to recover power in the state now, but they submit their whole case to the people at the Septemb: election. He believes that the “partisan decis- ions of the Maine supreme court have aroused a fear on the part of the citizens of the state that the judiciary is seeking to aggrandize itself, and may undertake to overslaugh the other branches Of the state government.” This apprehension, he says, will send many recruits to the fuston- ists ranks, and probably enable them to carry the state. Mr. Ladd is also of the opinion that Maine can be carried against Grant; but if Blaine should be the republican nominee, there will be “no chance” for the opposition. This is equivalent to an official deciaration that the fu- slonists have abandoned all {dea of appealing to Congress or any other authority to re-instate them in power. ———~-—____ The supreme court of New York recently ren- dered a decision with regard to the responsi- bility of railways for baggage checked that must interest all travelers. ae platntilt brought suit against the New York Central Railroad to recover $10,000, the value of two trunks and contents, which had been checked by the railway company to New Orleans, but Were destroyed on the way. It was proven that the trunks were carried safely over the defend- ant’s line and were lost after they had been de- livered to a connecting road. The court de- cided that the defendant had no hority to cheek ge beyond its own line, and dis- taissed the case. It is the universal custom hew to check baggage to the place of de Uon, though it may have to be 19 over a Goer. ‘ferent lines of railway, and If tats de- cision = tained by the L courts, it. will force tra lers to check baggage through at their owl sk. Realtzing ( ¢ possibility that Charles Francis Adams may sot lett at the repubdttcan national convention this year, the Springtield Repuytican is engaged in considering the fitness and chances of other gentlemen likely to be chosen by that body as tts Presidential candidate. The Jast of these brough? up for inspection ts Secre- tary Sherman, who srets a tolerably clean bill Of health, as things go In the Springtield quar- antine. It would reai!y seem that he-could pass, if necessary. Not too guod, you know, bat Just about good enough, Alleghany county paid on Saturday last the Claim of the Pennsylvania railroad for damages Sustained by the riot in Pittsburg a couple of Years ago, amounting to $1,600,000. ‘The origi- nal claim was $2,612,683.96, but ft was scaled down as above. The claimof tho B. € 0. for Gamages at the same time was $4.4 0, Dub was €duced to = 232.82. It was paid on Friday. — sae ee ‘The Richmond Whig, organ of the Virginia re. adjusters, compares Blaine with Henry Clay, Bomewhat to the advantageof the former, and ‘upon the whole seems to have an excellent opin- Jon of the Senator from Maine. This may bea straw to Indicate that the readjusters, who are At a loss for a presidential candidate, are think- ‘og Of taking up the Blaine banner. —_——--__ Eugene Durnin, who was a New York alder- man in the days of the Tweed regime, says that he has witnessed some very disgraceful scenes in the 4th and 8th wards of New York city, but one of them exceeded those which he saw on #uiday last at Tallmadge Hall, —————————-—___ ‘The Blaine men say that Don Cameron won ‘Ds victory, but killed his man, Bo SPRING LEAF TEA, ° aT 50 CENTS A POUND.
