THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON, Psvescesuen January 6, 1880. ANNY_—Greatrst Cramvorant.—Born with Second Sight: consulted on Love,. Marriage, Ab- sent Friends. Great Ind:an Charm, to bring tho separated together and cause marriage. She remain here for several weaks. Hours—9 to 7. 354 Pu.avenue, comer 436 st. n.W. Jané-6t* CROSBY S. NOYES Editor. Average Daily Circulation over 17.750— being a much larger bona fide, regular and permanent circulation than that of atl the other daily papers in the city oan therefore be availed of in sonding to Tas Gran @dvertisements, orders for the paper to be served, news, or any information, at any honr of the day free of charwe. These facilities are a creat conve- nience, and will be appreciated by the customers of ‘Tae Stan. Referring to the Boston Hevala's sugyesti that Mr. Wood change the rate of ils pronosed new funding law from 814 65 percent.,o the ground that it would be so very convenient for the computation of interest, the Philadelphia News reminds that paper that “Representative Kelley hasa patent on the 3.65 1 It Mr. Kelley sets up any such claim we are afraid he cannot make it good. The “idea” really be- longs to the late Chief Justice Case, who, when Secretary of the Treasury, adopted that principle in fixing the rate for the 7.30 loan made during the war. That rate is the double Of 3.65, and was adopted on account of the ease With which the earnings of a $109 or $1,009 bond could be calculated—viz., two cents per day on the former and twenty cents per day on the latter sum—and because that’ was about as low as government was able to borrow money at the time. Beside this, the rate of the District of Columbia funding bonds, issued b: of Congress some time ago, bear Our contemporary will see therefore that the idea is not new with nor possessed solely by Mr. Kelley. —++e -____ The Memphis 4 v, organ of the colored Baptists, and conducted by colored Men, in treating of that race says: “We make plenty, but we saye nothing: we waste a great deal of our hard earnings. A few days since. a man whom we had advised to have a pass book and put all his purchases dowa in the same. brought it to us to see if all his ac- counts were correct, and, to our surprise, he satd he had made nothing, and when we told him how much he had thrown away, he concluded to remain on the farm another y Ten dol- Jars were spent for nicknack: akes and candy, and $47.50 for wh What we need to use is econom: It fs an encouraging sign when the leaders of the colored race and those in a position to mould opinion and habits among them, give such advice. In some portions of the south, at least, the colored people receive fair treatment and fair wages, and with proper economy they can prosper. It could not be expected that they would prove good managers and good tinancters immediatety after being set They had never known what it was to have and spend money of their own, and therefore did not realize its value. But they have had nearly tit- teen years experience now, and ail evidences go to show that they are learning to save. The fact that the colored people of Georgia own ‘over $5,000,000 in property shows th Unless Mr. Edison shall very speedily demon- strate that there is more in his electric light than can be written upon paper, his prestige as an inventor and his character as a man will suffer very seriously in pubjic estimation. There is a very strong suspicion existing that the Edison electric light is being use’ for the ques- tionable purpose of * bearing” gas stocks, and this suspicion is rapidly gaining ground. The tone of the press has, during the past few days, undergone a very marked change towards Mr. Edison and his light, and, as he values his repu- tation, he ought to hurry forward the final con- clusion of his latest experiments. His delay in making the promised public exhibition of his Nght has operated unfavorably to Mr. Edison. ‘The millions who are driven to pay what they consider extortionate prices for gas are ready to welcome anything that will give them a cheaper light and to award honor to the inventor of such a light, but the all-prevailing love of fair play and square dealing in this country will condemn any “schemes” for purposes of specu- lation. ——_—__++-_____. Bishop McCloskey, of Louisvifie, has followed the example set in a number of other Roman Catholic dioceses, and has issued an edict against the attendance of Catholic children at the pub- lic schools. He orders that as soon as practica- ble parochial schools be established in all the parishes, and concludes his edict as follows: “Now it is our will and command that where there 1s a Catholic school in the parish, parents aa uardians in such places must send the'r ren or wards who are under nine wars o ae to such Catholic school, and we hereby direct that this obligation be enforced under pain Of refusal of absolution in the sacrament of pen- ance. This decree will take effect on the first day of January, 1880.” This decree has caused a social commotion in Louisville, where over 7,000 Catholic children have been regularly attending the public schools. ‘The stand taken by some of the Catholic priests upon the public school question 1s not endorsed by a large number of the American Catholics, and it is probable that Bishop McClosky will find a good deal of dissent to his order. There ts an improbable rumor afloat that Mr. Tilden and a “syndicate” of his fryends have purchased a majority of the stock of the Penn- sylvania railroad, aud that a reorganization of that company will take place. The purchase, it is said, has been conducted with great secresy, and under the new management “the Pennsy! vania railroad company will no longer be a potent factor in republican politics in the state$ of Penn ania and New Jerse} On the con- trary, the power and patronage of this great railwey corporation will be used, so it is inti- mated, in behalf of Mr. Tilden, both to help him to the nomination and to help him to election. If Mr. Tilden is engaged in half the great schemes to capture the presidency that are attributed to him, he is about ue busiest man in this country. —_—_+o-______. The almost universal judgment of the press is that the interpretations of the constitution and election laws of Maine, as laid down by the su- Ppreme court in the answers to Gov. Gareslon's questions, are correct and just, and should be obeyed. 22 —______ A canvass of forty-two prominent Ohio re- publicans assembled at Columbus on the 0; sion of the meeting of the legislature, and most of them members of one house or the other of that body, showed twenty-seven of them to be in favor of John Sherman for the Presidency: Of the remaining fifteen 8 were for Grant, 2 for ‘Washburne, 1 for Edmunds, Blaine and Hayes each, and two for either Blaine or Sherman. ‘Those who should know say that this showing represents about the average republican senti- ment of Ohio, in spite of editor Cowles’ asser- ton that she will send a solid Grant delegation to the next national convention. “What saved the north,” says General Grant, “was not generalship, 50 much as the people.” Never were truer words spoken. In fact, when one looks around now and sees the class of fel- Jows who were generals during the war, the thought arises that the ex-President might have gone farther and said that the north was saved by the people, in spite of generalship. ———_—_-o-__. Emil Welt, the present president of Switzer- land, entered upon his fourth term on the ist inst., having been first elected in 1867, and again in 1872, 1876 and 1880. He ts a plain, unpretend- ing man, of high character and much practical g00d sense. = —_— A fatal defect has been found in Edison's elec- tric lamp. It won’t light a cigar.
