nnn nnn THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON WEDNESDAY........ October 1, 1879. OPENING. 6 1220 wns EsDatison, 1220 On THURSDAY “octohor 2, canter ‘Opening of AY. Oc nnual Fretch Pattern BONNETS and s choice selection of MI: LINFBY GOODS. o t1-3t* CROSBY 8&8. NOYES....Editor. Average sworn Daily Circulation over 17,500—being @ much larger bona fide, regular and yermanent circulation than that of all the other daily papers in the eity added together. [PERSONS LEAVING THE CITY may have THE StaR went to their address pemet postage prepaid. for uch period of time as may desire, at the rate Of 16 cents per week, 60 ber month, $1.76 for Re money to pay for paper cannot be seni ‘The New York board of police commissioners re still worrying over the appointment of in- Spectors and clerks for the polls at the coming election. A session of the board lasted all of yesterday and last night, and still the appoint- ments were not completed. It was agreed to appoint the two republican inspectors for each poll, and one from the ant!-Tammany list. This was done, and then the fight was renewed over the appointment of Tammany inspectors, the Tepublican commissioners insisting that it Should be done, and the democrats demanding that the fourth inspector be taken from the anti-Tammany list. —____~+<--______ The “dssue” between the two bloodthirsty South Carolinians who were recently running all over that and adjoining states to find a sult- able place to fight a duel has been “adjusted honorably and fatisfactorily” by the “board of honor” which sat upon the case. —__—__—_—_~<e-_____ ‘To an Inte: r who put the question direct Mr. Charles Francis Adams declined to say ‘Whether he would accept the nomination for governor of Massachusetts by the Faneull Hall democrats. He didn’t regard it as probable, however, that they would offer the nomination, as the democrats nominated him once for gov- emor and “got enough of it.” —<_~--_____ Mr. Streeter, president of the Chicago Trade and Labor Council, the highest organization of the workingmen there, 1s of the opinion that the effort of the St. Louts Trades’ assembly to Anaugurate a general strike will not prove suc- Cessful. Said he: “ All requests for an advante of wages lately have been granted, and if that keeps up it will break the back-bone of strikes.» ‘The tide of business prosperity tha‘. set 1a some months ago has reached the laboring classes, and, in the enjoyment of plenty of work at good ‘wages, they are not disposed to listen to the ‘Schemers, who, from personal and political mo- tives, are still seeking to excite labor troubles. $< —_—_ ‘The fight between the Ogden and Wiltz fac- tions of the democratic party in Louisiana grows more bitter with each day. The strug- gle row Is to carry the primary election in New Orleans on Friday for delegates to the state convention. The Wiltz managers control the local political machinery, and the impression {s ‘they will use it unscrupulously; but the Ozden men swear they mean to have a free election and fatr count or a free fight, and they have appointed brave men and true to watch the Primary polls. Several serious street fights have occurred. The other night one of the Og- den leaders was waylaid and severely beaten, it is charged, by a mob of Wiltz’ followers, ‘The growth of the speculative movement tn Stocks and certain classes of bonds has been so extraordinary that thoughtful observers begin to lcok upon it with some uneasiness. The events of the year have all helped speculation, and now at the beginning of the ninth month the craze Is so fully developed that all sorts of stocks, those which are unknown, and those Known to be worthless, are bought withont hesitation. Specie resumption; the refunding of 5 and 6 per cent. bonds into 4 per cents.; the large cropsin this country and deficient har- Vests throughout Europe are among the favor- able events which have fostered the speculative craze. The vast demand upon this country for food supply has had a markea effect in keeping up the specu’ative “boom.” Though the specu- Jative frenzy has reason for its existence, and though there is nothing apparent at this mo- ment to warrant the opinion of its early abate- ment, it isYwell, in the belief of New York financial authorities, for purchasers who pay for what they buy, not to count upon the pres- nt flood tide holding many years. ——_—__.-_____. Nepotism, it appears, is not confined to this country. President Grevy, of France, has just renewed the appointment of his brother, M. Albert Grévy, as civil governor of Algeria. ‘The business boom ts still onward. Thirteen steamships left New York for Europe, last Sat- ‘urday, loaded to their utmost capacity with freight. The clearings of the Baltimore clear- ing house last week amounted to $14,900,000, an increase over the corresponding week of last year of $4,782,000, —-+-+_____ To the statement in a Washington dispatch that “Mr. Tilden Is satisfied he can obtain the Lomination if he wants it,” the Boston Herald adds the remark, ‘‘and we are gatisfied he wants it, if he can get it All accounts from Ohio agree that the pro mised democratic “still hunt” 1s now in full course in that state. The campaign closes in @ little less than two weeks, and in that time a great deal may be accomplished in the manner indicated. Meantime, it may be said, the re- publican managers are not idle, and they claim that the popular tide has been setting so long and so strongly away from Ewing that it can- Ot now be turned in his favor. ————— ‘The return of General Grant to this country ‘has revived the question as to where he will probably reside in future. One authority has it that he will become a permanent resident of Philadelphia, and another expresses the opin- ion that he will live in Galena hereafter. We have the very best of reasons for believing that the General will make his future permanent home in Washington. That Is, he will live here during the winters and the greater part of the year, spending the hot weather of the summer months fn the north and west. ee And now a splitin the democratic party in ‘Texas is reported, which it 1s thought may re- sultin the election of two independent Con- Bressuen. Like the democratic splits in other southern states it 1s a division upon state mat- ters, and does not extend to national polities, ‘a ACOB’S PATENT LITHOGHAM.
