THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON, QIANITARY PLUMBING. S 22 Yeans Pracricat, EXPETIENCE. JAS. F. BRIEN, 419 9th st. n.w., Makes aspecialty of the exemination and rey PLUMBING, with a view to ite sanitary MONDAY. February 2, 1890. | Sreapcement: Orders promicy fled. tebe lm ¥ 3 YES....Editer. EMBERS OF CONGRESS in need of s SHORT- eee = IVE HAND AMANUENSIS may secure services of awe bi 2 ™ six pm. daily, by 2 Pi NG- nent, Lone fide daily circulation more | HAND, Star ollie.” feb2-3t* than double that of any other daily paper published in Washington, and equal tothat of all the otherdaily papers here added to- gether. THE Stan is eonnceted with the wires of the Na- tonal Tele;yhone Exchange and with the Western Union Telephone Exchance. Both these agencies can therefore be availed of insending to Tae STaR advertisements, orders for the paper to be served, news, or any information, at any hour of the day free of charxe. These facilities are a great conve- nience, and will be appreciated by tho customers of Tur Sra. te s ‘Whey Want No More of The following signifleant publication, by a prominent suffragist, appears in the &’- purtican to-d «The republican party ts reorganizing In this District with a view to securing suffrage for the people, and for the promotion of republican Principles.’ {t 1s important that the white Ment should be represented tn our prim: meetings. ‘There Is no backwardness or hesit tion about the colored people. ‘There is aiso a Portion of the white people of the laboring class that are represented. But. it. ts very desirable that the white citizens of the middiing and more favored classes should make themselves felt by their presence and counsels, otherwise they will not*have their proper pee tn the conventions and important representative me ings of the party. By attending the primary and district meetings of the party and clubs you would become acquainted with the masses, and they would be more than glad to give you the recognition to which you are entitled. The time ls soon coming when the humbler classes of society will claim and secure more consideration than they have hitherto received in politics. Let us meet them in a liberal spirit, and work with them for thecommon good, rather than ignore or neglect their just demand: This seems to be both in the nature of a threat and an appeal, and fs a full admtssion of what has been asserted in THE Stax, that the clamor for suffrage does not come from the tax- paying element of any politics or race. The class who have to bear the burdens of District expenses, whether democrats or republicans, white or colored, are pretty generally of one mind in giving the cold shoulder to the suf- frage movement. They have had all the ex- perlences they want in “ primary mectings” of the sort designated, where their * presence and counsels” have about as much weight a3 they would in pandemonium. No more positive evidence of the utter disgust of the mass of the responsible order-loving eltizens with the suf- frage project could be given than the above- quoted admissions of the suffrage boom: Gen. Mahone, who absolutely controls and directs the readjusters of Virginia, has an- nounced that they will run an electoral tleket of their own next fall. The programme marked out by the readjuster manager Is a pe- culiar one. He does not intend that bis party shall commit itself to any set of national prin- ciples, nor shall it be allled with either of the national parties. Gen. Mahone proposes that the readjusters or “liberals’—a name su; gested probably with the view of catch- ing the colored vote—shall, if they can elect their electoral ticket, cast the eleven votes “as seems best for the interests of Virginia, re- gardless of In short, he will ask the people to leave the choice of a candidate en- tirely to the diseretion of the e . . Mahone has been described as a very shrewd Politician. This plan of his does not bear out that reputation. He frankly states that his Object in having the readjusters enter the Presidential contest is to preserve their party organization. He will not be likely to accom- plish that end by his plan. His idea really calls upon the people “to vote in the air,”as Mr. Evarts sald of the New York seratehers. A majority of the voters of Virginia will hardly take the trouble of going to the polls simply to invest Gen. Mahone and his in- dependent electors, with authority to choose a President for them. The result of the Mahone plan will be to narrow the Presidential contest down to the republican and democratic partles. Nodoubt, a certain proportion of the readjust- ers will vote their ticket for an unknown Presi- dent and unknown principles, but the masses of the party wiil fall in with the regular national organizatious. The state canvass and election last fall and success of the readjusters, have had the effect of creating a pretty zach in the old democratic or “conser Y. The reguiar organs of the latter have used harsh and bitter language in denounciag those who went off with the readjusters. Such treat- ment has driven a good many men from the party for good. and rather than “vote fn the air” it is quite likely numbers of these will go with the republican sonable to sup- pose, however, th: of those read- justers who have heretofore been democrats, will vote the national ticket of the latter party. The indications are, though, that the contest will be close enough to be interesting. The Grant Boom to be P The Cincinnat! Comne ailoat the rumor that Gen. iid be for- mally withdrawn from the presidential race now double-leads its opinion that the general’ friends “are resolved to put him into the field agan unqualitled candidate for the presidency, and run him for all he is worth.” ‘The action of Senator Don Cameron in having the deleza- ton from his county to the state convention in- structed for Grant, convinces the Cxamerciat shed. whieh put vial, that the boom 1s being pushed in all earnestness. The action of the republican state committee of New York in calling an early con- vention, despite the earnest protests of the Grant element, Is certainly not less sig than the instructions given by ron, The question of renomi has been a very prominent one in politics for some months, and it had taken such shape as to make the date tixed for the state Convention of considerate importance. The Grant republicans have insisted upon an early tie nt or Came- Gen. Grant y York convention, while the opponents of third term have been united in protest- ing agalnst that policy. They have demanded that the convention be call dl, not earlier than May,{n order that ample time might be given for consideration of all the questions relating to a presidential nomination. ‘This plan, they held, would enable tue party to come together in support of its strongest men. The state committee, in spite of protests and Contrary to past usage, named the »: month #s the date for the as: con rentir Of the nineteen m h of this ag of the mbers of the com: nt, seventeen declared tt selves (or Senator Conkling for President, “if he should 1 e a candidate.” Of tunis number fifteen uv tingly declared for Gen. Grant, if Senator Jonkling is not a didate. It has not been ivany days since Mr. ConSling post saved that he was not a candidate. it appears, that a 1 ce are for Gen. Grant. » has acquitted Cove Bennett and Mrs. Jennle Smith, after having convicted and sentenced them to death, thereby demonstrating that it is about the same kind of justice that Juries of other states dispense. The evidenc Which the acquittal was granted w that originally procured conviction, and there” has been no change, except in public seutiment. The defense was energetic and determined, fighting and hoping even after the prisoners despaired. The verdict of acquittal will per- haps give general satisfaction. There was a “reasonable doubt” of guilt, and pubic opinion Was not satistied with the result of the first trial.
