pf THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON, THURSDAY... . January S, 1890. po cusese S. NOWES.... Editor. Average Daily Circulation over 17.760— teing @ much larger bona fide, regular and permanent circulation than that of att the other daily papers in the city added together. “Tar Sran is connected with the wires of the Na tional Telephone Exchange and with the Western Union Telephone Exchange. Both these agencies oan therefore be availed of in sending to Taz Sram Sdvertisements, orders for the paper to be served, ews, or any information, at any hour of the day free of charze. These facilities are a creat conve- mience, and will be appreciated by the customers of Tae Stan. ‘The Eight-Page Star of Saturday. a Advertisers and news-dealers will confer a favor by sending in their orders as early as prac- ticable for Saturday’s fifty-six-coiumn paper. ‘The orders from the latter for last Saturday’sen- larged edition reached 5,200, the largest. ever received except in times of very important and exciting news. The number of advertisements printed in THz Star during 1379 was 20,336. This number has not been exceeded by any paper published south of New Yorkeity, with possibly two exceptions, and but by few tn the entire country —_—_—_—__+o+—_____ The Reported Truce Between 'Tam- many and Anti-Tammany. The New York correspondent of the Philadel- phia Ledger telegraphs to that paper a partial confirmation of the rumor that a truce had been patched up between the Tammany and anti- ‘Tammany democracy. According to that cor- respondent, who 1s usually well-posted as to political matters, the Tammany democrats had agreed to support any man nominated by their party for President, no matter if it be Tilden himself. Another paper represents that a for- mal agreement had been entered into between the two factions which involves the retirement of John Kelly as chief sachem, the reorganiza- tion of Tammany, and the disbanding of the Ir- ving Hall democracy. This report stated that the entire democracy of New York city 1s tocome together in the Tammany organization and all old feuds and dissensions are to be buried. ATammany member of Congress, in conver- sation with a Star representative to-day, ac- knowledged that there wasa “good deal of truth” im this report. He said that Tammany and ant!-Tammany had been “fraternizing” of late, and both factions had discovered that there was really no sensible reason why they should re- main apart and fight each other; that the “democrats of New York want to elect a Presi- dent next r, and believe they could do so if they would only unite and work together tn democratic harness.” He sald mutual conces- sions had been made, but intimated that John Kelly would not retire from the head of Tam- many. In this conversation, and from another source—tie latter alsoa New York democrat— the intimations were that the alliance between the hitherto opposing factions of the democracy is hostile to Tilden; that, in short, tt was brought about by the anti-Tammanyites agreeing that they would not support Tilden for the nomina- tion. John Kelly made no other stipulation; he Was willing to overlook everything else, and to join hands with anybody who did not favor Tilden. The feeling against Tilden has been ‘steadily growing among the anti-Tammany de- mocracy for a year or more, led by the World andinfiuential democrats. The democratic can- didates who defeated Tammany at the last elec- tion and at the Congressional election last year, are opposed to Tilden, and there are a number Of signs going to show that the majority portion of the democracy in New York has consented to throw Tilden overboard in order to bring about a union of the party factions. ‘The refusal of the U. S. Supreme Court to ad- vance the legal tender case upon the docket, forces Congress to make some disposition of the question. There are not a few members who would gladly permit this question to lle undis- turbed throughout the session, because they would rather not put themselves on record upon it; but there are others who, though they may be in the minority, are determined that the question of repealing the legal tender power of the greenbacks shall be pressed upon the atten- tion of Congress. There is evidently a majority in both houses, at present, against the proposed Tepeal. The proposition has lost strength since the adjournment of Congress for the holiday recess. At that me the indications were that a majority could be obtained to agree to some future date for the repeal, but members who were then willing to agree to this have returned from their constitutents strong in the belief that the let-alone policy is the wisest. Since the holiday adjournment, too, some very influ- ential newspapers in the north and east have taken strong ground against the repeal. The “sober second thought” seems to have impress- eda good many with the fear that the business prosperity now being enjoyed might be endan- gered by any financial legislation. These are the symptoms now,and unless something should occur to upset the present status of things, it is quite probable that both houses will adopt a resolution in favor of letting the -currency alone. There are outcroppings here and there indi- cating a mild sort of boom for H. J. Jewett as a democratic candidate for President. In a geo- graphical point of view Mr. Jewett ts “equaled by few and surpassed by none.” He was born in Maryland, is a tax-paying citizen of Ohio, ac- lively engaged in business in New York, tem- porarily domictled in New Jersey, with large real estate and other interests in Kansas. Tals seattery sort of individuality ought to give him pretty good leverage ina convention. It Is by no means his only qualification, how- ever. He would in many respects makea strong candidate, and should he be elected he would Hill the office with dignity, ability and integ- rity. ——~<+e-—__.. Under the new constitution of Louisiana the legislature recently elected holds for four years, and therefore ts called upon to elect a U. S. Sen- ator to succeed Gov. Kellogg at the expiration of his term. The only candidates prominently in the field, up to the present, are Congressman Randall L. Gibson and “ Ex-governor” McEnery, who was installed as governor when the Kellogg administration was overturned by force in 1372. McEnery is backed by State Treasurer Burke, ‘who owns the New Orleans Democrat, and is one of the shrewdest political manipulators in the country. Congressman Gibson is supported by the Times and Picayune, ot New Orleans, and by the business men generally of that city. It is quietly announced that ex-Senator Eustis will be a candidate, and that he will have the sup- Port of the planting interests. Though the new Senator will be elected this winter, it will be three years before he will take his seat. — Assistant Secretary Hawley, of the Treasury department, ts “in the hands of his friends” for ‘the republican nomination for governor of Illl- nols. This is the next stage beyond being “favorably mentioned for the place,” and may result in something, if there are friends: enough. —-~-+e-—___ An inmate of the Pittsburg infirmary who was Supposed for three months to be a mute has been sent to the work house on its being dis- covered that he could speak. The idea ot pun- ishing an American citizen for not talking is simply infamous. He ought to be honored and Substantially rewarded instead. Some of the American people seem to think that such a man deserves several terms of office. : —E To-day is the anniv ersary of the battle of New Orleans, and although not one of “the days we celebrate” officially, yet its recurrence will keep green the memory of “Old Hickory” as long as the republic stands that he defended so stoutly.
