‘THE EVENING STAR. DOUBLE SHEET. WABHINGTON. BATURDAY... -.October 4, 1879. CROSBY &. NOYES....Editor. Too Much of Pocahontas. ‘While expressing our great gratitude to Sig- por Brumidi for what he has done for us; white Pxtending our sincere sympathy in his recent Recldent; while watching with increasing in- Zerest the unfolding of his frescos in the Cap!- fol; and while hoping earnestly that his hand yay not lose strength till it has encircled the Botunda, we would yet take occasion to say a Brord concerning his present work—concerning pne thing he has done and one thing we fear jhe is omitting to do. And we say it in a spirit Bo friendly that he certainly cannot do us the Anjustice of thinking It unfriendly, or that we pyerlook his great services and merits. AS prominently as the Discovery of America, a5 Prominently as the Conquest of Mexico, as prominently as the Landing of the Pilgrims, nd breaking this chain of impressive scenes, jhe bas placed the problematical rescue of John Smith by Pocaliontas. Pocahontas has been done to death. The yotunda has already quite enough of her, In Dur day she lias been made the subject of bur- Jesque opera, to the delight of large audiences. jWe are not sure that she ever rescued John Bmith. But if the story were a true one, and 3c ithad not been represented in art already eyond its tmportance, and if the people of to- Gay did thoroughly respect it, 1t would still fiave little or no value for Brumidi’s present Purpose. It 1s typleal of nothing—or of very Little. It achieved greatness during a period of diterary childishness among the masses of the People. It illustrates only the kind of history @hat once sulted the public—the kind that Znade Fulton famous on account of the “first” Steamboat which was not the first; that made Penn immortal on account of a treaty which jhe never held, and that never omitted littie George and the cherry tree. If this story of Pocahontas ts true, it was an important event &n the lives of those immediately concerned. If false, it s a pretty romance, good for romantic purposes. We cannot think, however signifi- want it was to John Smith, and however im- portant his life was at one time to the Virginia wolony, that it holds so important a place in athe great drama of national development that, An view of the other objections to It, its char- acters should form a part of the august proces- sion under consideration. It is true we have not seen the designs which 4Mhe venerable artist 1s yet to patnt, and perhaps he intends to do full justice to the richest fleid which our early annals offer to the patnter— ‘the rise and fall of the gigantic empire of New France. But the comparative inattention here- tofore bestowed in this direction; the endless Iteration of Spaniard, Smith, and Pilgrim, to the exclusion of other figures worthy to stand with Ahem ; and the desirability of as much variety Bs practicable, constrain us to say what we do. ‘The dramatic events attending the growth of ibe great French dream on this continent, and the dissipation of it before the steady English lood of the coast Une, were quite as pictur- Bsque, and more important in their bearing on bur national destiny, than were the operations Of ithe Spaniards in the South after the dls- Wovery by Columbus. We hope that the only reason why the brave old artist has not tran- Eeribed several of the masterly pictures with ‘which the pages of Francis Parkman are filled 4s because he has not quite reached the precise jnistorical time for them. And had the space Biven to Pocahontas been reserved for the founding of Quebec, the departure of La Salle for the Mississippi, the suffering of the Jesuits by the northwestern lakes, we think it would Dave been much more worthily occupted. @Dnqui For a long time Central Park has justly been the pride of New York. For a long time, too, its management was regarded as above re- proach, and free from the abuses and corrup- tion which marked so plainly the administra- Zion of most, if not all, the other branches of That city’s government. For some time past, however, there have been many and unmis- takable evidences of inefticiency in that depart- Ment, and lately it has become apparent that it too ts in the hands of men who are incompe- ent or inefficient, if not actually dishonest and Corrupt. Immense sums of money have been Appropriated and spent annually for the care and improvement of the grounds, but, so far as the public can see, latterly without any good re- Bults. Last year no less than $479,000 were ex- ended on that account, yet, except the metro- politan museum of art and the park police force, Zhere is little toshow for the expenditure of That princely sum. Indeed, so careful and con- fervative & paper asthe Journatof Commerce @eclares that the money “might as well have Been thrown into the North River,” and adds:— #We are prepared to say that fn some respects Zhe parks could have fared better without any Commissioners than with them during the past few years of shameful incompetency and abuse ‘©f public trust which have made that board wpotorious.”” Altogether this is a most humiliating and dis- Couraging exhibit. It adds another to the al- eady long list of reasons for believing that the system of municipal government in this coun- try 1s inherently defective and must be radi- Wally changed. Whatever theorists may claim, it is practically demonstrated every day that the principle of unqualified suffrage applied to City affairs fs not only fallacious but subversive Of the public interests. —+20e- ified Suffrage in Municipal Affairs. Attorney General Devens writes that he 1s bliged to decline taking the stump in Massa- Chuset ts this year, solely on account of press- ing official duties, “and not from any want of interest in the election.” He furthermore en- Gorses Mr. Long, the republican candidate for overnor, as a gentleman for whom every one Bhould be willing and eager to vote. —___—_-o-—____ The Supreme Court of New York yesterday Wecided the contest over election inspectors in favor of Tammany, and this decision, it 1s pre- Bumed, will put an end tothe controversy. After ‘the arguments were heard and the papers had een examined the court unanimously concur- Fed in the opinion that Tammany was entitled to one-fourth of the election inspectors. The Court also announced that they had not decided in what form the writ should be issued, but that would be determined to-day. A manda- mous will be served upon the police board com- manding them to select the fourth inspector for ®ach poll from the Tammany list, and it is hardly probable that any attempt will be made to vade the writ or delay compliance with tt. ‘Mayor Cooper will scarcely be willing to come in contact with the Supreme Court, which was fonvened in extraordinary term at his special request. —————~--__ Not a word has been heard from Prof. Wise ‘and Mr. Burr, who ascended from St. Louis in a balloon last Sunday, and the conviction has Dow settled upon everybody that they are lost, ‘The balloon was defective and only half in- Hated. Before passing from the city limits the geronauts dropped their drag-rope—for what Feason nobody can conjecture—and this left them without the means of effecting a safe landing. This probably fatal ascension recalls ‘the loss of Professor Donaldson and Grim- ‘Wood, the reporter, who made an ascension Barnum’s circus grounds in Chi- cago, in 1575, and were never heard of until Grimwood’s body was recovered on the shores of Lake Michigan. That accident bad a most discouraging effect upon ballooning and now, should it turn out that Prof. Wise and ‘his companion are lost, it will still rurther min- imize the pumber of experiments in that Une, though it will not probably end them alto. gether. It can hardly be claimed thatthese as- wensions are of any practical value. About all that can. be learned of aerial navigation ts known, and notwithstanding the thousands of ascensions that have been made, the aeronaut Of to-day has no more control over his balloon ‘than he has over the winds. The atr-ship, after it Jeaves terra firma 1s the prey of the winds to be buffeted about and driven with the currents, in ppite of all that the genius of man can devise. ——S ‘There are 131 bew advertisements in Tags Brak to-day.
