THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON, RSDAY caaehoet January 22, 1880. CRY EY S. NOYES. -Editors Average Daily Circulation over 17.750— being @ much larger bona fide, and permanent circulation than that of @tt the other daily papers in the city added together. ‘Tue Sran is connected with the wires of the Na tional Telephone Exchange and with the Western Union Telephone Exchange. Both these agencies can therefore be availed of in sending to THE Stag Bdvertiserents, orders for the paper to be served, ews, or any information, at any hour of the day free of charze. These facilities are a great conve- nience, and will be appreciated by the customers of Tae Stan. Publist rs? Announcement. ‘Tue Stax printed on Saturday last the largest regular single edition ever printed in the twen- ty-eight years of its existence. This was not made up from any spurt in the news market or from special orders or through any extra effort whatever, but came from regula subscribers and the steady increase in the orders of news dealers. All but a few coples, retained for counter were sold. Ig, the Presidential contest of 1876-7 over 21,000 coptes were printed on days of exciting events, but while confined to one day they included several editions. That of Saturday last was the regular edition. Adver- tisers and news dealers will please send in thelr orders early for the fifty-six column paper of Saturday next. rs ‘The Benefits of Suffrage. While our quiet citizens and ers listen with dread to the talk about the revival of undi- luted suffrage in the District, there is no doubt that the newspapers here miss a very pictur- esque and exciting news field in the abolition of the ballot. The present routine of District Gov- ernment affairs ts undoubtedly prosaic and tame compared with the times of popular Mur- der Bay rule, when every ward meeting, nomt- nating convention, registration, and election ‘was equivalent toa round of first-class scrim- mages, in which, of course, after the Darwinian doctrine of the survival of the fittest, the result was that the Sturdiest of what the suffragists call “the sturdy manhood” invariably cieased out their adversaries and triumphantly established the grand principle of the right of the governed to Say who should govern them. The District papers that have feit the loss of this prolific news feature will see a prospect of livelier times inthe proceedings of the meet- ings of the suffragists. At the meeting in the ‘st district last night, ex-Assemblyman Gaines charged that the meeting had been packed, and that there were 126 persons in the room who did Not live in that district; also, that “whisky had been passed around.” Mr. Gaines, ever, was summarily squelched, and the meeting cffected an organization with- out any further exciting proceedings. —~ ~———-}e the glorious old 17th district, however,—Col. Perry Carson’s old stamping ground,—the scenes Were nearly up to the liveliest of the past. Charges of cheating in the count were bandied about, and there was a regular old-time pande- menium of confusion, yelling and wrangling, but in the end Col. Carson, who stands seven feet high in his stockings, came out master of the situation, and sturdy manhood once more asserted itself in the District of Columbia. Should suffrage be restored, the tax-payers may have occasion to groan, but the boys will have a good time, and the newspapers will have an immense increase of reportorial ground. The Chances for Thurman. ‘The saying **it’san fll wind that blows nobody good” is as applicable to polities as to any- thing else. While democrats generally are con- demning in unmeasured terms the proposition to change the method of choosing presidential electors in New York, there are members of the party who can regard 1t with complacency and even extract satisfaction from it. These are the fnends of Senator Thurman who desire his nomination for the presidency, despite the late democratic defeat In Ohio. Among the sup- porters of the Senator, Sergeant-at-Arms Thomp- son, of the jonal House of Representatives, ranks highest. He 1s for Thurman for President “first, last and all the time.” In the first place he does not regard the recent defeat of democ- racy in Ohio as a defeat for Thurman at all. He sald, in conversation with a Srar representa- tive: “Thurman can carry Ohio for the pres idency, against Grant, Sherman, Blaine, or any man the republicans might nominate, and Ohio must be our battle-ground. The repnblican: of New York are determined top: the bill to choose electors by Congressiona districts. It is absurd to taik about their being afraid to deprive the people of their right to choose electors. They believe they can settle the presidential election beforehand, in their favor by that act and they mean to do it. There- fore we (the democrats) may as well give up New York and turn to a state we can carry, and by carrying tt elect our President. That state 4s Ohio, and Thurman is the man whocan carry it. Then Thurman can carry the Pacific states, too, and he js the only democrat who can. The People of those states will support him upon a great principle. He carried through Congress the bill to compel the Pacific ratlroads to meet their just obligations to the government and that gives him a strength in those states no other man could command.” Besides showing that there is still a Thuaman boom in existence, howeves il it may be, the utterances of Mr. Thompson, who fs an influential man in his party, indicate that the democrats mean to con- test every inch of the presidential ground, no matter how many disadvantages they may labor under. ‘The republican leaders in Maine, apparently, Tealize now that they committed a blunder In refusing to permit legally elected opposition members to take their seats in the legislature after it had been organized. At that time a number of fusionists, who recognized the bind- ing force of the Supreme Court opinions, were willing to take their seats in the legitimately organized legislature. The number of this class was, perhaps, large enough to have caused, by their withdrawal, the final disruption of the fusion “legislature,” ‘The action of the republl- cans in giving opposition members good places, andin a few instances chairmanships, upon the legislative committe shows that they have Seen their mistake and intend to invite a re- storation of harmony in state affairs by dealing liberally with thetr opponents. Several fuston- ist’ members hay taken thetr seats in the legislature, f they say, that their duty to thelr constituents den ds that course, and within a very few days It 1s quite probable that many others will do so. The antt-Gra led by the Boston nd Springfield Re- publican, are doing their very best to break down the boom in that state. The Republican i publishing letters from “conscfentious, tnde- pendent and Influential Massachusetts republi- cans who oppose the third-term movement.” Its issue of yesterday contains letters trom ames Freeman Clarke, Profs. Seelye and Chad- bourne, ex-Goy. W. B. Washburn, E. H. C. anen, “nd Thomas Wentworth Higginson, a member of the legislature, all speaking out in the most positive terms against the nomination of Gen. Grant, and some of them fatimating quite plainly that they would refuse to support him. ‘There is a fine prospect for a lively contest for Control of the delegation to the national conven- on between the Grant and anti-Grant elements. ofthe party. ——————~--—_____ ‘The nomination of Mr. Randall L. Gibson to ‘Le U. 8. Senator from Louisiana, for the term commencing in 1883, is creditable to his party and tothe state, Mr. Gibson has been elected five times to the House of Representatives from the New Orleans district, and his course there has ‘een commended as that of a good legislator.
