Menlo Park Is the Mecca of New York journ- With, the current passing directly through a Spool of chalk, moistened with caustic soda, to @ thin tongue of steel resting upon it, and thence toa metallic diaphragm, which repre- duces the voice. In this telephone it is not necessary to put the receiver to the ear In order to hear the message, since the voice of the dis- tant speaker may be heard distinctly all over a room. It is said to operate perfectly for at least fifty miles. But Edison has not permitted the work of devising an improved telephone to interfere materially with his electric light ex- periments. He has, it 1s reported, nearly per- fected the multitudinous details of his system Of Mumination. Not one, but scores of inven- tions are involved in this labor. His newly- devised machine for generating the electricity converts horse-power into electricity, with @ total loss from friction and all other causes of only five per cent. Many ex- periments, and the exercise of the highest inventive skill were necessary, before the dyna- mometer cr apparatus for measuring the horse- power, with a view to determine the cost of the light, was brought Into satisfactory shape. The same Is true of the work of devising the system of running the wires, the thermostatic regu- lator, the method of preparing the metal for imeandescence, and to prevent its fusing. Among the problems connected with the con- struction of the lamp for the electric light was that of obtaining an incandescent metal which Would meet all requirements and not be too costly. Unless the light could be obtained more cheaply than gas, it would be practically Worthless. Platinum was found to be the indis- Pensabie metal for the purposesot the inventor. But it 1s scarce and expensive. Edison then sent circular letters to postmasters and miners through the west, asking if metal platinum Occurred in the neighborhood. Hundreds of answers have been peceived, and samples im large quantities, showing the ore in its purest state. It is shown to exist im abundance in localities the least suspected, and a reduction in the price of the metal Is, itis believed, certain to follow. It seems probable that the United States will no longer need to depend upon Russia for platinum. Edison is making arrangements to obtain at comparative- ly cheap rates the metal required for his lamps. While arrangements are being perfected for its use in the household, the employment of the electric light for the purpose of illuminating large areas is increasing. The experiment of lighting one station of the London Metropolitan (underground) railway in this way was attended ‘With satisfactory results. Two electric lamps performed the work far better than the gas from twenty-four lamps. The vast slate quarries at Anguis, France, are now flluminated night and day by a Gramme machine. In mines “A Successful Speculation in Wheat.” Under the above head the Chicago Tribune of the Ist inst. says: “The wheat deal which closed yesterday ts respects Correll ne tion in grain that was ever engineered in this country. The: combination on thea tis side Ural outgrowth of the Keene purcnase cts a ne irc! - 000 bushels last fall. ed ost the control of all the wheat that was offered. It means dearer bread America supplies the world largely with bread- stuffs and the prices here regulate prices abroad to a great extent. But the alarming feature of this “successful speculation” is its Mlustration of the manner in which a few capitalists are getting control of all the great railroad franchises,"lines of freight and travel, telegraph lines and everything of public use or convenience, and are able by these agencies and their immense money resources to absolutely control the food supply of the world, and, as in this instance, to clear a million of dollars in a single “speculation” upon the Stall of life. We see now why flour has gone up lately and why the Washington bakers have been compelled to increase the Price of their loaves. It was not because of any failure in the grain crop, in fact the crop ts, perhaps, the most abundant ever known; but it is simply because a few New York capitalists Were able, by their money power, to monopolize the supply and make “a successful speculation” upon the necessities of the public. And the Unpleasant fact 1s staring us in the face that this enormous money power and control of franchises and prices ts being concentrated day Dy day in fewer hands. at the Present rate of Progress the Vanderbilts, the Astors, the Goulds, and the Keenes will, in a few years, Own everything and control everything. ‘fhe political party that ts able to put a check upon ‘this dangerous growth of these great monopo- es will deserve well of the country. e+ ‘The counsel for the corposation of New Yori: city construes recent decisions of the courts to Mean that taxes must be assessed upon the tracks of the various horse rafiroad3 tn that city as though they were real estate.
