ee THE EVENING STAR. gots WEDNESDAY. January 7, 1880. "__€HosRyY S. NOYES.... Editor. average. Daily Circulation over 17.750— being a much larger bona side, regular and permanent circulation than that of all the other daily papers in the city las a direct wire from its news room to the Western Union Telegraph office in New York city, from which wires radiate to ail parts of the globe, and is therefore enabled to secure the latest Bows by its own operator from every quarter up to within a few moments of going to press. It is the only evening paper south of Philadelphia which re- ceives exclusively the Associated Press dispatches. It fs almost tmpossible to opea an English paper devoted tothe commercial and industrial interests of Great Britain without finding in its columns some sort of complaint or lamenta- tion over the fast departing rule of that country as the great manufacturing and supplying center of the world. The latest insta of the kind which has come under our observation, we find in the Printer’s Register, one of the recog- nized organs of the printing interests tn the United Kingdom, and a journal fully alive in every sense to any movement wnich may affect them either favorably or w bly. For a long time, as is well known, printing presses of American manufacture have more than held their own against all the world in many of the leading English printing offices; but few per- Sons had any idea, we suppose, that American made type and American job-printing, en: ing ang lithography, were making sérious hea1- way in England against English work in the rtments. Yetsoitis. Not only does complain that Germany and France are entering the lists as direct com; ors with English type founders for the faraishing of all Kinds of supplies for English p: but it points out the fact that A: t becoming the most dangerous in the best fields of the English hom? trade. On this point it says: “The American agency has only just been established, but already no ‘small business has been done in som? of the ex- quisite productions it represents.” It slgaifi- cantly adds: “This import trade in type ts in its earliest infancy, but who Knows to what tt may grow in course of tlme?” But the trouble does not end here. The Regisier further says: “Nor are the printer and his trai> allies alto- gether free from foreigncompetition. We know of contracts for printing engraving, and es- pecially for lithography, made by Eagiish com- mercial firms with American, French and Ger- man houses, simply because they cannot get the work done as well in their own country.” Confessions like these must be as mortifying to Englishmen as they are encouraging to Americans. But it ts not strange that they are made. They serve to show that the tatetligent people of Great Britain are beginuing to realize what has long since been appareat to those capable of taking a calm and dispassionate view of affairs, namely: that that country no longer has the power she once yielled, and that our national ingenuity and enterprise, backed up by our almost inexhaustible resources, must, at no distant day give to America the commer- lal supremacy of the world. The school boara of Chicago have abolished the studies of German and music in the public Schools, in obedience to a public demand for re- trenchment of expenditures. The same influ- ence is at work in St. Louis to abolish the study of German, and it will probably succeed before long. In that city, a year or two ago, the school board was waited upon by deputa- tions representing all the foreign ele- ments of citizenship besides German, who insisted that if the study of German was to be continued, then the French, Italian and other foreign languages, spoken by voters in the city, must be added; that a concession made to one element of foreign voters must be made to the others. This demand attracted a good deal of attention, and had the effect of creating a popular demand for the abolition of the study of German. At every election for members of the school board since the question of abolishing German has been made an issue, and those who favorit have steadily gained, until one more election will put them In the majority. ‘The principle that the English language 1s good enough for those who are being educated in the public schools as American citizens i3 a good one. Those who wish to acquire other lan- guages should do so at their own and not at the public expense. ——~-____ ‘The nominations made by the caucus of demo- craticmembers of the Maryland legisiature last night point to the election of A. P. Gorman as U. S. Senator. The senatorial election was made an issue in the choice of legislative officers, and the Gorman ticket was successful. The friends of Senator Whyte, however, are hard at work, and as many of them are demo- Crats of much influence, it 1s possible for them to defeat Gorman yet. It is possible, but not probable. Some months ago Senator Whyte voluntarily withdrew from the race, and by this act he lost the support of some strong men. Candidates for seats in the legislature—who Were subsequently elected—who really favored Mr. Whyte, pledged themselves to Mr. Gorman, itis said, when they considered the former out of the field. Mr. Gorman apparently has votes enough pledged to him to elect him, and in all Probability he will be the next Senator from Maryland. ———_—_—_--_______ ‘The contest between the two political parties for control of the census enumeration ts being fought in the party organs. The republicans are claiming that’ they have the appointing power, and that it must be used, while the demo- crats insist that the Senate must reject any and all nominations connected with the census that are not satisfactory to thedemocracy. What the People want isan honest return of population and ail other statistics for the census, without regard to what effect It may have upon political parties. It would be a shame and a positive Injury to taint the census returns with the sus Picton of partisan trickery on either side. <> —____ ‘The nomination of General Garfield for the United States Senate by the republican legisla- ture of Ohio will not be surprising to persons familiar with the drift of sentiment in tha State. As political obligations go nowad: General field undoubtedly had much the strongest claims of any of the candidates for the place, and his unanimous selection was but a recognition by his party of his services to its gause, Which have not only been able and ef- fective, but at all times cheerfully given. It only remains to be said that with General Gar- field in the Senate the high position which Onto has always held in that body will b> fully maintained. —~+-re+-___. Such bitter opposition is manifested among the merchants of New York city to the cental System of measurements, recently adopted, * that, it Is believed, the old system of bushels, barrels, etc., will have to be re-established. Merchants in the Produce Exchange, in their indignation, have torn down the posters an- nouncing receipts, shipments and sales in ‘the new system, and have sworn that they will not do business under it. An attempt was made in France to establish the metric system volun- tarily, but it failed, and the law had to be in- Voked to support it. So, in this country, it is Ot likely that a new method will be adopted unless made applicable everywhere by a law of Congress. —<re__ 5 The Philadelphia Record charges that there isa conspiracy within the democratic party to break down Senator Bayard as a presidential Candidate. The Record says that the scheme Cannot succeed, as Mr. Bayard “ has the call in Pennsylvania and nearly all over the country.” ————_-se-- Ohio comes to the front again,—this time to furnish a postmaster for the national capital. Her line, like that of Macbeth’s shadowy vis. itors, promises to “stretch out to the crack of doom.” Substantial, however, and with a relish for the flesh pots of office, as it were.
