BRYAN’S, oct8-2t oO Corner 15th and I streets northwest. —_ Disintegration of the “Solid South.” Almost every day brings news of sclsms in the demccratic party in the south and the organization of independent voters. Ia Georgia ‘the Independents, from all reports, are better organized than the old party and have all the elements of victory with them. In Loulstana, yesterday, at the state convention, the machine ywon the day and nominated Wiltz as the deme- cratic candidate for governor. The Ogden wing of the party, which comprises the better ele- ment, are very much dissatisfied with the re- sult, and it is more than probable that they will oppose the “ring” ticket. Io ‘Texas the democratic party has been too strong for its own good. Its majorfttes have run up to @ hundred thousand, and now the organization 1s threatened with destruction by reason of its very strength. Independent candidates are out for office allover the state, and when remon- strated with by the party organs their reply is that the party vote can be divided without any danger of defeat at the hands of republicans. ‘These divisions, however, engender bitter feel- ing between the two factions, and the breaca grows wider. In Mississippi the independents and greenbackers are united and are making a determined fight for the legislature and for local offices. All these signs show that the solidity of the south politically 1s being broken up, and la two or three years more 1t will, no doubt, have be- comé a thing of the past. Politiclans and party Jeaders will be able to hold the south tosether through the presidential contest next year. Every argument now addressed to the voters of that section fs to that end. The voters are told that if Uley stand firm in one more fight they can win, and enter into the enjoyment of rich federal patronage. Tils will, inall probability, hold them, but after next year, no matter which Way the presidential election may go, the men of the south will divide upon political ques- tions. Suould they lose the presidential race they will conclude that It ts useles to fight the battles of democracy any longer. Should they win, tue number of offices for distribution will fall far short of meeting the demand from that section, and those who are left out may be counted upon afterwards as opponents of democ- racy. —_—___++-_____ In his charge to the grand jury of the third TU. 8. judicia! district of Utah, delivered oa the ‘Ast instant, Judge Hunter called particular at- tention to the existence of polygamy in the territory, and insisted that the grand jury Should indict all parties guilty of it. He told the jurors that they knew personally parties who had a plurality of wives, and !f they fatled to indict ali such they violated the oath they hhad taken. Hedenied the claim of the Mor- mons that 1t was they who had made tue Uta Valley blossom like arose. The judse claimed tha’ allthe materlal tmprovemeat and pros- perity of the valley had been wrought by the Gentiles, who were not under the curse .of polygamy. Judge Hunter's charge indicates that he intends to bring all his judicial wea- pons to bear upon the offending Mormons. To Judge Hunter's enforcements of the law against crimes of all kinds tn Utah, there can of course be no objection; but he evidently does the Mormons Injustice in endeavoring to with- hold from them the credit for reclaiming that desert country and making it productive and prosperous. That they had done this long be- fore the arrival of the “Gentiles,” as the antl- Mormons are called, those who visited the ter- ritory in its earlier days very well know. It is suggested that the Post OMice depart- Ment tests, by fair experiment, the system of giving receipts for letters matied, with the view Of adopting it pernfhently, if it meets with popular favor. The receipts, according to the plan proposed, would be given at the Post OMice and would merely show that q letter had been mailed on that date toa certain address. For this about one cent should be charged, and those who favor the system express the belief that it would add largely to the receipts of the department, as ina great many cases person3 Would like to have evidence of the mailing of letters. This system falled in Great Britain, but it is urged that it was not givena fair Mae a It looks if Mr. “Parnell and nis associate “home rule” members of the British parlla- ment, who have been agitating the Irish upon the subject of rent had entered upon a larger undertaking than they suppo.ed. At the im- mense mectings of Irish peasants and small farmers held in Cork, Galway and Queen’s county, Suuday, the impetuous nature of that people broke out and the leaders could not sup- press it. Messrs. Parnell, Shaw, Smyth and Coleburst. the home rulers who spoke at Cork, advised passive resistance by a genera! refusal to pay excessive rents, but the excited crowd condemned somild a courze. They broke forth in shouts to the effect that the oppressive land- lords must be shot. Nothing short of that, thought the audience, would give reltef. Fenian badges were circulated among the crowds, and many persons wore them conspic- uously. Itisaneasy matter to set a revolu- tion going in Ireland, but itis hard to stop it, as the present agitators may find out. Tue English government {s, apparently, apprehen- sive of trouble. A cavalry force has been or- dered to hold itself in readiness to proceed to Ireland at any moment. The history of past outbreaks among the Irish teaches that the Sending of British troops among them is not calculated to allay the excitem ——___ ‘The putting of an Infernal machine in one of the drawers of his desk by a Philadelphia law- yer was a brutally cruel and possibly a crim- inally illegal plan to stop pllfering; but there 15 no doubt that Its effect on the meddlesome Office boy’s fingers will have a tendency for some time to come to make inquisitive and ac- quisitive people a little cautious about fooling ‘With other people's belongings. The me-hod ts reprehensible, but the moral effect can hardly fall to be good. —___~.-_____ Both parties are claiming Ohio this year with great apparent confidence, but there seems to bea general belief that the democratic pros- pects have been improving within the last two or three weeks. Under these circumstances the opinion of so intetligent and careful acal- culator as Richard Smith, of the Cincianatl Gazette, becomes of interest. S) late as last saturday that gentleman expressed the firm belief that the republicans will carry Hamilton wounty by 1,500, and the state by 29,099 majori- ty, and he would not be surprised if the latter Sigures rose to 30,000. Ie expressed no opinion as to the legisiature. It would pert perhaps be too much to to say that Fernando Wood 1s obtaining soctal attentions and dinners in France under false pretences, but it isclear that he is ralsing hopes in the bosoms of French manufacturers and merchants touching the reduction of certain duties in this country which will never be realized. In de- portment and appearance Fernandy is very imposing, but we are afraid his hospitable en- tertainers will consider him a gay deceiver by And by. ‘Wheat continues to hold its own with every prospect of further advance. Speculators and heavy grain dealers are buying largely for Speculative purposes, and every dispatch from foreign markets brings intelligence of more read wanted. Millers are refusing to sell flour ven at advanced prices. : ecu, We hear ana ‘iniquity of fast freight know any: ‘a good deal about the ht lines. But does any one Se Sree eet erpinins hoo slow Jong tn transit by steam that ahorse and awa on teem could have beaten the “express.” | Philo, North American, a tenis: Just so. Sut doesn’t our contemporar: trace the connection between cause and emtect in this matter? In the first place, the slow trains necessarily become slower, in consequence of the fast trains being accommodated with the Fight of way. In the second place, the “wheels ‘Within wheels” which control the transporta- tion factlities of railways and pocket the money that ought to go to the stockholders, so manage matters that the slow lines shall be a good deal Slower than they need be, in order that the Shipping public will become disgusted with them and patronize the fast freight lines, of which the said wheels within wheels are the Penefciaries, Hence the “miseries” spoken of, | BEssHeTs, CASHMEBES.
