THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: SATURDAY. -August 23, 1879. CKOSBY 8. NOYES....Editor. PERSONS LEAVING THE CITY msy bave THE STAB Sent to their address by mail, ‘Such period of time as may desire, a6 Tc Of 18 cents per week 60 os ee ee OTE Guee Gok ahd it aired must §7-The money to pay for the time in all cases accom: - "Otberwise paper cannot be ‘The de Lesseps Darien canal scheme seems to have completely collapsed, and it may be, we suppose, regarded as practically abandoned, unless the arrival of the talented and ener- getic little Frenchman in America should give the movement a fresh boom. Just what caused its quietus ts a little hard to tell. The fatture to get stock taken must have been, however, due to distrust of the particular project pro- posed by M. de Lesseps, rather thaa to want of confidence in a ship canal between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans as a general proposition. ‘There might have been and doubtless was an apprehension that the path chosen was not a feasible one; but there are many reasons for believing that a canal opened on a wisely selected route between the two seas, under Proper sanction and authority, and with due regard to economy, would become almost at once an entire financial success, as well as an Instrument of great service to the commercial world. ‘That such an expectation Is not an unreason- able one is abundantly shown by the history ot the Suez canal. In spite of all the drawbacks and difficulties attending the construction of that work, and notwithstanding its very great cost, It is now a profitable enterprise, and bids fair to become more so every year. From the time of its opening upto the latest period of which any statistics have been furnished there has been, with the exception of a single season only, a steady and considerable increase In both the number and tonnage of vessels passing through the canal, and tn its clear revenues as well. Its net annual receipts now represent a ‘profit of upwards of five per cent. on the capi- tal of the company, and it ts confidently claimed that the future will showa still larger profit than the figure named. This expectation does not seem to be unfounded when it {s remem- Dered that a larger number of vessels yet go around the Cape of Good Hope than pass through the canal each year, and that any in- crease from this source must represent almost a net revenue, since the expenses of maintaining the work will be little if any greater with an ‘@nbanced business than they are now. And aside from the earnings of the canal itself, the lands aequired by the company, together with those reclaimed, under its charter, are very val- uable and must in time become asource of great Wealth. Curtously enough, too, while the an- nual receipts from the canal traffic rise far above the sums estimated for the first few years of its existence, the cost of Keeping it in repair has so far fallen conaiderably below the amount which was originally estimated to be necessary for that purpose. In view of these facts, and considering also the fact that at times the shares in the Suez Canal sold down to almost nothing, it is not strange that many well informed persons believe that a water way separating the two great continents of the western hemisphere would become not only a useful but a highly profitable enterprise. On the other hand it will be strange if the requsite capital and energy do no not come forward to begin the work at an early day and carry it to completion as speed- ily as possible. It may not follow any of the routes favorably received at present, but that there will be a canal connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceansomewhere through the nar- row strip of land now dividing them may be set down as one of the certain achievements of the not very far future. Who Are They? Editor Star:—Who are the pavin: ‘who so insolently defy public coun the asphalt boiling nuisances? SUFFERER. It is understood that the boiling concern on B and 15th streets northwest, is the property of W. J. Daves & Co., the Grahamite Trintdad As- phaltum Company. That on B and 1ith streets northwest, is owned by Cranford, Hoffman & Filbert, operators in asphalt and bituminous concrete pavements. The establishment on North Capitol street is run by Messrs. Baldwin, Barber and Langdon, paving contractors. The latter comaany are removing thelr works, either in deference to public opinion or to legal pressure. The two other nuisances are ‘still in full blast. That of Daves « Co. is said to be the most offensive on account of the crude nature of the material used, but it is not quite so centrally located as the establishment of Cran- ford, Hoffman & Co., and the nauseating fumes do not sicken so many people. The latter com- pany have promised to move after the expiratian of their present contract in September; but as they made the same promise last year and broke it, the public will not feel the most entire confidence in the present assurance. Daves < Co., it is said, claim to have secured some sort of ownership of the ground tney Infest, and declare a purpose to hold the fort, whether the public like itor not. There is good legal au- thority, however, ior saying that those who are annoyed or sickened by these offensive works have a ready remedy in the courts by Swearing out a warrant or getting an injunc- ton, and in case the offending contractors do not speedily change their base voluntarliy, no doubt a little legal suasion will be applied to them to quicken thelr movements. —_~--___ Mr. Cyrus W. Field, of the New York elevated Fallroad, told a reporter lately that nothing under heaven could tempt him to have anything to do with Mr. Samuel J. Tilden, elther soclally or in business, and, though decitning to give information as to the specific nature of the grievance, finally hinted that it was because ‘Tilden had unloaded stock in the elevated road Wa vast extent while he (Field) was out of the country, and in violation of the agreement under which Tilden got the stock. Tilden now dentes that there was any agreement of the Kind. He sold the stock, as he had the right to do, because he regarded the management of the road with distrust, and because a prom- ise that a person named by him should be made adirector had not been kept. Incidentally to making his explanation he throws some light upon the elevated raflroad business in New York. He says the common sense of these elevated raliroads is in a nutshell. They cost Fr construction ten times—perhaps twenty 1 e€S—as Inuch as an ordinary locomotive ratl- x They do thelr work at rates not more than half, sometimes not more than a quarter, of tnose charged by ordinary locomotive rall- re.ds. The elevated raliroads are possible as rer ulcerative existences only in the densest city population. Perhaps they would not have prcved very profitable anywhere except for the heavy tall in fron and other costs of construc. u ‘These works were a pecullar want of the cit; «f New Yord caused by its geographical cor: .uration. They will do much to develop its» pulation and prosperity. 4s Mr. Tilden made an odd million of dollars by unloading his stock just at the time when Mr. Field was on the Atlantic on his way to Europe. the pensive public will be apt to think the latter may have more of a grievance than Mr. Tilden ts disposed to admit. contractors ion by matn- No watter what your fee! , Hop wBtiore will do aces Our forlinuce ee, Sliment is, Hop RUIT JARS AND JELLIE GLASSES, s fine var-cty, at the bottom fisures. at ane20.t 1449 F et on HEB GOD'S, Dp jor FORGOT aT.
