Averave Daily Circulation over 17.750— being a much larger bona fide, regular @nd permanent circulation than that of » @ll the other daily papers in the city added together. ‘Tue Sran is connected with the wires of the N tional Telephone Exchange and with the Western Union Telephone Exchange. Both these agencies ean therefore be availed of in sending to Tue STAR @dvertisements, orders for the paper to be served, mews, or any information, at any hour of the day free of charge. These facilities are a great conve- mience, and will be sppreciated by the customers of Tae (ate “The Suffrage (Question. ‘The proposition to revive suffrage In the Dis- trict of Columbia was very eloquentiy advo- cated by Messrs. Ingersoll, Durant and others, at the meeting last night. About all that can be urged in behalf of the proposition was said, and well said; yet what was advanced, while a forcible argumentin behalf of suffrage in the abstract, does not seem to meet the case of this District. It was urged tl it was humiliating that 175,000 people should not have the right of suffrage and representation. If this argument is worth anything it means that {t is wrong that 000 people should be deprived of the right to vote for President, members of Congress, governor, legislature, &c., as all other populations of that number in the country have the right todo. If the matter of numbers is to settle the q iestion, then the Dis- trict of Columbia, with Its 175,000 population, has the same right to vote for President, V. § Senators and Representatives, gover- nor, legislature, &c., as Nevada, with but 53,711 population; Oregon, with 101,333; Dela- ware, 125,015; and Florida, 133,248. But is it Seriously argued that Congress, which has under the Constitution exciusive jurisdiction over the District of Columbia. will or can give tous those full rights of suffrage that all clti- zens of the nation enjoy outside of this District? If Messrs. Ingersoll and Durant can by their eloquence induce Congress to give us the right to vote for national, state, and municipal officers, the same as othe: izens of the United ‘States, the boon of suffrage will be worth having. Anything short of this will be a delusion anda snare; and the 175,000 people of the District will still De deprived of the rights of other citizens of the country. The privilege of voting for 2 few minor offic: “avenger3, chimney- sweeps, tax-collectors, or a delegate in Congress without vote or influeuce—wiil not pay for the Wother, expense and turinoli of restoring the costly and exceedingly unpicasant elective ma- chinery of this Distri ‘The impression eviden: 4n political circles that the Grant boom is oa the decline. The Genera so to have car- ried the boom with him tnto the darkness and obscurity of the Florida swamps. The antl- Grant republicans are much encouraged at what they regard as collapse of the “third term movement,” bit the supporters of the ex-Presideat inttinite that everyth- ing is lovely. ‘They talk as if it were a part of the plan to have General Grant pass, comparatively, out of public no- tice for a season. It is predicted that he will return just before the meeting of the National convention, dnd thai thea he will carry every- thing witha rush. Ii has been reported from anti-Grant sources, recently, that Senator Don Cameron “had become convinced that It would not do to run Gen.Grant fora third term.” A G. 8. Senator, who, doubtless, knows Senator Cameron's sentiments and Intentions as well as any man living, sald to-day, referring to this report: “There is not a word of truth In It. Cameron is for Grant, and for nobody else. He honestly believes that Grant is the strongest man his party can nominate, and he tntends to qo all in his power to nominate him.” en ‘The Albany organ of the New York democra- ty says that the republicans may deprive them- selves of the privilege of voting for Presidential electors if they want to, but the democratic party of New York “will vote for electors of President and Vice Presid ntin any event inthe Old-fashioned way, and the declaration of the popular vote will be sent on tn the usual way.” This is an intimation that if the repablicins change the method of choosing electors the democrats will make a contest of some sort be fore Congress. obtains very largely ———_s-e—____ Pullman drawing-room and sleeping cars for oxen, sheep and pigs are what the Humane Society now wants.—N.
